Health insurance for self-employed medical transcriptionist - Happy MT

Posted: Feb 18, 2011

My husband is 6 years old than I am and retiring and starting Medicare in couple months.  I have always been on his insurance.  Anyone have any good leads to health insurance for us self-employed types.  Thanks.

I'm happy with Mutual of Omaha supplemental insurance. The plan I have is the same as the one offered by AARP but is $20 per month less. It costs me $147 a month.

Sometimes it depends on the state you live in. - Hayseed

What may be available to one person, may not be available to another. That's the trouble we have here in Maine, a *&#@'in "guaranteed issue" state.

Only 2 insurance companies choose to do business here because of that fact, and they are both ridiculously expensive because they can be--no competition. So, you may want to check with your state via government website and see if they have a list of companies that are allowed to do business there.

Good luck in your search!

I hope you do not have any (and I do mean ANY) pre-existing conditions. Our state has a high-risk insurance pool for people with things like diabetes, asthma, etc. but the premium for one person is $1600 PER MONTH with a 5K deductible.

No preexisting. I need to lose 20 lb. I was quoted $1045 a month by Blue Cross/Blue Shield (SC) for 59-year-old female. No mention of preexisting. I thought Obama said they can't do that??!?!?! UNREAL. I am seriously tempting to get really healthy (lose some weight and exercise) and not have any insurance. Even our coverage now is a joke, $5000 deductible PLUS the $274/month premium payments, then only 80%. My sister told me today her neighbor was in the hospital, had no insurance. Because he was paying cash, they took off 40% of his bill. So tell me this isn't all one huge scam by health care and insurance companies....or so it would appear.

Insurance ripoffs - Learned a lesson

Here is one of the reasons why they are willing to take a 40% cut in payment.

I was in the hospital last October.  They asked me if I wanted a flu shot as long as I was there.  I figured, why not, saves me a trip later.

When I got the itemized statement of my 3 day stay (over $16,000), they had charged me $85.00 for a flu shot (which I could have gotten at Walgreens for $30), but the real kicker was that they charged me TWICE.  They wanted me to pay $170 for one flu shot.  Even with a 40% discount (and only being charged for the 1 shot I actually got), the hospital was making out like bandits.

Yeh, healthcare is a ripoff.

If you are basically healthy and (the Good Lord willing) you do not need open heart or brain surgery, if you can swing putting $1000 away in an interest bearing account, you would probably come out ahead in the end.

I had always been an employee and had paid premiums for 30 years without ever having to be admitted to a hospital.  If I had put all that money into an interest bearing account, I would be set now.

Too bad they have brainwashed us into thinking we cannot live without insurance.  The truth is, we could probably live better without it.

And it is impossible to predict who or when. My DD has a metabolic disorder, and her medication alone costs $750 a month. She spent 21 days in the hospital in 2010. But you can be healthy and have one hospitalization wipe you out if you don't have insurance and don't qualify after the fact for assistance. It would scare me, and my personal health costs aren't that high.

Try looking there. All states actually have a High Risk Pool (like mention) but they also have a pool for people who have pre-existing conditions (caveat you have to be uninsured 6 months first). This is the info on that plan in Texas

I did not know about these plans before I went to that healthcare.gov site.

had pre-existing condition and was denied coverage, but was able to get it through my state's healthcare reform program.

I was wondering for all of you MTs who work full-time from home, what health insurance does your company provide you and your family with and how much do you pay out of pocket? I work for a company (will not mention the name) and pay $62 per pay period (for just me) which I didn't think was so bad - BUT i just found out I have a $3500 calender year deducible and will have to pay 35% of hospital fees if admitted (which I will be in 2010). So besides paying the $62 monthly, I will be paying $ ...

Self-employed Health Insurance Deduction
Mar 02, 2014

My husband's employer offers health insurance benefits to spouses but doesn't pay any part of it.  I  was wondering if any of you ICs in the same situation still claim the self-employment health insurance deduction?  There doesn't seem to be a set definition of subsidized for this purpose.  Some claim that the spouse still gets a negotiated reduced rate to pay and the premiums are pre-tax, so it is subsidized.  Unfortunately, it would still cost over ...

New Medical Transcriptionist

I am trying to find a good training program.  I have looked into career step and then a local training program at a technical program here in Denver.  The Denver program has an internship as part of the course but is not ahdi approved.  It is a 17 month program and looks thorough but I don't know how big the ahdi approval is.  I've heard that career step helps graduates get a job.  Any advice for me on this?  Thanks. ...

Health Insurance As An IC
Oct 21, 2010

I am considering becoming self employed (after a fashion) as an IC.  I have gone onto www.healthcare.gov and gone through the steps they advise when you want to take out private insurance.  Holy cow, the insurance plans offered varied in premium cost from $600 to $4000 per month for a family of 4, but the thing that got me was two items:  Maximum out of pocket for individual: 0$.  Annual deductible for individual: 0$.  Woohoo.  This just seems too good to be true.&n ...

HELP! Need Health Insurance
Jun 26, 2015

I've always had my own health insurance.  I didn't want to get stuck with whatever plan my employer happened to offer, and I didn't want to worry about losing my insurance if I changed jobs. But now the company I'm with is getting out of the insurance business, and I need to find new coverage.  The company I work for offers insurance, but like I said above, I don't want their plan.  And since they offer it, I'm not eligible for ACA (and I don't ...
