As far as I know, it is legal to ask about your veteran status, because some companies get benefits when hiring veterans. I think that Native American status might also be included in that category, but I don't think I've ever seen it asked. Only religious institutions can ask about religious affiliation.

Other than that, age/race/sex/heritage/religion exceptions to the BFOQ (Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications) are very few and far between.
