Coding salaries - fivefingers

Posted: Jan 24, 2015

I say "sorry" in advance if this has been posted before, but I am new to the Coding forum.

I plan to get out of MT and go into Coding.  I have decided on The Andrews School.  I have a contact who is the CEO of a remote coding business, and she highly recommended this school.

When just quickly talking about salary, she said coders make between 50K to 60K, which would be wonderful.   What I am wondering is ..... are coders paid by production or hourly.

Thanks for any info.

I have seen some companies that pay by the chart. I have been a coder for just over a year and my salary is at the higher end of the range the CEO quoted you.

Edit: I am an Andrews graduate, so if you have any questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them for you.

Thank you. So, I guess it is definitely worth going back to school for coding.

60K is not a starting salary for coders. The people I know who make that kind of money work as auditors or compliance officers. Heads-down coders probably make more in the range of 35K to 40K. No. this is not based on an inflated AAPC salary survey, it is based on real world experience.

Thanks for your comment. I realize that I will not start at the top of this salary range. Whatever it is, though, it will get me out of MT, so I can once again be proud of my profession and start to make some decent money again.
The AAPC and AHIMA salary surveys. - Coder

The AAPC and AHIMA salary surveys are not inflated. If anyone says they are, I have to wonder if they saw the survey and understood it, because the pay ranges are given, not just averages. Ranges are given for new coders, too, not just experienced ones. Ranges are also given by geographic area. Both surveys are in line with federal pay rates for that job classification.

Coders can be paid on production or hourly. At my facility, we can do either. Some of our coders work second jobs doing contract coding, and it pays quite well.

I posted the results of the latest AAPC survey about a month or two ago. The link below may be it. That discussion contains the usual argument from the noncoder objectors, so maybe they can save their breath this time.

The AHIMA survey posted at www.ahima.org/careers lists the average salary for coding professionals at $49,222. Some make less, some make more. That is in line with what the CEO told you.

I don't think you can go wrong with Andrews.
thank you - fivefingers

Thank you for your help!

Not the OP, but I have a question for you - sm

Do you work remotely or in-house? I've seriously been considering Andrews, too.
TIA for any info.

When I first started, I was on site a few days a week. I now work remotely most days. I can work on site whenever I want to. It's just a whole lot easier not to have to commute. Also, since there are so many distractions in the office, I am much more productive when I work from home!

I have also been a coder for just over a year. I code clinic work on site for one of the clinics in our health system. I am paid hourly but the pay can vary if you are certified or not.

MT Salaries
Aug 15, 2010

I was looking at the job postings at the local hospital and noticed something very odd.  The hospital here is hiring kitchen aides with no experience or education and the pay offered is $700 a month more than what they are offering for their MT positions.  Kitchen helpers are starting at $2769/month while MTs are starting at $2069.  Something is wrong with that picture.  I was thinking of applying as an MT, but now thinking maybe I should just apply as a kitchen aide.  I ...

Salaries

I found out today that a local community pays teenagers $11 an hours for temporary summer jobs.  Are you making $11 an hour?  Does an MT with 20 years experience deserve more than a teenager with a summer job?  I still work for MQ because it's just a few hours a week to supplement SS.  If I were younger, I would do anything and everything I could to get the heck out of here. ...

SALARIES OF CCMs
Apr 07, 2012

Just curious but how much money do the CCMs make?  I've never been able to find an answer to this question.  Also, do you have to have a certain number of years transcription experience to be a CCM?  I'm not interested in the position, just curious.  I've also never understood why sometimes communcation with them is bad.  Why do they go for days without sending out emails to the MTs sometimes?    ...

MT Salaries - Upping The Anty
Feb 28, 2011

I have been an MT for over 25 years - In 1982, I was making 10 cents a line. In 2011, I am making 10 cents a line, which doesn't even include Capital Letters! I have read many posting on this site complaining about lack of income....and what I've realized is WE have sold out our profession by being willing to not demand higher salaries; yes, we have competition from outsourcing companies around the world who are willing to work for peanuts, but with all the new HIPPA rules, etc., this ...

Do You Think That As The Economy Improves That Industry Wide Salaries Will Begin To Improve?
Sep 22, 2010

I know and accept the fact (albeit grudgingly) that ASR and offshoring are the wave of the future, but do you think that as the economy improves that things will cycle and what we do will once again become valued with the recognition of our value being reflected in higher salaries?  Or do you think that the unhappy reality is that regardless of the economy salaries will either remain stagnant or continue to trend downward? Thanks in advance for your input. ...

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR
Apr 10, 2012

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? I live in a rural area and there are advertisements for registered/accredited coders at medical facilities, but I'm afraid of spending all that time and money on schooling only to not be able to find a job. Any information/insight w ...

Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...

MT To Coding
Sep 27, 2010

I've been an MT for going on 8 years now, and I've been throwing around the idea of taking a coding class. I would really like to have something else to fall back on, as it seems that MT'ing is going more and more to VR. There's a local coding class that begins in January for $1700, but I wanted to get some feedback of current coders before signing up. Is the demand for coders still fairly high? Is it hard to find a job as a newbie, even with already having experience in the ...

Is Coding The Way To Go?!
Jan 19, 2011

I have almost 12 years experience as an MT (turn 30 in a month ACK!)  My mom has been telling me for a couple years now (since it started going downhill) that I should maybe think about coding as a career.  I guess she thinks I'd be good at it, but I have no idea.  I have just started my research but I thought I would kind of get some pros and cons about it see if anyone had advice or thoughts on anyone thinking about it.  I always feel like I'm too old to start som ...

What Do You (did You) Like Best About Your Coding Course?

I Keep Looking At Coding, Considering It But........
Feb 11, 2012

there's just ONE little thing that keeps me doubting the possibility of it being a long-term career: I keep seeing more and more ads every week for "at home coders".  Does this make you at least a little nervous?  It makes me a LOT nervous.  We all know that once MTs started working from home, the MT field went into a tailspin, pay-wise, because "work-at-home" seems to translate into "work-in-India", instead.  Also I see some ads for MTSOs that also offer coding.  ...

Coding Vs MT, What To Do....
May 10, 2012

I am generally pretty good at making my own decisions; however, I need advice on what to do in this situation. I am currently an MT making $55,000-$60,000 year. The last few years MT work slowed down due to VR/EMR and it was harder and harder to replace lost accounts. While I was looking for another client/MTSO to fill the gap last year, I took a college course for coding and passed the CPC thinking I would have a back-up plan if needed; however, I found more MT work shortly after passing the C ...

How Did You Get Your First Coding Job?
