Ugh!!! Recent company that has been mentioned on here - oldster MT

Posted: Oct 17, 2012

There have been recent posts on here regarding a company who wants you to have a certain version of software installed before you can work for this company.  I had several discussions with said MTSO, who stated that he would pay for it and take it out in increments from my paycheck.  Unlike other MTSOs, who may send via the internet and snail mail, they send paperwork via snail mail.  I called earlier in the week to see if it had been recieved  "no, and we will call you back when it has been received," but also, "we are working on a new platform and not sure when it will be up and running."  I'm sorry, but, I am not independently wealthy.  I have been on UE and the paltry amount that I get goes for food, expenses, etc. , I cannot afford the cost of the software  -- I also cannot live on "promises" and that it will be next week or maybe the week after because "promises" do not pay the bills.  My vent is the fact that they advertised knowing they were going to another platform.  Why advertise when the platform is not in place and expect MTs to pay for a software upgrade as well with again, promises to reimburse you or pay for it.

I have heard much advice here warning do not pay to work for a company! No reputable company is going to want money from you. None.

This is a company who is doing an upgrade of their software. Apparently, in order to work for them, you have to have Windows 7 Professional. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and have had no problems with platforms etc. I cannot afford to pay for the upgrade being on UE -- as many of us cannot pay for it (around $220 for upgrade and install) sorry, but I have bills to pay, food to buy etc., and that cost is astronomical. Most of us cannot afford that amount of money.

If this is Turn Around Time transcription I think the advice given here was to avoid them because of bad experiences with the owner. I had applied and didn't pursue it based on what I had read. They promised you a job and now they don't have one, I'd say cut your losses and keep looking, it is not too late.

Legally, you are supposed to use Windows Professional at work - just me

Home version is for just that. The home. Professional version is just what it sounds like. The softwoare licensing states this very clear, as does the Microsoft website.

Things might look OK on your end, but on the receiving end, it does not always support certain formatting for one as well as the ethical issues for using it commercially. As a transcriptionist, you are using this commercially, and Microsoft thereby wants their money.
Your post regarding the use of Windows 7 Professional - OP

I have never heard of this either from Microsoft or from the company that I worked for when I purchased this computer last year. At the time that I purchased my computer, I was on a limited budget and most of them came with Windows 7 Home Premium. I asked the company technician about this and he stated there would be no problem with using that version. I have since worked for other companies as well, using different platforms and only ran into a problem twice with installing the software; one instance involved Emdat and another involved the software that the company used being a older version of software and even though they stated it would work with Windows 7, I had problems with it.

I ended up having major problems with my computer and having to have Windows 7 reinstalled. Because of the problems and the fact that it took over a week, Microsoft was gracious enough to install Windows 7 Professional at no charge.

You are sadly misinformed regarding the use of Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Profeessional. I called Microsoft because I was curious after what you had posted. Microsoft does NOT monitor your software usage and could basically care less if you are using a "Home edition" of their product for work. The ONLY difference between the "Home edition and the Professional edition" is the fact that with the Professional edition of Windows you can run programs that were designed for XP. Because of the hassles that I went through with my computer, I had a Microsoft technician install the Professional version for nothing last night.
READ THE SOFTWARE LICENSE - anon

It strictly states not to use it for commercial use. Transcription is commercial use. Period. I too spoke with Microsoft, not to mention being able to read. Are you a professional medical transcriptionist being paid for your services or are you a student? When I purchased the student version years and years ago, I even had to provide my college paperwork prior to purchasing it. When formatting did not hold using the Home Edition on the clients end (when my other computers were being repaired), I was contacted by several clients regarding the format mess. You will also not receive support unless you have Professional version.
I think you are confusing Windows 7 with Word - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
You are talking about looking at the license and whether it is a student edition or not. My original post was referring to Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. These come preinstalled on the computer. You also refer to "different versions messing up formatting," again, I think you are mistaking Word for the operating system. Believe me, I have learned a lot about computers and software in my life time, so please try to get your facts straight.
My facts are right.. Professional means commercial use, as in getting paid - just me
[ In Reply To ..]
What part of Professional do you not understand? Professional is when you use it for commercial use, as in getting paid. Home Edition does not mean working from home, which states that on the license. I have a degree in computer science as well as the ability to read and understand license rights. That is unless you work for free.

Your declaration really bothered me.

So, I took the time to read BOTH software licenses for BOTH Windows 7 Home and Professional versions.

If you'd like to share where you found the part that states: If you use it for a business you must use the professional version, I'd love to see it.

Sounds like another parasite company who wants to built up staff before getting contracts. - Morgan

My experience was 3-T hired me and then backed by starting date by a month because they had 3 hires ahead of me. Most people cannot wait while they dilly-dally around training others, fixing their platform etc.

Are Names Mentioned On MT Test To Get A Job For Real?
Dec 07, 2010

I took a test the other day to apply for an MT job and the doctor loud and clear gave the patient's name. The dictation was a consult. If that was real information, I do not want to go there for help.   ...

Looking For A Company With No ASR And All USA

I have over 30 years in this field and it seems that a lot of companies are either cutting the MT's pay to edit on ASR and/or are offshoring work out to India, Pakistan, Philippines, etc.  I don't believe in sending our jobs overseas, and I've also given ASR at whirl (a long whirl lol) and I still couldn't increase my lines per hour to compensate for the cut in pay that I had to take by doing ASR.  So what I'm looking for is a company that does not do ASR, do ...
