If you left transcription, what would you do? - Coding?

Posted: May 11, 2011

I've heard a lot of people saying they are getting out of transcrption but what are they doing? Are there jobs comparable to transcription that may pay better or at least consistently.

Still an MT but currently going to school for - sm

coding. First I am getting my AA degree in Health Information Management to become an RHIT. Then, I want to go on further to get my bachelor's degree in Health Information Technology to become an RHIA. I know people will say that coding will become like transcription some day, sent overseas, blah blah blah. But, this is what I want to do and these jobs are in high demand (at least in my area - Los Angeles area). An RHIT here makes about 50k a year and an RHIA can make up to 100k.

That's what I've heard about coding - It will become like VR

is to transcription, so less money. Have heard good things about HIT program. It's hard to go back to school when you have to have an income.

It is hard to go back to school when you need an income but - sm

I am still working full-time as an MT while going to school. The university where I live offers the HIT program completely on-line, which makes it easier for me. I am also a single mom, so it can be done!

Going to court reporting - So Tired

[ In Reply To ..]
I would love to believe that we will always be able to make it in medical transcription, but it is now a situation of having to work sooo hard, actually tooo hard for very little money. The days of this business being lucrative is over. I use to enjoy being an IC when I made very good money, but now making less money and the high self-employment taxes, there really is no upside to being an IC now and the employee status jobs stink just as bad.

I am having a hard time riding it out when I see the fall out coming. JMHO

I am a bit of a hermit too, so my job prospects - are limited. I cannot concentrate

unless I have extreme quiet. The thought of having to go into an office and have mindless meetings about who is going to stock the paper towels nauseates me to no end.

Online school? - syringa

Please let me know which school offers the HIT program entirely on-line. Thanks!
I know Santa Barbara City College - offers HIT program

completely on-line. SBCC.net
Here are all the on-line schools that are accredited... - sm

Accredited refers to financial aid but you can find some really bad accredited schools - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
There are some huge problems with accredited schools. I've been reading about the Department of Education trying to close some of them and there is legislation out to try to stop the fraud and abuse related to the federal financial aid. The accreditation part is important though, if you require financial aid, but it is not a good indicator of quality of education. Apparently too many people are getting high-pressured into bad programs, just because they are eligible for financial aid and the schools want that money. They have salespeople who are paid on commission who will do anything and everything they can to sign you up.
There's not enough practical skills in most of those degree programs - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
When I searched for HIT programs, I found some of the schools that are being sued by the federal government because of their failure rates. I found others that look like they are very light introductory courses, but not enough of anything that would get you a job once you finish. I think the first thing to do is to decide exactly what you want to do once you finish. If you want to code, most of the people with HIT degrees tell me they didn't do enough of that in school to be able to do it on the job. A management job might be good, as long as you have some kind of experience to go along with the HIT degree, because otherwise the competition for management jobs is going to be fierce.

I have talked to some court reporter students about the problems they are having - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I've talked to several court reporting students who paid thousands of dollars for extra years because they can't meet the required speed. It isn't like the speed MTs talk about. It's completely different. The people I talked to have said they finally gave up when they couldn't reach that speed, but some of them have been out $10,000/year for several years before giving up.

Then I'm not so sure about the jobs being available if they had succeeded.

I am going with a court reporting firm who will train and pay me while I learn. - So Tired

[ In Reply To ..]
I will be paid an hourly rate while taking depositions and then per page for the transcribed depositions. I will go through their boot camp while learning. I also have friends who are attorneys and once I am trained, they will be using me to help with their depositions as well.

Anything has to be better than what I am dealing with in transcription. I have been in medical transcription for a very long time, been through mergers, and this industry just continues to change drastically, but not for the benefit of the MT. We have to work a lot harder and way more hours and still get less pay. I love transcription, but I do not love what I have started settling for to have a job.
That sounds like a really good deal. - sm

I think you are very fortunate to have found something that you enjoy. Good luck with your career!
That sounds like a great plan, So Tired. For balance, tho, - let us remember what happened to
[ In Reply To ..]
court reporters. They went through all of it before us--the good old days--the brief but great showering-gold days--the bust--and now the new equilibrium you're happy to join, all of it involving continual obsolescence of old skills and development of new ones.

I'm glad for you, though, that you are going for what you want now instead of just hanging on and hoping it'll come to you.
The sooner, the better - sucker punch

Life after transcription - MThead

I'm going to go back to school for dental assisting next spring. It's a one-year program at a local community college. the pay in my region is $20 to $25 an hour.

Even though I would never want to do that, it sounds like a great idea - for those who do

[ In Reply To ..]
Dental Assisting just doesn't sound like anything I would want to do, but it would probably be a very good job for people who would enjoy that kind of work. I personally have done some hands-on patient care, and I prefer not to do that if I can avoid it. I admire people who do though. Good luck with your studies!

There are 2 kinds of people: Those who think - standing all day with

Now, I figure I'll grow and sell rare violets on e-Bay. They're small, and I could grow them in a trailer park if it came to that, which it no doubt would.

Left At Home Transcription....
Jul 02, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 15 years now. After leaving MedQuist due to their bad management, I have been hopping around for several years not able to find the right match for me. Everything that sounds great at the beginning turns out to be the opposite. Either the pay is cut in half for their horrible speech recognition or it pays well and the program that they use just isn't very productive. I realized I had no choice but go back into the hospitals when my last position ...

So I Left Transcription Two Years Ago. Got Laid Off From
May 20, 2014

a hospital job after being a model employee for 5 years because of outsourcing.  Disillusioned, I decided I was done and took a job as a unit secretary at a hospital "in the city."  Pay was the same and I thought it would be a nice change, you know a little daily human interaction.  WRONG!  After dealing with nonstop ringing phones, call lights, pesky patients and family, hateful nurses, and condescending doctors on a daily basis, I was ready to run back to my home office for ...

Medical Transcription School Has Left Me A Little Unnerved
Feb 14, 2010

I recently had an experience with an MT school that has left me a little unnerved.  Therefore, I have a couple of questions for those who are currently attending school or have completed an MT program.  Were you provided statistics about the number of actual graduates?  Schools can have a lot of enrollees but it’s my opinion that the number of actual graduates matters. Were you provided any information about the qualifications of your instructors?  My next question is for the experienced M ...

Are There Any Left?
Jun 04, 2014

Are there any companies left that either transfer files by FTP or similar and leave you alone to do your work as long as it is in TAT?  I work at home due to my anxiety.  Have a position with a company that is trying to start some kind of group thing where you have someone hovering over you while you work or you are supposed to be the hoverer for someone else, which might be okay for some people who like working with others.  I have never been able to work well with people.   ...

How Many Of You Really Left The Field

I'm just curious is all.  I've been reading for months a lot of posts of people who are unhappy, their going to leave, telll their bosses off, they deserve more, etc, etc.  It's literally been going on months.  I have a job I like, it pays lower than all the people here say they get paid, but I like it.  There are times we run out of work, but I make due (and I'm a one income family, so is distressing sometimes), but  I like my doctors and my supervis ...

My former manager from WMX took me back but said I had to work third shift -- maybe not permanently -- no promises. I worked my *#% off for 6 months, almost to the day. It wrecked my sleep patterns, my personal life, everything... but I needed the money and benefits, so I did it. Finally, my account went through the ISR conversi ...

How Are The QA Audits Going At TT? Who's Left?
