I was laid off yesterday. - sleepymt Posted: Mar 12th, 2020 - 12:23 am
I got the following: "You're a highly respected part of the team and by this company." (No, they don't even know I exist.) "This was a business decision. Your services will no longer be required. Your position has been terminated effective immediately."
Severance package, PTO, sick day stuff: Yes.
Email from UPS regarding return labels for computer: Yes. EXCEPT if I want them to pick it up, it'll cost $10. That doesn't sound like much but I'm disabled (no SSI, that's not an option), I have little savings and now I'm losing my medical insurance at the end of the month. Every little cent counts. So, I'm hauling that crap out tomorrow. Of the labels provided, one label is for 20 pounds, the other for 13 pounds. The boxes/equipment weigh more than that. I will likely be paying to send this back anyway. Not cool.
Even though I feared this was coming since they have been doing mass firings, it was still a shock. I feel in shock. I do not feel liberated or well.
For me, this job was independence and to prove I could do something and be paid for it, that I wasn't a waste just because I was disabled. I need to work at home right now. And, right now, I'm having a hell of a time finding anything.
It's always nice to hear that people do so well once they've left or been fired from here. I'm happy for them. But there are some of us in a situation where being laid off from here is not "freedom." It's terrifying.
Good luck. I'll check back from time to time. I hope they get the board updated to 2020.
Take care all.
