What do you look for in a company? - Typin_away

I will begin my job search in a few short months after graduating from M-Tec. Reading the company board has been an experience with all the negativity, but everyone has different experiences with a company and entitled to their opinion.

My question is what do people look for in a company in the current market? How do you know if a company is a good fit for you? What would you consider a "red-flag" that would make you turn away from a company?

No this isn't a school assignment or anything like that. I am starting to make a list of potential companies I would like to apply to and a list of companies that I want to stay away from.

Do you want to be an employee or an independent contractor?
Are you looking for straight transcription or VR editing?
Do you like a lot of feedback or do you like to be left alone?
Do you want a small company or a large company?
Do you want to be on one account (and possibly run out of work) or have multiple accounts (with possibly many different expectations and formats).
Do you want a flexible schedule, day shift, evening shift, shift differentials for working weekends, holidays, do you need benifits, PTO?

Everyone has different things they need. I personally like VR editing with eScription, I like a flexible schedule and am willing to take a lower line rate in order to get it, I like evenings because my husband works during the day, I like smaller companies where people know my name and what account I am on without explaining it to them every day, I don't need benifits, I like to be left alone to work and not get constant e-mails, etc, etc. But your situation might be different...

That gave me some great things to think about! What I was more looking for was people's opinions, for example, I would not work for less than X cpl on transcription as an employee/IC, I would not work for a company that has offices in India, etc.

How do you know if a company is willing to give you more than one account before you are hired, so you know the option is there, and you will not run out of work?

How do you research a company (besides MT Stars company board) to make sure they are a good company to work for?

Sometimes a newbie right out of school can't be choosy about what the pay they will accept. Not many companies will hire a person with no experience, so my pay has nothing to do with your pay (BTW - I won't work for less than 8/4, but I am making more than that now).

Also, you can ask during your interview what they do with work volumes, whether or not they will assign you more accounts or expect you to 'check back later' (BS in my opinion).

Unfortunatley, there are few ways to make sure a national company is a "good" company. I chose mine because my doctor had told me a long time ago they were looking for an MT, and when I came back later needing a job they said they had outsourced to this specific company because they had a good reputation and did good work and they were very happy for them. That was good enough for me, so I submitted an application and got a job.

Sometimes you just have to cross your fingers and do the best you can, and if you don't like, it keep applying and interviewing until you find something that works for you. Once you get 3-5 years experience you will have many more options open up.

Great information. I know my pay and options will be limited, possibly very limited starting out. I was just trying to get a feel for the MT world in general with no expectations that would be what I would make. (If that makes sense?)

It seems to me that the MT work climate is changing, and possibility the expectations of both the employee and the employer is as well.

We are a pretty big company, and we think we know what transcriptionists want, but it doesn't hurt to ask. There are a lot of top people in our industry that are finding themselves without jobs, often without notice, both managers and transcriptionists. I have over 30 years in this field and it seems that a lot of companies are either cutting the MT's pay to edit on ASR and/or are offshoring work out to India, Pakistan, Philippines, etc. I don't believe in sending our jobs overseas, and I've also given ASR at whirl (a long whirl lol) and I still couldn't increase my lines per hour to compensate for the cut in pay that I had to take by doing ASR. The company I work for hired me as full time 1000 lines with benefits. 3 months later they changed their policies to 1200 lines anything under no benefits. Also we can not work over 40 hours. How can they pay me by line but then tell me how many hours I can work? I don't work hourly. Well, it seems as if the outsource bug has hit again. I don't know how my hospital transcription department managed to stay intact for so many years but we are officially being given the boot in 2 weeks. It is no different than our company. We need better working conditions and raises. Found out there are many MTs in this company and we all are not making the same pay. Some are even higher pay.
