THE POSITION: We are looking for a candidate with a good ear and fast fingers to fill our opening as a medical transcriptionist in the medical records department. Every day brings a different set of challenges in this quick-paced behind-the-scenes area of health care, and the right person should be able to work quickly and accurately in this supporting role by maintaining the highest quality medical records for the care and privacy of the public we serve. Under general supervision, a Medical Transcriptionist transcribes reports and records dictated by physicians and other health professionals involving a wide variety of difficult medical terminology such as x-ray and surgical reports, patient histories, physical examinations, consultations, discharge summaries, pathology tissue reports, Emergency Room dictation, cardiopulmonary reports, and special notes.

LOCATION: Austin, TX (this is not a remote position)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Transcribe medical reports, summaries, office visit notes and other medical documents from recorded messages from health care providers

  • Provide online copies of transcribed document to physicians or other providers for review and signature, making corrections or changes as noted

  • Be familiar with proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure as well as medical jargon and abbreviations for accuracy

  • Prepare correspondence, summaries, research and other administrative reports not directly related to patient care in order to assist medical team

  • Work with transcription equipment that can include speech recognition equipment, word processing and computer software, medical references and other technologies

  • Maintain strict adherence to patient confidentiality according to provider standards and government regulations

  • Review transcription documents for quality assurance and precision to spot and correct any errors that could impact patient care and medical liability

  • Create templates and enter data into electronic health record (EHR) systems for updated record keeping and archives

  • Uses a variety of resource material to insure correct spelling, terminology and dates

  • Distributes completed work as appropriate and does related work as required

  • Proofread document for errors and grammar.

  • Transcribe dictated recordings made by physicians and healthcare professionals.

  • Listen to medical reports carefully using headset.

  • Pause recording using foot pedal.

  • Rewind or fast forward tape for clarity.

  • Comply with specific standards that apply to the style of medical records and to the legal and ethical requirements for keeping patient information confidential.

  • Utilize speech recognition technology.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 years of stenographic experience

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Proficiency with EHR, Microsoft Office and speech recognition software

  • Ability to type 90 WPM

  • Certification in medical transcription (CMT)

  • One year experience must be in transcribing medical records and reports requiring knowledge of medical terminology

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of medical terminology   

  • Ability to transcribe medical reports from a mechanical source with speed and accuracy

  • Knowledge of correct use of English, grammar and punctuation

  • Ability to adjust to various styles of dictation

  • The ability to understand and follow oral and written directions

  • Using medical transcription equipment, such as headsets and foot controls

  • Understanding medical terms and meanings

  • Knowing voice recognition software
