Has Anyone Experienced... - anon

Posted: Apr 12, 2010

I was wondering if anyone has expereinced having applied to an advertisement for a transcription job with any particular MTSO, receiving an "invitation to test" at around midnight, and then attempting to take the test.  What I found when attempting to take the "transcription test", was an hour and a half of written test, not a voice file transcription test, with very detailed questions.  I spent an hour and a half taking this test and checking every answer on the internet, whether I thought I knew the answer or not, and having every question right, per the definitions provided on the internet, and then being told at the very end of the hour and a half written test, that I failed to meet their minimum requirements, and to seek further education at Career Step, with a link to that school.  When asking them for a copy of the questions I failed to "meet minimum requirements on" I was told that it could not be provided to me.  It was their "property," and to seek further education at Career Step.

somehow this feels like a scam to me, with putting a fraudulent advertisement for employment on the internet, giving an hour and a half written test, telling the applicant that the did not meet minimum requirements and to go to a particular school for further education.  I know I did not fail that test, and being told that I could not have a copy of the questions that I answered incorrectly adds to the thought of it being a scam even more so.

Has anyone else experienced this type of thing??

Who did you test with? Reputable and known company? - MTopinion

If you have heard of or are familiar with whom you tested with, it's probable legit, but if you have not heard of them, they likely are trying to be sneaky and have to enroll in Career Step so possibly have a connection to that program. Just a guess. I did a test like that recently but never heard back and spent a long time answering questions I had never heard of so I wonder if it is the same company. I cannot even remember who they are as I have applied for so many jobs lately and most of them you never hear back so I just move on.

I know the name who I tested with, but quite honestly had not heard of them prior to this. I did an archive search here, as well, and found nothing. I could give the name, but would rather by email as opposed to on here. I just thought it was odd, particularly since they would not tell me which questions I supposedly answered incorrectly.

I have questioned some of the testing as well, for more than one company. On one of the written tests I checked every answer against my reference materials and was told I did not pass. On a recent transcription test for a different company I know I did well only to be told I did not pass and to try again in 6 months. I have 35 years experience as an MT and I know what I am doing. They all seem to have different standards for hiring, I don't know how they decide who passes/fails. It's difficult to know how to prepare for re-testing if you don't know what you did wrong.

That's what I thought, as well. It still felt like an attempt to have people enroll in Career Step, and I thought they may be affiliated since they specifically mentioned only that name and supplied the link. oh well, live and learn. thanks for your experiences, as well.

Ooooooo.... that sounds like quite the "Transcription - School Scam", to me! -nm

I tested with Breitner a couple of weeks ago and - No longer a Breitner wanna me

[ In Reply To ..]
they recommended I apply to Career Step as I had failed. As I have 30 years experience I wondered how I blundered so as I did look up many of the questions as did you as it was not timed and I want out of my current job and wanted it to be perfect. Big waste of time. Please let us know if it is other than Breitner so that we can avoid the faux hiring practices they are using.

No, it was not Breitner - anon

This place also has a web site and when I went to view it, under careers, it has a direct link to Career Step, as well, with no indication whatsoever that they are actually hiring for anything. You would think if they were actually hiring, they would have a position included in their "Career" area. Since you are all so curious now, it is TransPortal. ever hear of them??? I also want to quit my present position, but this was a total waste of my time. I could have been typing, no matter how much I dislike my present employer, and made some money rather than getting my hopes up only to be told to enroll in Career Step for more education. Lame!

Thank you for naming them. There's no point in - No longer Breitner wanna be

applying at a place that really has no plans to hire you. I don't know why they think that MTs who test for them would enroll in Career Step even if we had failed miserably. I don't know my score to know how I did.

That's just weird, isn't it? Why would they think a working MT would go through Career Step?
I can only venture a guess.. - anon

One reason I can think of as to why they think a working MT would enroll is Career Step is because the transcription industry is taking a downward turn, and probably the transcription schools, as well. Perhaps they think that by attacking the self esteem of one who is already in this field, they can make them think that further education in transcription would give them a better shot at employment. Boy, are they wrong. It only served to make me angry, and I would never consider either them for employment in the future, or Career Step either, for using such dirty tactics to bolster their enrollment. We need jobs, not more schooling that will serve nothing in the future for us already in the MT field, except to take more of our already empty pockets.

Transportal is a fantastic company to work for. The recruiter would not waste anyone's time any more than she'd want her own wasted.

They are a tough company in that they DO expect TOP MTs to know their stuff and know it well and be willing to do what they say they can and will.

If you failed the test, there had to be a reason. They are certainly not recruiting for Career Step, I can assure you.

I've been with them for 3 years and can tell you they are fair and among the services out there, better than most.

the links to Career Step at their site give the company name as the referring party, so I'm sure they get a referral kickback of some kind.

That said, however, I also didn't see anything that made me think there was anything untoward or funny going on. There's always the possibility that the testing (which they don't score, Career Step does, if they use their testing engines as many sites do) and scoring got mucked up somehow.

It's standard policy to not give out test answers, so there's nothing funny in that.

One other possibility, though perhaps remote, is that those who are sure they got nothing wrong on the test actually did and they've overestimated their knowledge. (I know, I know ... just pointing it out as a possibility, though unlikely ... I think it's more likely something happened in the scoring to skew things and give false fails, as, again, I don't see anything hinky about the site at all.)

I thought it just might be the difference in what each of them considers to be a passing grade as I have passed transcription tests at some of the other companies. For example, one place might consider 90% to be a passing grade, one might consider 98% to be passing. Some of the tests are graded by humans who might be able to differentiate major errors from small errors, some might be graded electronically. As I said before, there does not seem to be much consistency in the testing and grading.

This just isn't right. If they have an affiliation with some school, they need to come right out and say it (as Buffalo Springfield used to sing). This is nonsense and unethical. I wish there were some way for you to nail them.

[ In Reply To ..]
especially if they are having this "school" grade the tests for them, as one other poster stated. If the school is testing their potential employees, there is more of an affiliation there than there should be. This poster also "suggested" that it was the testee's error and not the test itself. As I had stated earlier, I checked every question on the internet first to be absolutely sure it was right, as I was really interested in the so called position they were offering, even though it paid less than what I am making now. I have been doing this for quite some time myself and though I am not perfect, spelling and grammar are my forte. Even though I felt I knew the answers, I checked anyway just to be sure. I know that I passed that test, and it should not be being graded by the very school they are associated with. If they will not share what answers I supposedly got wrong, then there is no way for anyone to "prove" it was intentional on their part. There is no way to "nail" them, unfortunately.

Breitner has no jobs anyway, and they don't pay minimum wage either.... - JUST SIT AND WAIT, LITTLE WORKER BEE...NM

Have you called your Attorney General of your state? I think Career Step and its associates needs to be called out on this. And no, this is by no means the first time I have heard of this. It is fraud, pure and simple. MTs will continue to be exploited until they stand up for themselves. Report them!

I also took the test and did basically the same thing, researching all the answers. When I failed and was referred to the career step program, I immediatly knew it was just to get some money out of me. It also took me about an hour and a half. I also was going to take another test but felt it was going to be the same things so I decided not to take it. I think more of these types of test are going to be on the net.

I am sorry for your experience... - anon

To VERY Experienced MTs
Feb 21, 2012

I have about 25 years in MT, owning a MTS and filling other roles in the field as well. Frequently on this board I read the frustrated posts from those with 20 to 30 years of experience who have submitted resumes/applications but do not hear back from the hiring company.  A couple of times I have suggested that OVERQUALIFICATION may explain the lack of call back.  Both times I was personally verbally attacked on this board, with the notion called "ridiculous" and "absurd." ...

Which Course For Experienced Nurse
Aug 11, 2010

I am looking into MT programs and wondering about one which advertises that it is geared to nurses: MT@Home Medical Transcription. It costs significantly less than the three programs which I see referenced quite a bit  -Andrews, M-Tec and Career Step, but it seems like these programs involve so much material that I already know. Years ago I did transcription for nurses, I've worked in hopitals/home and office environments as a nurse (also years ago) and I worked in pharmaceutical sales ...

Experienced MTs; Paid By The Line Or By The Audio Hour?
Jun 11, 2013

I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour.  If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour?  What I'm currently being offered per audio hour comes out to less than what I was paid per line at my previous job, but the reports are easier to understand so it may be worth it.  It is basically both ...
