Are we headed for 0.01 per line?? - Looking

Posted: Jan 17, 2012

Looking at the jobs posted, and I have seen 3 positions in the last week paying 0.06 per line.  SIX CENTS!  And they are transcribing giigs too.

What's next -- 0.05?  Then 0.04? Then 0.03? Then 0.02?  Then 0.01?

This trend is frightening!

Yes it it is---- - Old and Tired MT

But people will still tell you that you are "lucky to have a job".

That other chorus will be here soon. - TheyllChimeIn

In addition to the "you're lucky to have a job" bunch, let's not forget that other chorus -- the "you must suck as an MT" crowd who insists that everything is PEACHY KEEN so your work must be rife with errors!!

It's a shame that you have a job - sm

Is that better than you're lucky or blessed to have a job? It's all how you look at it I guess. I've left careers before and gone a different direction because I was able to do better elsewhere. That's always an option, right?

You're only headed for 0.01 per line if - NormaJean

you're willing to take it. I don't get the deal here. Doesn't anybody work with their own accounts? Is everyone here at the mercy of an MTSO?

I'm not, Norma Jean - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have three of my own accounts and charge and am paid an excellent cpl. There is no middle man and I will never be at the mercy of an MTSO. I will shut down and go do something, anything, else if and when that day presents.

I agree with you ... you get what you're willing to accept.

But what about when you get sick, want a vacation, a day off? - When equip fails, grouchy OM or Dr. nm

Need time off/equipment problems/whatever? I talk to the doctor or the office manager. I have relationships with all of them. We work it out. We're all just people. We know each other. I have doctors who sent gifts when my kids were born. I get bonus checks for Christmas. Working for a transcription company isn't the only way to go. Is that what the schools focus on? It's baloney. Not to mention there's a whole other thriving world of home-based IC transcription out there (legal, academic, general, etc.). You're only screwed if you let yourself be. Not a slam, just legitimate puzzlement on my part of why people just accept that they're going to be walked all over when there are so many viable options.
I, too, have my own accounts - - sm

And it's all in how you set up the TAT. I never set that for less than 48 hours and weekends don't count. If it comes in Fri it's due back Tues. Of course, it can get back sooner. One of my accounts is 72 hours' TAT. As far as equipment, I have a spare everything: Keyboard, pedal, head-set, hard drive, power supply, etc. Even an old laptop just in case. I have a four-port dial-up system sitting in my garage if for some reason the internet service I use has issues. I use Dropbox to put a copy of all of my templates, auto correct, normal doc, and file folders in just in case something crashes, that way everything I need to keep going is backed up and ready when I am.

Of course MT compensation will continue to fall - Someone has to pay for these expensive IT systems

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't think for a minute that while the likes of Medquist was cutting your salary that there was a corresponding price cut given to the account. No, prices to their clients rose and MT compensation fell.

You are SPOT ON! NM - PassingThru

If we wouldn't agree to work for 6 cents a line, 8 cents a line or even 10 cents a line, our profession would be uplifted...We SHOULD be making 14 cents a line at least! Compared to what every other aspect of medical care makes? And we are facing all the fines and penalties of the HIPPA rules? Time to just refuse to settle for 6 cents a line and uplift our profession again!!!

Apr 22, 2010

I do have some benefits with the VR job, but not good enough to even take them on right now.  After 3 months I will start accruing PTO up to 12 days a year.  Is it worth it?  I was thinking having benefits would be really nice for once in the last 16 years, but now I am thinking it may not be worth the struggle to make a living on VR.  They said the platform for transcription is chartnet or chartscript?  What do you all think? ...

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Gross Line Versus 65 Character Line
Aug 19, 2010

Anyone know if 5 cents per gross line is good or not? Better than 10 cents a 65 character line??   A company is offering this to me & says that at least 1/2 of every report is templated but you still get paid for it.  I make 10 cents a 65 character line with the company I work for at this time.  Please advise so I can make a decision to test or not with them.  ...

Line Rate For 65 Printable Character Line
Jul 19, 2011

When a company states a line rate for  a "65 printable character line" does that mean they do not pay for spaces?    I saw an ad saying they pay the highest in the business, which was about 8.5 cents for 65 printable character line.  That to me says without spaces, as it is not a printable character, so that would be a horrible rate surely not one of the best in the business.  Wonder why there is no respect for our thumbs !!!!   ...

MTSOs - Why Anyone Would Do VR For 0.03 Per Line Or Straight Transcription For 0.07 Per Line
Mar 13, 2012

It's beyond me why anyone would do VR for 0.03 per line or straight transcription for 0.07 per line, even 0.08 stinks.  Are we all that desperate to let these companies get away with not paying a living wage?  It's outrageous.  As long as MTs send their resumes to these companies and apply for these positions, the longer it will take to bring us back to the pay level we deserve.   At this point, i'd rather starve then sell my soul to the devil. ...
