Remember back in the old days, when - sadbuttrue

Posted: Dec 15, 2010

being an IC meant that YOU told the company when YOU wanted to work, or were available to work???  I wonder what happened to those days???  I always thought that if companies were going to stick you to a set schedule and yell at you all the time you may as well have employee status and at least receive benefits?

I agree! - dont like IC

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked as an IC until I was told what my schedule had to be, then I figured someone else should deal with my taxes if I had to work a schedule.

IC status - sadbuttrue

Yes, but here is the thing...the company I just started working for does take out taxes if you ask them too, even though you are an IC, but they still pay the same rate per line as if you are employee status! Didnt IC's used to be paid more because they didnt have benefits and taxes taken out???

These positions only exist because MTs allow them to - Just say no

[ In Reply To ..]
If MTs would quit taking EMPLOYEE-CALLED-IC positions, then perhaps companies would get a clue.

If you are misclassified, then file with the IRS to have your status properly classified. Until then, you're complicit with the MTSO in breaking the rules.

Just say no - sadbuttrue

I would gladly say no to this job but I was unemployed for about a year and my unemployment benefits were exhausted. As for the IRS, I completed the paperwork to be considered an IC, the company says they deduct 30% for taxes as a courtesy to those of us who want them to.

It's not fair to blame MTs - sm

I worked for 2 places that demanded a schedule. I would tell them that I was online during certain rough hours but, until they paid me as an employee, I wouldn't follow a set schedule. Had to quit both jobs because of all their issues, and I did file a complaint against one of them with the IRS, but nothing came of it.

Besides, it's either take what you're offered or they'll just find someone in another country to do a poor job for 2 cents a line. You're asking people to go without pay to stand for a principle, which is good on paper, but impossible in reality.

Principles - Just say no

[ In Reply To ..]
If enough MTs refused to be misclassified, it would change. There are jobs where as an IC you don't have to work a schedule provided by the company and other situations where you're really an employee.

I don't think MTs have the right to complain about working for companies who shaft them when they CHOOSE to work for these companies, no one twists their arm. And yes, I realize people need to work but MT isn't the only gig in town and the companies who exploit MTs aren't either.

When you do work as a true IC in a pool - you start to understand

[ In Reply To ..]
why a lot of companies have had to go to schedules. Who knows when and if anyone is going to work. I'm only an MT. I can only imagine what it is like for a manager.

What happened is that supply exceeds demand. - Pragmatist

This IS our free enterprise system running free. Don't like it, start pushing for more government controls and protections. Won't do that? Then assume your position and learn to smile.

These bad days are nothing like the ones before the Progressive Era of the early 1900s. Back then, when business instructed government troops to gun down employees rioting over abuse and exploitation, the troops did just that.

I am an IC and that is exactly what I do. I think I am one - of the few. NM

I'm lucky in that I have a true IC job right now - sm

I work when I want, as long as I want, no one asks questions. As someone else already said, you get some days when there is a ton of work because no one else showed up -- and of course on the last 2 days before payday, good luck getting ANY jobs. It seems like half the MTs forget they even work for this company until they realize they want a good paycheck.

Do You Remember The Days When ......

You actually looked forward to getting the PA instead of the doctor because they were so much easier to hear, understand, etc., except for the fact that most of them have no clue when it comes to pronouncing medications and feel that it is above them to spell the medication out.  In my case it seems that the roles have flipped nowadays, I absolutely hate seeing the PA coming up and would rather do the doctor any day of the week!!     ...

I Remember The Days When...
Nov 26, 2011

Fresh out of a local vocational school for MT back in 1993,  I met with an established local MT, who allowed me to do a little of her work (with pay) to see how I would do because she wanted someone to take over on Fridays so she could have that day off.  Within a few months, she partnered with another transcriptionist in town for a separate account and gave me all the work from group that she was doing!  It was 5 docs and 2 NPs.  I did the work at her house on her computer. ...

MT Week - Remember The Good Ol' Days?
May 25, 2013

I remember looking forward to MT Week with my old favorite employers YOG and Encompass.  I'd go to the mailbox and actually get little gifts from them. Imagine that! With YOG I actually got more than one!  I still have that letter opener that is the bomb! No sarcasm. I really liked that. Little things mean a lot. Much better than a lecture from the rich powers that be, or an "opportunity" to maybe, just maybe, win a prize after gushing about how great your job has b ...

Remember Back In The Day....
Jan 23, 2014

when you could make a good living by being an MT? What's up with these companies over-hiring and having us sit for hours on end with no work? Why hire so many if you don't need them? I finally quit and will never do MT work again because after going to VR, I sat here for 11 hours on average each day either waiting for work or doing very little work and my last check for an entire month was $240. After 17 years of this work and working for a company that I loved until they sold out ...

Way Back In The Old Days
Jan 28, 2015

You know way back when I first started with this company when it was Medquist, the managers actually cared and it seemed like a well organized and great company to work for.  They listened to your complaints, understood what you meant, they worked around YOUR schedule, you flexed when you could and still got your work done in a timely manner with minimal if any errors, and you got all your hours in.  You were encouraged and offered help when you needed it without being made to feel lik ...

Back To Work After Back Surgery
Aug 23, 2012

Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much? The last company I tried had a "pop-up" box that appeared on my screen if you were up longer than 10 min ...

Remember When
Apr 23, 2010

Remember when – you were proud to be an MT – proud of the work you did and the physicians said thank you when you did a good job?   How about the bumper sticker years ago from AHDI (AAMT)  that they handed out at one of the conferences that read – MDs need MTs.   After 35 years in this profession, I call it quits.   All of us really just need a "thank you" from time to time to feel appreciated.     I have worked at ho ...

Remember when we used to get that newsletter in the mail?  I found some today as I was packing my stuff.  Remember when they used to pat us on the back now and then? (usually right before they made a change that was a major hassle, though--and NEVER a pay increase, absolutely unheard of) Now they just hang us out to dry and we have to fend for ourselves. Wonder if they even notice we are dropping like flies. We never hear anything from management unless it's that they are i ...

Can't Even Remember
Jan 11, 2012

You know the weird thing is that even after just 3 years, I cannot even remember the name of the last 2 companies I worked for - I was an independent contractor for the first 15 years and had my own accounts. That's pretty sad when you can't even remember a past employer (or maybe it isn't because you've blocked them from your memory because of the poor pay and constant outsourcing and waiting for them to find you more work). Now that I do remember. If anyone knows who I w ...
