Someone I was talking to told me coding - has the same risk

as transcription of being automated and/or off-shored. Needless to say this was very discouraging. Anyone have an opinion about this? I hope it's not true.

I am not wasting my breath on this again. This topic has been argued over and over. There are discussions below.
If it bothers you, don't reply! - Grrrrr

You took the time to respond, but with nothing useful. Good job.
Well for someone who doesn't want to waste her "breath" - You sure have a lot to say;

none of which is helpful. Maybe I wanted some different point of views from OTHER people NOT JUST YOU.
SAVE YOUR BREATH and don't reply to something that doesn't interest you. Wow.
Well I searched the archives -- didn't find anything - current about this topic;

However, if I had to place a bet, I'd say that there are a couple of posters who are probably instructors/employees of Andrews and/or Career Step trying to recruit potential students. And then there are a couple more condescending posters who think everyone but them is too stupid to be a coder. It's reading a report and assigning number codes...it's not rocket science.

It is all over the archives. One thread is still on this page.

It's being discussed for good reason. Because - its always a possibility.
Always a possibility for almost any job now - another MT 2 coder

I considered this and joined some coding FB groups and saw that there were coding centers in India hiring and outsourcing has happened, especially outpatient, but there were still many jobs in my area, and inpatient especially seemed to hire mostly Americans (not all). I just knew that I could not stand continuing in MT until I retired, considered this as well as any other jobs, and realized most jobs can be outsourced now and decided to go ahead with coding, with my eyes open. As stated here by others, there are many other areas besides coding that we could also do with our knowledge base. I have both CPC and CCS and am now studying for more certifications so that I will have more opportunities. I am no longer depressed and hating work every day, I LOVE my job!! I am so glad that I did this.
I believe it will be true in the not-too-distant future. - Its okay for now, but it would be -

foolish to think it's a career that can't be outsourced or offshored. The wisest thing to do would be to always be working on a Plan-B, just in case.
I don't think it will - happen

Reimbursement is based on coding. Coding is also not just one thing. The field is expansive and has many limbs. I came from transcription but have been coding for 10 years. I don't see it. I am not worried. That's my opinion.
Built-in Plan B - Coder

Coding is not just reading a note and assigning codes. If that was all it is, coders would not warrant the salaries they get. It is more involved than that, especially for inpatient and highly specialized areas that are under scrutiny by CMS for fraud and abuse.
Computer-assisted coding is already a reality. It does not change much. Coders still do all the rest of the work of coding that computers cannot do, like clinical decision making and evaluation of documentation adequacy.
Coding is part of HIM. Knowledge of coding includes many other code sets (classification systems) that we never talk about here and it is a basic skill for most jobs in HIM. There is a career map on the AHIMA website that shows the many careers HIM and informatics that coders can move into.
Coding is a prerequisite for clinical documentation improvement, compliance, auditing, chargemaster development, administration, informatics, consulting, education, and other areas in HIM. Coders already have "a backup plan" in those careers. New career areas are opening up regularly now, too.
Economic and security factors mitigate against offspring. The stakes are too high in coding. Facilities learned their lesson from their MT experience. They are still responsible for every error, and they are aware that they cannot tolerate them to save money by offspring. Hospital administrators are personally liable in a way they never were for MT. The attention Joint Commission is now placing on transcription will likely serve to inhibit any interest in offspring coding, as well.
Every time this question comes up, a bunch of non-coders rush over gloating and waving "coding is dead" signs. How they know so much about the future of something they do not understand is a mystery. It is certain that they do not understand it, because if they did, they wouldn't be saying it.
I agree that this is a tiresome issue. If someone does not want to go into this career, just don't. There is no need to drive others away from it to make yourself feel better about your fears and choices.
Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day. I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December. The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding. So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...
I am really surprised that there is no one talking about DIT. I know that I am not the only one that got the shaft from them. The owners last excuse for not paying me for work completed was that he just found out that he was losing his eyesight!. Again, I fell for it hook, line and sinker. He couldn't answer his emails because he had to find someone else to read them to him. By the end of the conversation, I was in tears..... I am such a fool. I did however, get my pay in full, ...
Must be extremely busy with M*Modal today. Nobody has anything to say. Either that or they were taught properly and know if they can't say anything nice they won't say anything at all! ...
a set schedule, but I also thought as an IC you should be able to say how much you charge, not let the MTSO tell you how much they are willing to pay you. ...
anyone else tired of being talking down to by their QC, so sick of it, they act like we are babies and they are the only ones with knowledge. So we make a mistake, their mistake in this company if making the point value so high on silly things, but there again that is one way of getting rid of us and giving more to off-shoring. Just tired of it all but looking every chance I get. And I guess the higher ups who get copies of all the QC emails probably are eating it up when they ...
Gotta love George Carlin; he doesn't mince words. As I listened to his monologue, I felt like he was describing most MTSO's, not just corporate America:

Being structured on job titles and salary ranges will help us ensure that we are market competitive and allow for easier integration ...
work and said the use the "M Modal" platofrm. What is that? I know back in the Medquist day it was DocQScribe. Is it that, something like that, or something completely different? ...
People where I live have all started saying Mmbye when they say goodbye. Like they are getting off the phone and they say mmbye. It's driving me nuts. ...
Does anyone know if there isa good website when asking general questions with MT recruiters? Sometimes I forget to askcertain questions until after I hagve hung up the pone? I have made lists before, but would also like another opinion or two. Thanks ...
The hopeful folks....did you forget we have not even started with the new guidelines by which our work will be audited at a yet unspecified date? You may be feeling all warm and comfy right now with your 99.9% to 100% reviews. I would not be counting on that. I've had plenty of those, too, and regularly achieved the quarterly bonus up until recently.
So, I work 25 hours, and they audited 1 report only with 1 error and I am at a tad over 98%. Meanwhile, I pended 4 jobs and that ...
Note, these are non-MT jobs.
I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." These are all basically customer service jobs which might include a little tech help and also might include some upselling.
Anyone have a take on this? After I quit MT, I SWORE I would never do any job that was not hourly or otherwise a guaranteed amount per paycheck.
Has anyone done this type of work? I guess I'm curious what "audio talking minute" means. I'm assuming it means not ...
for acute care. I sent them the following email and wonder if I came across as rude.
Hi. I have tried contacting you all several times. I was hired, finished the paperwork, got the foot pedal and then it seemed like you all forgot about me. I got another email just like this one and responded to a girl, was told she would get back with me and again I was forgotten. Please let me know if I can work for you all or not. If not, please do not email again. ...
in such slow halting manner, almost like a computer voice only worse...I have this dodo at maximum speed and he is still so slow I want to browse between windows...
this is probably the result of using voice transcription machines. Hello, we're human !! please just talk like a regular people-person... ...

I have been transcribing for 11 years and everytime I get a fasting talking dictator with an accent, it slows me down so much that it affects my production. I have slowed down the speed and added several expanders but that does not seem to help.
Are there any tips or suggestions anyone has that can help?
Thanks,

I'm aware of the increase in lines per hour to 186 (average between regular and edited) which I think might be a little challenging to sustain on a regular day-in and day-out basis, but why is no one discussing the increased weekly line requirements. It's a pretty significant jump. ...
This company got a huge account that we as MTs cleaned up their late reports at a rate of 9 cpl (1,000 to 2,000 or more) as they put them in our system. Not a bad line rate, right? Dictation was bad, sound quality sucked, and on and on.
Now that they are dictating into our system daily, the "contract has been renegotiated" and if we still want to type for the account we are getting 7.5 cpl. What a damned ripoff!!
Who can guess what company this one is? I' ...
We also are awaiting urine culture. Preliminary she has 2 organisms less than 10 to the 5th in quantity. Not sure how to type this. 10 and then 5 superscript?? ...
what would you do about it. My TL repeatedly tells us to get off the system when the work volume is low because we are taking food out of other MTs mouths because they cannot feed their families or pay their bills because they need to get at least 20,000 lines per pay, but they cannot do that if we stay on the system, and we need to have compassion for them and get off the system so the ones who need it the most can pay their bills. Even if our line count is not met, they need i ...
That you can't work on any computer besides a Medquist computer? I don't get along my CCM. We don't like each other. I wanted to load my programs on my laptop so I could work when I was away from home, and I was told that was not possible. I said I had done it in the past. I was told, not anymore. Support backed him on it.
But here lately I have heard people talking about working at Starbucks!!!! That even during training they ...
