How many lph could one achieve performing "echo transcription"? - Noam

Posted: Nov 22, 2011

hello,
i am grateful to have obtained an IC position with a reputable MTSO which wants me to do "echo transcription" for them (part or all of the time).  i would be using Dragon most likely.  a long time ago on mtdaily.com i read about an MT achieving 250 lph doing echo transcription, but i thought i read here on mtstars.com (or elsewhere) that it's possible to achieve 400 lph--or more--once you "get in the groove"?
could we start a conversation about this?  any and all input would be appreciated.  seems to me like echo transcription could be relatively lucrative!
THANKS

... what the heck is "echo transcription"?

I did a quick google search - and I think the op

[ In Reply To ..]
is talking about where he/she will redictate the dictation and use a VR program trained to his/her voice and then edit it rather than simply transcribe it from the original dictation.

Personally, I think this would take far more time than simply transcribing it.

If you are talking about echocardiograms, then I would - SM

imagine you could produce a lot of lines with normals. The description of the echo is almost always identical and the only varying information would be any abnormalities seen and differing artery pressures and EF, etc.

You could create normals and a macro to jump to certain fields of the report to fill in values. Yeah, you definitely could produce a lot.

This is NOT about echoes. - Reader

The OP is referring to a specific modality of transcribing method, not a specific type of report.

If it were lucrative, don't you think everyone would be doing it? - dm

Everyone I know who does it does it because they have a problem keyboarding. They all agree that once you get good at it, you can just about equal the lines you can do with a keyboard--unless you were a top producer with a keyboard, in which case, you will lose some income, but you will still have a job.

We just to just call this "redictating" and it hasn't worked well - However

[ In Reply To ..]
Redictation has never worked especially well for most people; however, any job in a poor economy is worth considering. Redictation has more potential for errors as it goes through the various phases: dictation, redictation, transcribing/editing.

Try it and see how it goes. Do your best to prove that it can work well, but don't stop watching out for something better, just in case.

I've tried the dragon and when it would work properly, it was great - but, sm

I never could get it trained to work the same every time I dictated. I spent a lot of time making sure the incorrect words were not in my reports. It made me very nervous being afraid something would go out that wasn't supposed to be there. I finally gave up on it when I got up one morning and acted like it had never heard my voice before and had a very hard time typing what I was saying. Good luck though. I think the best I did was 200 or so lines in an hour on the dragon. I average 300-350 typing, 400 if I have some great dictators who say the same stuff all the time that I have in my shortcut keys.

What Percentage Of Dictators Can Achieve 99% Accuracy Using VR?
Nov 24, 2013

On the account I work I'd say only about one dictator in 20 can achieve 99% accuracy with VR without editing.   This doesn't surprise me in the least. We could have told the developers this 20 years ago, but money talks.  For the doctors forced to use VR, will the errors be acceptable to them?  To the big wigs at the hospitals?   ...

Echo Dictation
Jul 23, 2011

For those who work with echo dictation -  from what I understand, it's useful for straight transcribing, but does it work in VR? I'm thinking of investing in it, but can't understand how it would be useful in a VR program, which is where everything will be in just a few years.  I would think it wouldn't work in a non-Word program since you can't cut and paste, and even if it did, you'd be editing twice.  Thanks for any info! ...

"echotexture" Vs "echo Texture" - Sm
Sep 14, 2012

This is mostly asked out of curiosity, as I've been doing Cardiology & Radiology for 20+ years and this is new to me.  Have always written this as two words but have found it in Stedman's Rad book as one.  Also, apparently other reputable sites (NIH) have published articles with it as one word.
