Christmas Time - My Reality Check -- love what I do then MT reality sinks in - blessedMT

Posted: Dec 22, 2013

REALITY CHECK ... makes me wanna testify this Holiday Season, let me share. I am now working as an MT/ME at a major MTSO corporation - and then reality slaps me in the face, on a daily basis as I merrily type my little fingers away, almost to the point of feeling aches and pain penetrating into my metacarpal phalanges. Now do not get me wrong, I love what I do and enjoy my work... and I am very good at what I do (top Tier ME/MT and QA, at the top of the pay scale, and always maintain 98% plus accuracy) and, yes, one could say that I am "on top of my game." REALITY CHECK has hit me VERY HARD recently!! Plan for vacation (what is that??) Shop for a new car (budget...budget). Anything beyond the basic costs of living simply does not fit into my budget right now. So I ask myself: Shall I return to school? I know that it would cost multiple thousands of dollars to return to school, for example, in order to become proficient as a Medical Coder or possibly even earn my degree in some arena of Health IT such as Health Informatics -- or whatever it would take to utilize my vast experience as a Medical Language Specialist, MT/ME and to be able to transfer my vast medical knowledge to some other field where I could actually work and pay my bills, and then have a few dollars left over.....instead of struggling to live from "paycheck to paycheck." Obviously, work as an ME/MT is not the most lucrative profession and I am definitely not expecting to become a rich woman doing this type of work. Right now, I remain in this profession to simply pay my bills and the basic costs of living such as rent/mortgage payment, utilities, phone bill, and some food on the table. The basics, right??? So I ask myself, is it worth the effort to go back to school, and possibly get into MORE debt with student loans, etc., and then possibly after graduating I may earn a salary (let's just throw out a ballpark figure) say around $50K per year PLUS the increased debt incurred with the student loans and costs associated with going back to school, just to make a few bucks more per year. Okay, so then I thought about medical school - and for me that would mean taking the MCAT (again), possibly having to complete a Post-Bac Program (since it has been many years since I earned my Baccalaureate degree). Then also incurring even more debt, PLUS the 4 years of medical school, PLUS a residency to include 3 to 7 additional years of training (depending of course on the chosen specialty). Possibly ending up earning a physician's salary of $150K or so, maybe more if I specialize in an area of medicine that actually pays a bit more. OR... I also thought about going to law school, taking the LSAT which could mean investing in a pre-law LSAT preparation course (which could cost as much as $1,000 for the prep courses) and there are absolutely no guarantees that I will get into a "good law school." Furthermore, there are no guarantees to land a job with a descent salary working as an attorney. Frankly, I know a lot of unemployed attorneys....yikes !! So Many Choices ?? REALITY CHECK: For me, there are not so many choices after all, so for right now I have decided to stay put working at a large MTSO. The reality is -- right now (today) ... I MUST pay my rent/mortgage and my basic living expenses. And since I am right now working at home as an MT/ME, I have to pay for internet service, preferably DSL, and I must have a reliable computer system that will NOT CRASH in order to keep up with the minimum requirements, etc. etc. Right now I need to eat nutritious foods each and every day so that I will not get sick, or worse, become dehydrated, or get ill with a compromised immune system, or come down with the FLU. While at the same time my expertise MT/ME services are needed to help out with a "huge backlog" at my current job and the reports that were due yesterday. REALITY CHECK: Personally, I have over 20 years of experience in this industry, and I have previously worked in-house at several large teaching hospitals as an MT and supervisor, then transitioning to own an MT business with several dependable accounts (direct billing, of course, which was many years ago before Speech or VR) and I have also worked as a Medical Coder at a major hospital. So I have truly "Been There, Done That." Now I sit here and ask myself WHAT NEXT????? Yes, indeed I have some peace of mind while working at home and not having to deal with a lot of drama while working from my personal space in the home environment. All the while, I am truly praying for a favorable outcome to this situation working full-time as an MT/ME. THIS IS MY REALITY CHECK ... God is my only salvation. To God Be The Glory. Merry Christmas to you all !! Happy Holidays......

Yes, it is and has been very tough for most of us - sm

While I continue to work and look at other options, I also pray. I pray for myself and others in these difficult times. Through it all, I also have peace because God is my salvation.

Happy birthday, Jesus, and merry Christmas and a happier, more prosperous 2014 to everyone!

Amen - blessedMT

...and Amen

First, a few questions for you - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
How old are you? Do you have a family to support or is it just you? What is your passion? You mentioned you worked as a coder before - did you like doing that? If you have taken the MCAT before, you are obviously smart and have a bachelor's degree, but what is your bachelor's degree in?

My suggestion is to be realistic. Five years from now - me

[ In Reply To ..]
MT will most likely be worse than it is now. I was an MT for 27 years. I knew it was changing, but I had hoped to hold on a couple more years until my youngest got through college and then it would be my time. I worked 2 full-time jobs, working hard to pay off bills and be in a better financial situation.

I lost both my MT jobs due to offshoring or VR. Due to my level of experience no one ways to hire me, but MM and Nuance, and I haven't been willing to go there. The local community college system has stopped offering a MT course because there isn't enough work.

I decided to go back to school now, as there isn't much in the way of employment in my area. I know I don't want to be a nurse and have opted to pursue a degree in medical assisting. There are numerous openings in my area and my community college has 100% placement. The total program is 5 semesters at a cost of approximately $8000. I had some college years ago and with the spring semester I will have completed all the core classes and will only have the medical classes to go, so my workload will be a little lighter. I am also taking courses towards being a coder, just to obtain other skills that will be beneficial in obtaining employment.

Anyway, be proactive. Take a class or two. Figure out what you want to do after MT and work towards it. There was an article in our paper today about paralegals and how that is a good industry. One of the 4-year universities offers a 19-week intensive course and several of the students have jobs before they get their certificate. If you want to go to law school that would be a good start without a lot of time/money spent.

Don't be like me and be starting from scratch after 50 and having to work multiple jobs at low pay in order to pay my bills. I've been told multiple times that I'm overqualified for jobs I am working and that I should be in management, but there are no management jobs, at least with my educational level, so I take what I can get.

How about - Val

[ In Reply To ..]
physician assistant, ultrasonographer, rad tech. If you liked coding, go back there and schedule classes around that job. If you ran a business, you should be more than qualified to step into management almost anywhere and get out of the paycheck to paycheck crap.

I am getting out of the medical field all together - going into social work

[ In Reply To ..]
I will graduate with my associates in may and hopefully on to University in the summer. I'm 36 and I will have my bachelor's by 40.

That's great! I've always wanted to go into social work - Good For You..nm

The more I delve into e-commerce (selling on eBay, Amazon, Etsy, and CraigsList) and the more I network within these circles, the more I'm astounded at how much money it's really possible to make. Whether you're looking to make an extra $600 a month or $60,000 a year, the answer is ... yes. Scale it up to however high your dreams go. It is VERY possible to make 6 figures, if that's what you'd like. I am throwing myself body, mind, and soul into this. I am going to do whatever it takes to succeed in this.

I am making rookie mistakes, learning from them, not repeating them, and, incredibly, still making money despite it all.

Going for group mentoring with one of my teachers out of town in three weeks! First time I've stayed in a hotel away from my home in almost eight years. My eBay earnings are paying for it. :)

There's light at the end of the tunnel. The dog days are over for me, and they could be for you. Merry Christmas!

Curious: What are you doing on Ebay to make money? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I think you may have posted this before, but I don't remember. So how are you making money?

Answer - In-House Lead

[ In Reply To ..]
For eBay: Vintage electronics, vintage advertising, clothing (mostly used, but some new), vintage and antique china, discontinued needlework kits, Anime, vintage board games. It's best if you start out with things you know about first and then expand your horizons. I am now learning about high-end collectible glass, such as Murano from Italy.

Amazon is a different game entirely.
So are you selling and advertising for someone? - and they pay you a portion?

What kind of anime do you sell?
Anime - In-House Lead
[ In Reply To ..]
This is where knowing a niche comes in handy, and why it's important to start off in niches you already know and like.

If you know Anime, you know that there are a lot of the Japanese movies from the 80s and early 90s that were put out on VHS but never released later on DVD. Those VHS tapes are now collectibles. If you look on YouTube, you can see people into Anime bragging and showing off their VHS tapes (haha). They don't bring in huge money; they are more bread-and-butter items that I can find easily for less than dollar and flip for $20 each, occasionally more. Easy rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat.

I have a brand-new-with-tags Sailor Moon babydoll-style dress, imported from Japan, that I need to list. Got that at a garage sale for $2. But I've been dragging my feet on getting it put up because the labels are all in Japanese and I'm not sure of the sizing. It's in my "need to research further" pile.

A really good niche to sell in, if you know about it, is crafting.

You're inspirational! - wheres_my_job

Christmas Eve. Midnight. I just got up to read a little.

Lucky you, getting to go stay in a hotel somewhere, get away and move forward in your new career at the same time!

I'm trying to see if a friend can somehow collaborate with me on the online sales thing. She's much better at that marketing thing than I am - no, I shouldn't say that. The things I'm selling - I was going to sell it for 2 bucks less than they actually sold for - OTHER people had to tell me to jack up my price. I'm just not good at that kind of thing. I'm more of a "give away the store" kind of person. I need help with that.

Here's what I say: "Sell, sell, sell!" Happy New Year!

I got the idea from this board! I just took it and ran with it. nm - In-House Lead

As I have posted here before and as you will read in the linked success story below, you do NOT need fancy equipment or money to get started. I use my cell phone camera and, in the early days, my Weight Watchers food scale to weigh my packages.

Need To Know The Reality About An MT Career
Oct 26, 2011

I am considering going through training to become an MT and have been reading the posts on this forum for several weeks now. Before I make a decision I would like some opinions from you all who know this industry. Specifically, I would be looking to do MT on a part time basis. I am a stay- at- home mom with two kids in elementary school. My questions: 1) How realistic is it to find a part time job in MT (after training) where I can work my own hours from home? It seems like a lot of ...

You all do know that because this is a public forum, that ANYONE can say WHATEVER they want and pump up their company, MQ, M*Modal, Nuance, ad. naseum?  Right?  You do know that, okay.  Back in the "day", we kinda knew who was who, and what was what; it is not that way anymore.  It is a whole new world.  You can open a new company with a couple bucks, post a lot of "WOW" comments on Google reviews and what-not, hey, looking good, good ratings/reviews.  Really, you&n ...

Economic Reality And MQ Policies
Mar 02, 2010

Years ago, hospitals were charged 15 cents a line.  Now you see ads for 9 cents.  You all know all the factors that make this possible.  The executives are not going to lower their salaries; they are going to continue to try to lower their cost per line of transcription.  If you are doing this to make some extra money, that is one thing, but for most MTs there is going to be no way you will be able to earn a decent full-time salary unless you can work 100 hours a week.  ...

When Will The Stats Show The Reality In Transcription?
Nov 15, 2009

In searching the web for a new job I keep running into federal and state stats that say the low end salary of a newbie transcriptionist is $14 and high end is $24.  They must be talking American dollars because Indians make $0.78 an hour.  They also say it is a growing field (so much so it's spilling into the sea and floating to India) and there is a high demand for experienced medical transcriptionists (!?)  Where the heck do they get their outdated information???  I f ...
