it is still amazing to me that these morons who can't speak English clearly and properly now, managed to get through medical school.

How in the world do they ever get through the oral exam part at the end and manage to graduate???

Yes, it's a bad night, this is a simple vent of frustration.

I have heard doctors (NOT ESLs) say things like, "The patient had underwent cardiac catheterization" and "There was degenerative changes." The list is extensive.

Poor grammar is not necessarily related to intelligence. If you are raised hearing and using poor English, you are likely to continue using it, because that is your language.

Are you extremely good with math and science? Do you have a bachelor's degree from a major university? Do you have a doctoral degree in science or medicine? No? Well, did you take four years of science and math through calculus in high school and get straight A's in university linear equations, physics, organic chemistry, molecular biology, or possibly engineering?

Probably not. Would you dislike to be called stupid because you did not? Yes, because you are clearly not stupid. You are just better at something else ... language.

People are not all equally good at the same things.

I always think that their English is a heck of a lot better than my whatever-their-language is. They are trying to do their best to get a good education in a language that is not their own native language. Do you have any idea how hard that is? Then throw in the entirely different "language" that Medicine is. I feel sorry for them and have developed a lot of patience with them. I only wish I could clean up their letters for them so they don't sound bad, but alas, verbatim won't allow it :(

Oral exams are conducted with people posing as patients with various clinical situations a doctor would encounter in a hospital or clinic setting. The candidate then is judged on their ability to gather data and apply that data in decision making regarding the patient's situation.

How in heaven's name can these people get through an oral exam if they can't speak English clearly and correctly enough to be understood???

Many of the ESL dictators are easier to understand than the others. That's when it gets ridiculous. What also sucks is that the docs can get away with not pronouncing medications, etc. correctly (and often not even in the ballpark), and we end up responsible for stuff we haven't been properly trained for (or paid decent for)!

I know where I live, there is a very real shortage of MD's, especially primary care, and that's where I find the majority of ESLs. Everything is being outsourced...not just us. So depressing. :(

how many of them didn't go to medical school here? I guess that would negate the "being able to speak our language" part at least for getting through school. I see a lot of doctors whose diplomas are from overseas.

They go to school in their own country, but do residencies here.

Medical school slots in the U.S. are for Americans. Very few foreigners, if any, are accepted in U.S. medical schools.

It astonishes me that MTs do not know that.

Then you must also be astonished by the fact that zillions of U.S. doctors graduate from obscure third-world medical schools because they failed exams and couldn't get in to any decent American schools. People, from where did your PCP graduate? Or your specialist, God forbid? Check it out, you may be very surprised.

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. I really seriously cannot stand when the work volumes are low, having to bounce around from account to account, in and out of our own BOB. It is hard enough trying to juggle the multiple number of accounts and all of their demands in the profiles, but having to go into another BOB is just plain ridiculous.
