Taxes for self-employed - Curious

I have been a self-employed MT now for going on 2 years (before was employed) and got taken for mucho money by IRS for taxes last year because of it. What are the items you self-employed MTs take off for working at home? Is there a resource besides the IRS for this information? I know I'm not taking what I could be. Any info will help. Thanks.
