FTP (file transfer protocol) HIPAA compliant? - Barb

Hello, my doc is finally going digital after three years of begging him to! His files are too large to email to me, and so I found I need to set up an FTP, and FileZilla was recommended, since it is HIPPA compliant. Does anyone have any experience setting this up? I am good at figuring things out, but this is driving me crazy and taking forever! Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

I have a doctor who sends his digital files to me by email - sometimes 15-20+ per batch, and sometimes very large as he does IMEs, PPDs, and Executive Physicals.

He zips them in a folder and emails the zipped folder.

Could he and you maybe try this as an alternative to FTP? Or backup in case the FTP site crashes or is unusable for some reason....

I use YouSendIt and for what you need, it is free. The doctor can send you his dictation and you can send back the work. For the volume I use, I use one of the Pro plans, but it is only $9.99 a month and I don't mind pay that little bit. It's a tax write off, too.

FTPs are too much trouble, I think, though have used them before. It's just easier to try something designed specifically for transcriptionists.

Try MyDocsOnline. I like it because it's easy for my clients to use, and is totally HIPAA compliant, designed for MTs, very reasonable pricing. Has a 15 day trial. Have used this for digital file sending for years, very nice program. Why not give it a trial run. Here's the link to their site:

Filezilla is great. You would be the server (or whatever they call it), he would be the client. You have to have web server space (IP) to set it up.

Download Filezilla, go to site manager, put in your IP address of the space you want your files to go, put in the username and password and do the same for the clinic that will be sending files.

trying to use the wizard and not connecting. Went to site manager, put in my IP address, question, though is username and address, a new one I set up? (which isn't working) or for internet? or what? Sorry, not very knowledgeable with these things.

FileZilla is extremely easy. Once you have the information as Midwest MT mentioned and you connect, you will have a live connection and it is just click and drag, i.e. click the files from your computer and drag them over. I haven't used it for MT but I have used it to upload web pages to a host -- super-easy; however, you do need their ftp info from the doctor's office or wherever.

I have downloaded FileZilla to use as a FTP. I have never dealt with this before as my company always set these kind of things up, but now am interested in a job that requires I have my own. From what I am hearing, if you have an XP computer, you are not HIPAA compliant. It violates regulatory requirements. Then why is MM not supplying us with Windows 7? My XP computer they gave me was freezing up, so they sent me another XP. I asked them why they didn't send me Windows 7 and they said XP was cheaper.
