Audio Hours - Paula

Posted: Apr 07, 2015

Hi Everyone!  I'm used to typing and getting paid hourly.  I'm filling out an application that asks how many audio hours I can transcribe during a day.  I only want to work 4 - 5 hours a day.  What should I answer?  Thanks!

No more than 2 audio hours - sm

...and that really depends on what you'll be transcribing. With medical, you can usually figure 3 hours to transcribe 1 audio hour. Again, that depends on the quality of the audio, quality of the dictator, etc.

Thanks, but now I see they want audio minutes. Any help?!

I transcribe 1.5 to 3 hours of audio (90-180 minutes) per shift. The company doesn't count time spent on anything but keyboarding, so figure 1.5 to 3 hours of audio in about 7 hours of what they call "work." This is with horrible dictators and double horrible VR. If I was paid $1.00 per audio minute, I wouldn't be complaining.

How to Figure it Out - see msg

Well, there are 60 minutes in a hour, right? So 60x2=120 minutes.

That being said, it's hard to know, anyway. I personally would never work by the audio minute. If you've ever done serious transcription (as in acute care), you know a 2-minute dictation could mean the dictator is talking so fast you have to keep backing up and slowing him or her down; and you could end up spending 30 minutes on that one dictator, and getting paid only for 2 minutes.

Actually, getting out of MT is a really good plan for all, if you ask me---which is what I did.

Anyway, good luck with this MT job. I would recommend keeping your focus on getting out.

Working by the audio minute can be great! I actually prefer it to working by the line. Sure you might get the speed talkers (or templates) but how many times have you had to delete half your report because the doc can't make up their mind? The docs that hem and haw the whole way through, talk slowly, flip through charts, forget to hang up, etc. are all things you don't have to worry about when getting paid by the minute.

I have been paid by the line and by the minute, and I definitely prefer by the minute. I make more money in less time with it.

As for the original question. It really depends on your platform and your dictators. I can do about 20-35 minutes in an hour. On average it takes me about 3.5 to 4 hours to do 100 minutes.
4:1 - justright

I've been transitioning into GT for the past year. It usually takes me 4 hours to do 60 minutes of audio from beginning to end. This includes 2 listens, proofreading, and research. In my experience, the audios I've received have been 100% better than what we receive from MT.

Audio
Aug 10, 2010

I am a "newbie."   I have tested for 2 small companies and the audio was so bad I just couldn't hear enough to transcribe.  Are all dictations this bad, or is it just some of them?   The parts I could understand were fairly simple, but the audio sounded like a tape recorder when you are holding down rewind and play at the same time.  I am just curious.  Maybe my hearing is just not what it should be.   Appreciate any response, ...

Pay For Audio
Apr 27, 2012

in contacting a general transcription company for work, I was told "a one-on-one interview, 60 - 90 minute tapes, generally generates $40-$45 per tape."  does this seem like a low figure??  I don't know much about these types of dictations. They said most transcriptionists complete one 60 to 90 minute tape per day.  so how long do you think it would take to complete 90 minutes of two people interview and is $45 too low for that type of work??  just asking.  ...

Pay Per Hour Of Audio
Apr 22, 2010

I'm looking at a job that pays 50-55 dollars per recorded hour of audio.  This is interview or straight dictation transcription.  Does this sound okay?  I'm thinking if it takes me 2 hours to transcribe an hour, that wouldn't be such a bad deal.  I'm just not sure how long it would take me.  I do transcribe very fast...shortcuts are used for medical but can implement for this type of transcription as well.  Just not sure that the pay is reasonabl ...

Pay Per Audio Hour
Dec 15, 2011

How long does it take to transcribe 1 audio hour of dictation?  When I started, I was told we should average it as 10 minutes per every hour, but 10 minutes seems low to me now.  It would probably take me about 20 minutes to do a 10 minute job today, with proofing and looking up words, etc.  Then again, if you are learning something new, that might not be so unrealistic.  Just looking for opinions on this from those who have done it.  Keep in mind, I would be doing non-m ...

Terrible Audio
Aug 18, 2013

I have been having exceptionally bad audio lately from normally good dictators and wonder why. Could this be another cost cutting measure somehow, or maybe they okayed docs to dictate under water or in their car or wherever on old crappy cell phones or something? It's bad enough to have to face the daily FIESA attack, but to take double the time to get through a report because of horrific audio is just the icing on the cake. Anybody else find this?
