Regarding poster who said "And you contribute to the spiraling wages." - From Mercedes post below.

Posted: Nov 09, 2014

I realize you don't understand why some of us go with companies offering extremely low wages.  Let me try to enlighten you (at least in my case).

1.  I am 68 and physically disabled and cannot work outside my home.  I am on SS, but there is no way I can live on that alone.

2.  I have two specialties in MT tht I can work on comfortably and Mercedes has the both.

3.  To transfer from one company to another and not have to be trained on the accounts/platform (BayScribe) was definitely a blessing.

4.  There is plenty of work.

You give me a company that I can have all four, and I will gladly apply.  I am too old to be trying a new specialty or platform.  My DH works hard for a living and I need to have SOMETHING that makes me feel like I am contributing at least a tiny bit to the household income.

Can we get an AMEN here?!!! Good post. - nm

spiraling wages - anonie

I totally agree with you. I too am on SS and need this to supplement that. I have no husband and so it helps a lot. Of course, I wish I didn't have to work so hard to get a decent wage though. I hate huge pay cuts, but at least I have a job. If it gets worse though, I may just have to give up. I do not at my age want to go to a new company to test and be told I am not qualified after being an MT for 27 years. Insulting to say the least.

I have never had any bad review in my entire career because I truly want to produce a clear and accurate transcription of a medical record.

Good luck to you the original poster and also the one who said Amen. Younger people don't understand this.

I do feel for MTs whose sole responsibility for families are having difficult times and I wish things could be better for all of us.

While I understand your plight, if you do not investigate other companies sm - Another side of the coin

and simply take what is there at a ghastly low wage, you are not giving yourself enough credit or opportunity, and yes, you contribute to the wages going down. Each person that takes that kind of wage shows the other companies that they, too, can begin lowering their wages as well. I am not a "youngster." I am in my 50s and I have been an MT for a very long time. Obviously, my opinion does not matter as everyone will continue as they will, but there has to be a point that you draw a line in the sand and say "I'm worth more than that." Post your resume -- that's how I got my 2 highest paying jobs. They called me. I understand that Bayscribe is an easy platform and I love it myself, but I type in Word on my other job and that is pretty easy as well. I do wish you luck. Perhaps I am so testy about this because I had planned to work long past retirement age, but at the rate that wages are going down, by the time I'm 66 they will probably be asking MTs to pay them.

And did I say.......... - OP

I'm not young enough or able enough to "draw a line in the sand" nor do I really WANT to. Some of us are just happy to have something to do.

I don't want to "work in Word." I have the Bayscribe expander and none other. I don't want to spend money on another expander or take the time to "train" another expander.

What you don't understand is ....... I LOVE TRANSCRIPTION and want to continue doing it. No, I won't "pay them" to do it, but at my age I'd do it free.

Those of you just happy to do what you do and accepting anything sm - JMO

really are part of what drives down wages, but I will post no more. I at least tried to see your side of things, but you refuse to see mine. When I started at OTI, they paid 9 cpl, then ended up at 7-1/2 cpl. They did it because they could. I personally hope that at 68 I am still ready and willing to learn -- I love learning new things -- but that is me, not you. You are content in your situation, and that is fine and obviously not my concern, but as long as people accept lower and lower wages, the wages will continue to plummet.

To EHR Poster Below
Feb 24, 2012

I read the link.  The electronic medical record STILL is not the problem (my account with Q right now has EHR and I TRANSCRIBE the reports).  The problem according to the article is that the Clinicians are inputting the data -- be it typing it in or point and click or speech rec --- but that information STILL has to be put into that record somehow.  They are choosing to do it themselves and not pay transcriptionists, but the Electronic Medical Record only means that it is totally ...

technology poor sound quality of dictation should be a thing of the past; however, that is now my #1 problem.  I have put a notation in the QA notes several times lately of the poor audio quality.  I think dictating on a speaker phone or cell phone (I don't care where --- office, home, bathroom, ballgames, convertibles, motorcycles, airplanes, or outer space) should be MT-outlawed and if a dictator does it, the report should be trashed and he should have to dictate it over (y ...

To The Poster Below Regarding Audits
Jan 09, 2012

I am NOT going to read all those posts, but I just wanted to let you know that you are lucky you only get audited once a month.  I get audited DAILY, at least once a day.  Today I got audited twice, one 100% the other 99.75%.  If I can remember correctly, I got dinged for typing something like "Aorta was tortuous" instead of "The aorta was tortuous".  It was for an account that has a multitude of dictators - I swear there is a new one every day and no two on a consistent basi ...

Disagree With Poster Below
Dec 02, 2013

who said it makes no difference to MM's bottom line if they put us on 100% QA because it usually is not permanent.  Even if it is just for a month or two and they are lowering our salaries by half or more, multiply that by the number of hours worked and by the number of MTs on 100% QA.  They can lower their costs by many thousands per month - at least enough to throw themselves a huge party. ...

You say good management-this company has a rep for this kind of stuff.  Do you think it is good management when accounts run out of work daily because they are only overflow (almost all accounts with this company are overflow) and are overstaffed to stay in TAT-I had 5 accounts and still didn't have enough work?  Do you like pulling teeth to get work and/or answers because there is only 1 (ONE) person dishing out work who has the persona ...

To The Poster Below Who Said Unions Can't Stop
Aug 26, 2010

I agree with that wholeheartedly.  But unions CAN force fair compensation for the skill and experience with the new technology.  I have never understood the concept that MTs should be paid half of what they normally get paid for straight typing when doing VR editing.  When doctors learned how to use da Vinci, endoscopic procedures, etc., did they get paid less because their new equipment helped them to be more proficient.  Do doctors get paid less for EMR because a lot of ti ...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I have had enough of the lack of work ethic in the transcription industry from the doctors and their myriad ways of making our life miserable and unprofitable. What Happened To Poster Busy MT'ing?

I remember she worked at Medquist and was on here a lot offering advice through all the changes. She shared how she worked through the first pay cuts in 2005 or around that time by working just three and a half days a week (lots of hours) and earning the highest production bonus possible. I believe she was also in school getting her MD? She was very informative, and wondered if anyone has heard from her, if she's here, still working at M-Modal or if she got her degree? ...

I want to congratulate everyone who posts on this site telling it like it is about the way these MT companies are destroying what once was a profession where you could make a decent living and actually enjoyed your job. I've been doing this for 30 years and I am still hanging on because I do not know what else to do at my age. I can barely pay my bills with what they are paying me and I am working full time. Wages?
Oct 31, 2013

I've taken the tests and have been offered a job with Nuance but want to know if the wage offered was the standard wage for Nuance.  I was offered 8 cpl for straight trasncription and 4 cpl for editing.  This would be for clinics only.  I've heard acute care paid more, but I've only ever had clinic experience.  Do they ever offer raises?  They mentioned a bonus program, and I've seen notes on here about people saying they have had problems getting th ...

AP - Wages
Jun 04, 2015

How many are aware of the wage disparity between different accounts (they don't find it necessary to tell us such a silly detail as the hourly wage, you have to look it up online).  With the new accounts, some pay quite low (as low as MB that no one wants to work on) and it may be a shock for those working on those accounts when they get their paychecks! Is it right of them to ask/require us to help out?  My feeling is  it is costing me to work on those accounts, as it lowers ...

Where Your Lost MQ Wages Are Going

Fair Wages
Feb 18, 2011

I think a fair wage should be in relation to the economy, that which allows you to meet your baseline financial needs without having to work a second job or long hours.  I worked for a service back in the early 80s for 6.5 cents per line.  Today, nearly 30 years later, they're offering 7.5 cents per line, yet costs are sky-high.   It's pathetic.  It's sweatshop third world.  It's true, we're stuck with the way things are, but ...

Wages And Compensation
Aug 07, 2014

I came into this field long after the precedent was set on pay.  I knew coming into this that the average wage ran from 6 cpl to 10 cpl, with most jobs hovering around 7 to 8 cpl.  What I didn't account for was that in more than 10 or 15 years, we'd still be at that rate.  Not only has our wage not gone up in over a decade, even with cost of living increases, but that when they came out with speech recognition, someone thought, "Well, it's doing half the work, so y ...

Question About Garnishment Of Wages
Nov 10, 2009

I just recently found out that my wages are being garnished.  I knew it was coming and I decided maybe it wasn't a bad idea in order to pay back this debt.  The problem is they are taking 20% of my disposable income which is a considerable amount!  I am a single mom with two kids and 20% is simply too much and doesn't leave us much to live on.  I did my research and found that in the state of Missouri if you are head of household and the only income, a creditor can ...
