nursing - anon

After reading some posts on here written by nurses, it intrigues me why a nurse would want to get into the rat's nest world of MT.  Is it the lure of a work-at-home job?  Or is there something else I'm not aware of?  I was just reading on a nursing forum where many were complaining of being called off or being required to float, having their hours permanently cut back due to critical shortages and/or low census, even having foreign nurses brought in at a lower pay scale.  Guess it's scary out there even in nursing.

One person's 'ratnest' of MT is another person's way out of a job they hate - Just sayin

A list of the problems with a nursing job would be very long.

-dangerous to your health and well-being
-frustration dealing with unruly patients who fight you, hit you, or wrestle with you, causing back injuries, black eyes
-Latex allergies
-split shifts
-horrible treatment by Directors of Nursing (DONs)
-Dwindling respect from medical administration and doctors - no respect
-too much work and not enough time to care for patients because of all the paperwork

Those are just for starters

Wouldn't you love to visit messages boards like this for other careers? - I think it would be fun

I think it would be fun to visit some other career message boards, especially in this economy, to see what they are like. Maybe we can find one where everyone is happy and all new graduates find jobs and make lots of money from the first month.

Theyre out there - look on Google for career forums by - sm - Zircon

just typing _______(whatever career, such as nursing, billing, etc.) and then "forums" or "chat". They even have 'em for doctors.

If anyone finds happy people anywhere, doing anything, who love their career, let the rest of us know.
Reminds me - of a story

Years ago someone told me that while she was on vacation, she asked different people she met if they liked their work. She talked to people in a variety of professions, and only found one guy who claimed to be happy--then she said he told her he was a bum :)
There was a national survey last week I think 40% of all participants were happy - I wish I remembered where I saw that

It's true that when we're unhappy, we write about it, post about it, blog about it, and when we love our work, we work. Most of the time I work. Work isn't always fun. Occasionally I post.

Sometimes I remember something that puts it all in perspective, that old story about a man on the road from his village. He meets a traveler who asks him what kind of people heâll find there. The man from the village answers, âWhat kind of people did you find in the town you just left? âThe traveler replies, âSuch a complaining lot of people, which is why I left.â

The man from the village continues down the road and runs into another traveler who asks him the same question. The reply is different. âThe people in my last town were the kindest people youâll ever want to meet. Iâm sorry I had to leave.â The man from the next village answers, âThatâs just what youâll find here.â

I think it's the same with work.
I didn't quite finish that old story I referred to - Let me try again

Everybody knows this story anyway probably, but I forgot an important part of it. Let me try it again.

after seeing my paycheck drop in half and then half again over the past 12 years, I think I could put up with a lot for a nurse's salary compared to these sweatshop wages. I just find it hard to believe that a nurse would give it up for MT'ing.

Money and job opportunities are dropping for nurses too - Not as rosy as you may think

There are a few really good jobs in nursing, if you enjoy major politics and stress every minute of the day. Go take a look in person and get a reality check. Nursing is not what it used to be.
Don't forget the people yelling at you and complaining about you - Not a pretty picture

a rat's nest as the world of MT. I went from nurse to MT because I got tired of not being able to do things the way I was taught in nursing school. Most nursing facilities (hospital, nursing home, etc) are interested only in how much money they can make, not in how well the patient's are taken care of.

Instead of being able to "converse" with a doc an MT....sm - Just my opinion....

is transcribing through the computer screen, these same docs are face-to-face with nurses and are none too nice about it, either. My niece is a nurse and she asked if I have frustrations about docs who are nasty! My reply, of course, was "yes" but at least they really can't hear what I'm saying and I do feel better after that report is gone - unlike in a clinical or hospital setting where docs expect nurses to be pretty much under at their beck and call! I am an LPN but chose to put my licensure on "inactive" status and work as an MT - much more rewarding, really better $$ in the long run and I don't have to get dressed to deal with those dudes and dudettes, ya know what I mean?!

MT To Nursing
Mar 30, 2010

Any one out there going to nursing school, or at least starting with getting the prereqs out of the way, take a nurse aide job to help gain experience?  There are quite a few CNA positions at our local hospital.  Although I'm not a CNA, but working on pursuing my nursing degree, but I am considering taking a pay cut to do nurse aide work to gain the experience.  Just wondered if anyone else out there did this.  The only thing that scares me is that I've been at home ...

Have Any Of You MTs Been Nurses Or Going Into Nursing?
Aug 14, 2011

I started taking the nursing program at my local college 10 years ago and loved it, but dropped out after a year to get married, bad decision!  So, just looking to see if anyone here has been a nurse or is going into nursing and what they like/dislike about their jobs.  I am also looking into the RN program in the future.  ...

Something to consider before you invest in training.  Not saying don't do it, just be aware that you're not guaranteed a job when you graduate. http://money.cnn.com/2013/01/14/news/economy/nursing-jobs-new-grads/index.html?iid=HP_LN&hpt=hp_t2 ...

Decision To Go Back To School For Nursing?
Mar 02, 2010

Has anyone made the decision to go back to school for nursing?  I am 45 years old and am seriously considering going to school this fall.  I would be starting from scratch as I have no college education.  I am debating on whether to pursue an associates (RN) or bachelors degree (BSN).  I am wondering if anyone else near my age is doing this and how are they faring.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  ...

Nursing School And Loan Questions
Sep 08, 2011

Anyone seriously considering this?  I am concerned about the money issue, of course.  Did anyone receive a student loan that was enough to pay for books, supplies and have a little extra left over for living?  It's been so long since DH had a student loan, I can't remember anything about that.  I would still work part-time, of course, but that wouldn't put food on the table. I just can't stay in this proffession anymore, have to do something to get out of ...

Does Anyone Think That Coding Is Possibly As Hard As Nursing? SM
Apr 18, 2012

I am 3/4 through the Andrew's coding course and it is HARD!!!  Sometimes I think I wish I went into nursing.  A 2-year degree and you can start (in my area at least) at 30 an hour.  With coding, at my local hospital, they start at 26 an hour for inpatient coders, BUT you need experience!  I feel it may take me a few years to get up to the pay rate of 26/hour, and in between I will have to go back to school to learn ICD-10 and pass even more tests. AND, by the time I am ...

Thinking Of Going Into Nursing, Seeking Opinions
Jan 05, 2013

I just need opinions.  Due to pay cuts left and right having to complete with India, micromanaging, increasingly having to compete with India for work even within the same MTSOs we work for, having to worry about our USA-only companies being sold to bigger ones that hire offshore workers, continually having great accounts only to be told "oh they're going to VR but you'll still be doing ALL the editing" only to lose your account a month later, etc, I'm just plain sick of this ...

Hoping To Start Nursing In 2015 At 35

Hoping to start a nursing program.  I am 35 and have been a medical transcriptionist since graduating from high school.  I would like to eventually obtain a Master's in nursing.  I have been planning this for a while (almost two years), but I've been really nervous, so I have kind of put things off.  I think one thing I'm nervous about is it is my first time going to college.  I was trained for medical transcription at a technical school while still in hig ...
