Question on style plz :) - Kitty

I have been told that I should place a comma after a doc's name when using it in a sentence such as, "Steven Smith, M.D., saw the patient on Friday."  

 

Is that correct?  Does everyone do that?  I cannot rememeber doing that in the past.
