Do Coders Have to be Super Fast Typists? - April
Posted: Mar 24, 2015
From your on-the-job experience as coders, how much typing is involved? Do you have to be super fast, or is something like 40-50 enough to do the work?
Hunt and peck will be enough - Coder

Coding is not typing, data entry, or clerical work.
The job is primarily reading and complex decision making. Most MTs can do that. If you would call yourself a "slow reader," a "plodding worker," or someone who does not like to work really industriously, or who does not like to make decisions independently, or you don't like detailed, precision work requiring background research, or if constant change and conflicting guidelines give you hives, coding is not for you.
I know a lot of coders who pretty much hunt and peck. I know a lot who use the number pad, but that is not necessary, either.
In reading another post trying to help someone, what if we started a post with our best tricks for being faster? What shortcuts do you use? What do you feel like saves you the most time?
I think this would be great for newbies and seasoned MTs. ...
I recently downloaded the free version of Express Scribe. The "Welcome" message plays with no problem, but any file that I try to load plays super-fast. I am pretty sure I checked all the settings, such as F10 (normal play back speed) and the speed control in the bottom right hand corner. If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it. I did send an email to tech support but will probably never get an answer b/c I didn't purchase it. ...
Our hospital does not accept abbreviations for oncology medications. So, for R-CHOP we have to type -
R
= Rituximab
C
= Cyclophosphamide
H
= Doxorubicin Hydrochloride (Hydroxydaunomycin)
O
= Vincristine Sulfate (Oncovin)
P
= Prednisone
Not in a format like that, but I didn't want to type them all out. We would have to type those five drugs out. Is this the standard for anyone else? ...
Just recently had a job fair here....they are offering these positions for $15-20/hour. I know it's temporary, but it's still unbelievable. I wish I could take a LOA and go do it! The commute would kill me on gas, but I still might make more than transcribing, especially if there is no work coming in! ...
dollars. Can't improve what is already top-notch. If we are already producing the maximum we can, already mastered those horrific docs, what then? Real incentivizing. Oh well. ...
I find medical terminology quite fascinating and enjoy learning about the body and such. I found a t.v. series where they do autopsies on real humans while discussing the functions of the body, various ailments, numerous terms, revelations of their findings, and a whole lot more. They were very respectful and adult about all of it, and I learned a lot. Even if I did know about something, they helped explain it in a way that helped me understand it better.
I am very squimish about this stuff in ...
It seems lately I have had a lot of corrections where they are removing what I have typed and marking as [UNCLEAR]. I am not getting dinged, but the reason this is bothering me so much is because they are doctors I am familiar with and know what they say. It's not like a skip is happening and I'm adding in something. There are dictating, not always the best dictations, but because I'm familiar with them I know what it is.
Makes me feel like I don't know what I ...
Is anyone else even just a little angered with the email from the CCM about the weekly statistics?
The part that really steams my broccoli is "This is no different than if you were to get a quarterly review or yearly review with your pros and cons listed and where improvements need to be made."
Well.... when the CCM and QA lead get quarterly reviews, dont they get RAISES? That is how the rest of the world works! RAISES. My teen son works at Taco Bell and he just got his 6 month review on hi ...

Has anyone any suggestions for a super good keyboard with a light touch response? I hate the keyboard that came with my work equipment, bought another, but the keys clatter when I type and it's distracting. Before I get a new one, I'd like to get some suggestions.
Thanks in advance my co-workers! ...
I know there are lots of variables that go into productivity, but I am interested to know what is considered fast for an MT. How many lines per hour are the top MTs producing? ...
This is a peds pt who had a VP shunt placed at 9 months for intrauterine strokes. Can not confirm this term anywhere, but the doc is VERY clearly saying this!
had a partial "cerebralectomy" but has had no complications since then.

It was a lonely little document I got to type! Somehow missed the ASR machine. Did it in 10 minutes. It was the of the same length as the previous ASR job that took me 20 minutes to do. ...
I don't know what these companies expect. I think they all think we are robots that can be programmed. My quality is excellent but I'm not fast enough doing VR. I have NEVER been able to do VR as fast as I can type, but they seem to think that with VR you should be able to do TWICE as much as straight typing-- not! I wish they WOULD just get robots to do the work-- then they wouldn't have to pay ANYTHING-- just the initial cost of the robots. With what they ...
So much for the slow death, we have now been given an account because of loss of work in my account I have had for 20 years. Given an account that is total ESL residents and PAs. No following style of dictation. Absolutely NOT to be found or understood who they are, much less dictating on patients not even entered correctly by their MRN. I have not had to send anything to QA but now it is to this. They want me to fail. So, guess what I will continue to w ...
