Landmark Transcription - very disappointed - Bailey

Was hired by this company for a large hospital new account. Owner said she was excited about hiring 40 MTs. There has never been more than a few jobs per day. It is definitely overflor and there is not a lot of that. Not enough work for even part time. Very vague about any further work. Am very disappointed. Owner does not have a grip on reality.

This is the reason I am afraid to go to work there. I have been warned about the constant running out of work by several other people as well. I think I am going to pass on this one, too many people saying the same thing. I have a chance for another job with another company; think I will go that way instead. Thanks for your input.

What I would like to know is this: WHY, when these companies are interviewing us, do they tell us they have tons of work, they are hiring 40 more people, they are bringing on more contracts all the time, and yet when people actually do go to work for them, they run out of work nearly every day. Can anyone explain how that works to me? What am I missing? How can any MT tell in advance that this is going to happen? Many (most?) of us have mortgages, families and children and are not working for a hobby or to pass the time of day. I am serious about my job and if I am hired thinking that there is full-time work, I wonder why there are so many days I run out......

Because companies want their work done in TAT so that THEY can make money. If you went for a job interview and they said, "Well, this is an overflow account. You may have work on one day, then possibly no work for several days after that, it is hit or miss, feast or famine." You would NOT likely accept the job and then who would make money for THEM?

That is what this industry has become. It has become commonplace to go to work for an employer and be placed on a large acute care urban hospital account only to find out that the workload in reality is sparse because there are at least two other transcription services PLUS in-house transcriptionists all transcribing reports for the same hospital. Of course, we never know how much of that is work is sent "over the pond" as they say, since many companies send work to India, Trinidad, and God knows where else for the ever shrinking TAT for their profit. I honestly hope there is longevity in this industry in the next several years for us "career" MTs who do not want to leave the profession, i.e., that companies make an effort to bring more work back into the U.S. permanently. It has definitely become a crowded profession in recent years, and honesty and integrity with some companies disappeared some time ago.

Whatyou say makes sense. One of the things that attracted me to Landmark was that they do not offshore. However, if you are a guy with three kids and a mortgage, you gotta have a stable job. MQ used to be stable, now it is just NJA. I am too young to think of retiring yet. Maybe I will become a mechanic instead. Yes, I am serious.

If you are considering becoming a mechanic instead of the hassles of this profession, I say go for it. Anymore you have to rely on your instincts. I have been balancing two jobs for some time now just to make ends meet because if I am employed "full-time" by a company there is always the issue of running out of work, so I am thankful to have a subsidized income. I started working from home a little over 6 years ago and was hired by EDix and within a year it was bought out by Spheris. Things were definitely different back then, and there was plenty of work available. Within just a couple of years all of that wonderful work went overseas, many MTs left Spheris, and I panicked because I was not familiar with the list of national transcription services or whether they were trustworthy. This profession has changed so much in 6 years that I would never encourage anyone to enter it. I have been at this for 22 years and I have concerns about its longevity. Good luck to you.

I started with Edix/spheris 10 years ago before the bottem fell out and everything went overseas. I agree, this profession is on a down hill slide and am going to school to get out as soon as possible. I have even gone to my college - who offer a med trans program - and told them that they definately need to re-evaluate because of right now, there is no future in transcribing and it is not fair to take these people money and that if they insisted on keeping the program they needed to throw in some editing classes. They laughed at me, maybe they need to read this board!

I find it interesting that this posted at all, as when I was there starting part-time to consider full-time, supposedly my acct was "terminated" without notice. Now they suddenly have work? I don't know....kind of puts the gut on alert IMO. Just my 2 cents. ...

I think I may have made a HUGE error. After not reading and researching enough on site here I sent Landmark Transcription my resume. It wasn't until it was sent I discovered some of the messages from last year saying they are always out of work !! Just what I or any of us would need - sign on with a company who has no work. I left Soft Script because of that. Good grief, I wish I had seen all the feedback earlier. Live and learn I guess. ...

Anyone else get an e-mail this morning that as of April 1, they have lost a big acct. and we will have no work ? Was basically told we could be put on a waiting list for other upcoming accounts, other platform. Landmark has been great for the most part until this recent notification of changes in our pay periods back to bimonthly. Is anyone else just a little upset that we only get one week's pay for the first check of Dec. instead of usual 2? We still only get the same check end of month for 1-15th. Some of us have bills & will only get half the check. I was told that no one else was too bothered by this. Guess I'm the only one who actually works for my payc ...

Hi, all- I am a transcriptionist (employee) at our local hospital and we were all recently told that Landmark was taking over our transcription department.
