a set schedule, but I also thought as an IC you should be able to say how much you charge, not let the MTSO tell you how much they are willing to pay you.

When you're an IC, you're YOUR boss.

This is why I always ask what YOUR contract said that you gave to the MTSO.

Now, the reality is, an MTSO is NOT likely to negotiate terms. Even as an IC, it's all about negotiation. Anyone could walk in and say, I'm an IC, I won't work a schedule and I charge 10 cpl. The MTSO then says, okay thank you. So when you're setting your rates, you still have to be consistent with what the market is bearing.

IC can negotiate with MTSO but there are limits. IC can set what they want if getting own client and eliminating the MTSO, but then there is the competition factor of mega-MTSOs underbidding you and winning the work.

We are limited either way, and MTSOs keep bidding lower to get the client in the first place. I think they take 2 to 3 cpl off the MT. sucks, huh?

Sure, you can set your price. But just see how many want to - hire you if you ask more than they payl nm

Do you really think that by declaring yourself an IC, you can tell someone what to pay you? That would be a hoot. Of course, you can set your own rate for anything, but they don't have to hire you. Do you think they hire you first, and then you tell them what you will be paid?

Think of it this way. You are a landscaper. Your bid for a job is $35 an hour. Your client finds someone who will do the job for $30 an hour. Do you think there is some law whereby the client has to hire you?

a job, I'm curious what exactly are you disliking? That is EXACTLY how contractors get work - by bidding on a job and the client can either accept it or go with someone lower.

I just don't understand what people are thinking here. I have a feeling some of the other posters have limited experience in the workforce.

I have been in IC on and off throughout my work history (both inside and outside MT). This means I get a job, someone gets work performed, and we both agree to the terms. They tell ME what their needs are. I do not tell THEM. If I don't like the terms, I don't have to agree to the position.

I would like to hear from the dislikes with respect to what they think is wrong with this arrangement.

This company got a huge account that we as MTs cleaned up their late reports at a rate of 9 cpl (1,000 to 2,000 or more) as they put them in our system. Not a bad line rate, right? I am really surprised that there is no one talking about DIT. I know that I am not the only one that got the shaft from them. The owners last excuse for not paying me for work completed was that he just found out that he was losing his eyesight!. Again, I fell for it hook, line and sinker. Note, these are non-MT jobs. I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." These are all basically customer service jobs which might include a little tech help and also might include some upselling. Anyone have a take on this? I have been transcribing for 11 years and everytime I get a fasting talking dictator with an accent, it slows me down so much that it affects my production. It's just reorganization because of Nuance buying Transcend, as far as I can see, and we all knew that was coming. As far as MM buying Nuance, you have to be kidding. MM was just bought by Chase, and they are in bad shape financially. They (MM) refused an offer from an unnamed company prior to the sale, and that offer was much higher than Chase's offer, FYI.
