Do you like transcribing for a woman better than a man or vice versa? (SM) - anon

Posted: Jan 19, 2010

I am to the point where I despise hearing a woman dictate because she is usually even more unorganized than my male dictators (if that were possible, lol), at least that is how it is for me.  The 1 that I am working on currently cannot make up her mind, is mushed mouth, once she makes up her mind she rattles it off so quickly that it is barely understandable, if at all at times and constantly goes back up into the report because she forgot something.

Just curious as to how every once else feels about this.

I don't think you can really make a valid generalization about that -- - SM

-- as to whether female dictators are more difficult or disorganized (or whatever) than their male counterparts (and I'm a male MT), but I think one CAN say that there's something about the pitch (or something) of some female voices that isn't picked up quite as well and so they tend to have more trouble with the dictation systems (getting cut off, dictation sounding fuzzy, etc.). Over the past 15 years of MTing, I've run into a few dictators who routinely get cut off during nearly every dictation and in ever case it has been a woman. That's the only thing we (the MTs and the tech support folks) can think of, is that it has something to do with the pitch, or volume, or combo of factors.

That said, however, my *current* crop of dictators has some excellent female dictators, a few excellent males, and a slug of dictators (both male and female) who dictate and re-dictate the same sentences over and over in an attempt to get them just right, apparently (and, of course, they never do).

I really do not care, male, female, all the same when it comes to MTing..n/m - .

I absolutely cannot stand the high-pitched, whiney, squeeky, 5-year-old talking female doctors.

UGGGHHHHH.

Huh? No. OTOH, dictators with curly hair drive me crazy :) NM - MissIndigo

THE OTHER WOMAN
Mar 30, 2014

I am one of those oldies, but goodies...higher education, BS university level, married to a professional as a young woman for many years.  At the time of my divorce, I told many of my friends and family, "When the men get away with doing this to their wives ("First Wives" movies needed to condone it), the corporations will do the same to the men, and those same men will not be able to point any fingers because they did the same thing to their women," a labor issue, if you will, wh ...

WOMAN'S ROLE
Mar 31, 2014

In answer to my original post to Val, only 2 issues here, Val:1. We are almost all woman. It is run like a system that once historically ran hospitals. We are not a Walmart, Kmart, Target, McDonalds. We are skilled workers, women for the most part, and from the old days, historically this has been a woman's role/job in a fraternity of higher powers, the men who once often had nuns as cohorts filling this postion for no pay at all.2. Although some individual hospitals may not care about thei ...

It's 7 hours since being terminated and I have begun the dismantling of my office, sorting through e-files, papers, sticky notes, reminders, etc., gotta oil the shredder because it's gonna be working overtime (pun intended).  After 26 years of working here in this room I have many emotions.  I loved working at home for Secrephone and Medquist.  MModal, however, is the worst, the worst management crew, no scruples, no morals, (just plain no brains), money-hungry execs loo ...

To All MTs Who Claim To Make More Money Than Woman With BS Degrees.....
Jun 13, 2012

Those of you who claim to make TONS OF MONEY TYPING....  You are not straight typing MTs under regular circumstances IF I believe you...and I don't.   You probably work 7 days a week, all hours of the day like most MTs.  You DO NOT work a regular 8-hour day, 5 days a week and make that much money.  If that were true...there would be much more competition.  The only perk is being at home.  Period...End of story.  Stop trying to sell me your ocean front pro ...

Transcribing With VR
Feb 29, 2012

This might be considered controversial, but has any MT out there used a VR program to "transcribe" dictation instead of actually using a keyboard to transcribe?  So I am not misunderstood, I'll be very literal here:  As the MT, you listen to the dictation and instead of typing it out, you speak what you are hearing into a VR program on your computer to produce the "transcribed" report.  I can't be the only one out here who has thought of this and the only reason I can co ...

Transcribing
Apr 21, 2015

I'm sorry, I need to blow off some steam and perhaps those who have their own accounts could shed some light.  I have been an MT for a very long time and in the past, what an MT did was TRANSCRIBE.  We didn't follow account specs or change sentences, etc.  Why has the MT industry come to this and why do the MTSO owners agree to this?  I don't mind at all fixing broken English, because I understand that process, but changing what a doctor says, because it's ...

Transcribing An Interview
Jul 14, 2010

I am doing some side work transcribing a research interview, and was wondering your opinions.  One of the respondents in the interview panel is ESL.  Her grammar is very often incorrect.  I asked them when I got the project if they wanted the transcription verbatim, and she said "yes, let's leave it true to form."  I had asked because the previous work had a lot of "like" and "you know" in it, and transcribing every utterance was actually really hard.  ...

Pay For Editing Vs. Transcribing
Jan 27, 2012

Hey guys I was just mulling over the fact that editing accrues 1/2 that of transcribing, yet it tends to be as difficult if not moreso depending on the butchering job it does to the dictation (heavens forbid they have a thick accent. then it truly only stands in the way of progress...)... both I & my mother are MTs & just kind of wondering- does anyone else think this is fair? Is there literally anything fair about this? I mean, even the base rates for transcribing aren't mucho buen ...
