I'm pretty sure AHIMA requires a certain number of continuing education hours to maintain a credential and assume AAPC does also but I'm wondering if you have multiple coding credentials, do you have to do separate CE hours for each one or can use the same hours for more than one credential. Does anyone know?

[ In Reply To ..]If you have a credential from each organization, you can use the same CEUs for each if the CEU would be accepted by each.
If you have more than one credential with a AAPC, you would need twice (48) what you would need for one (24). If you have more than one from AHIMA, you don't need twice, but how many you need depends on the credentials. For a CCS, for instance, you would need 20, and for an extra CCS-P, you would need 10 more.
That's just generally speaking, of course. Policies change, too, but for your purposes now, if you got a CPC and a CCS, you could double-dip with the CEUs as long as each organization otherwise accepted them. You'd have to do an annual self-assessment quiz for the CCS, which would give you CEUs good for both.
It's all very complicated. One organization has an online calculator to figure it all out. :)
There are a lot of ways to get free CEUs, though, so the cost is minimal. If anyone tells you it's expensive, they're not trying very hard!

Why in the world would any MT seek to further their credentials, i.e., CMT, etc., when it doesn't make one whit of difference in how you are paid? So many posts here regarding highly qualified, CMT's, etc., that can't find a job for 8cpl? Why the hoopla about providing classes for CMT CE credits when Nuance does not recognize the CMT status???? I am a CMT, and it doesn't seem to matter one hill of beans these days whether you are or not (pay wise, I mean.) ...

A certificate of completion (of your course or education program) does not make you a CMT. The AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity) offers 2 different credentials: RMT (for those with less experience) and CMT.
