Does anybody use Dragon Naturally Speaking to echo dictate (redictate)? - Pumpkins

Posted: Nov 08, 2010

I've tried to use the search function, but either it's not working properly or I'm not doing something right (I suspect it's not working right now).

I work for a company with a Web-based transcription platform (straight typing).  What I want to try to do to improve my productivity is to buy Dragon Naturally Speaking, load it onto my computer, echo dictate (redictate) what my docs are saying, and then cut and paste the software's output into the platform window.  Has anybody here ever tried this?  If so, how successful were you in terms of improving your productivity?  Did you find redictating what the docs were saying to be a major challenge? I"m more so trying to increase my income by doing this rather than trying to save my hands/wrists.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

I looked into this a while back and found that one would never be able to train the everyday version to transcribe medical dictation and a single user license for the medical version is around $1600.00.

If you try it though, do let us know how it works out! It "might" be worth it.

The advantages with the medical version are two-fold: [1] It's filled with tons of medical words, and [2] You have the ability to create macros and templates. BUT, you don't have to buy the medical version to use DNS with MT. You just have to give up the macro/template capability (use AutoText and AutoCorrect instead)and you have to be willing to put a lot of time into training it.

What I tell everyone is this ... If you're already kicking out 300-400 lph with ease and you don't have any physical problems (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome), then continue typing 'cause DNS won't improve things for you all that much.

But, if your production is not that high, you have medical issues, and you're working for a doctor's office (one specialty), then it's worth the time and effort to train. It's not hard to echo dictate and proof 450+ lph under those circumstances.

Thanks, SnowBunny. This is helpful. -nm - Pumpkins

You said exactly the same thing I did with the exception of saying it would be possible, but would take a long time for a single specialty. Who would need that kind of production (not worrying about the wrists) under the circumstances you mention?

Who knows. I would love to hear from someone who was able to teach regular DNS medical terminology well enough to produce accurate acute care/multispecialty documents and get a good paycheck while they're at it.

I use Dragon Medical 9.5. Am getting ready to upgrade to 10.1. It is 99% accurate out of the box as they say. The trick is getting a good microphone in order to cut down on the misrecognitions that still plague VR. I can pretty much redictate right along with what I am hearing now, but it takes a while to develop that ability.

The thing about it is you have to master proofing in a different way from what you're used to with typing. I have gotten it to the point where it makes very few errors now, but the nature of the beast is such that most of the errors VR does make tend to amount to critical errors, so you have to be very careful.

I am now working with a company that does not work with VR at all. It's all strictly typing. It's great. I'm actually making money again, and using VR in this setting has made it fun again. I was previously dealing with significant burn out. Now I look forward to working again.

I got my copy of Dragon Medical for $300 brand new, unopened. There were a few companies on ebay that had some copies left over that they were offing for deep discounts because the newer version had come out and nobody wanted the older ones any more. I got lucky. However, version 11 is due out in March, so deals on 10.1 will no doubt become available. Otherwise, I agree it is way over priced. The cheapest you're going to find version 10.1 right now is about $1600, and version 11 is going to be probably around $2000. There are some major pluses to doing this, though. Overall, I love it.

Thanks, repeater. -nm - Pumpkins

Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5
Dec 16, 2011

I have the Standard version 10 and had to deal with a lot of bug issues with it.  I love the program, but I didn't like the constant problems with trying to download updates, etc.  (I have Vista).    I wondered if anyone else out there bought this updated version and was pleased with it.  I'm hoping to hear that they have the bugs worked out of this program, as the program itself is great and a valuable assest to an MT who types in Word.  Any feedback a ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking Success Stories?
Nov 12, 2009

I'd like some advice from those out there that are using this.  I have 32-bit Vista.  I have heard that version 10 is a nightmare to install with cruddy tech support from Nuance.  Therefore, I am considering going with version 9 Preferred if I can find it.  I can't afford the Medical software, but I have heard of MTs having good results with training the Preferred version to medical words.  My hands are bothering me, and I need to get this software to help out with reports.  ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking - Voice Recognition Software
Jan 18, 2010

Hi, I have been researching this voice recognition software, and have found that about a third of MTs think it is not faster than typing, another third thinks it does not work well at all, and the final third thinks it does improve productivity.  Does anyone have any input here as to a few more opinions? Thanks, Abby ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking Compatible With Scribe Platform?
Oct 02, 2014

I'm wondering if anyone knows if Dragon Naturally Speaking is compatible with Transportal's platform, I believe it's Scribe?  This is the home version, which worked quite well in the past.  I know there are a few that won't allow third party software and the program will be blocked.  I understand why as regard to HIPAA, etc.  I'm just trying to keep working as long as I can with RA. If anyone is using Dragon in conjunction with MTSO platform, I' ...

Echo Dictation
Jul 23, 2011

For those who work with echo dictation -  from what I understand, it's useful for straight transcribing, but does it work in VR? I'm thinking of investing in it, but can't understand how it would be useful in a VR program, which is where everything will be in just a few years.  I would think it wouldn't work in a non-Word program since you can't cut and paste, and even if it did, you'd be editing twice.  Thanks for any info! ...
