If you are near to retirement and do not want - to work part time as a babysitter Posted: Jul 26th, 2018 - 11:02 am In Reply to: Low wages - sickened
Then talk to me.
I am not the poster you responded to, and I can only speak to my situation, but I actually only turned to working at home when my husband got a job in a rural area and I realized that was probably my best, and almost only, shot at a decent job. It was a good solution about 12 years ago when the pay was still decent and there were employee jobs and even sign-on bonuses.
Now, the local hospital (which is for me a +1 hour each way commute by bus) I have applied for and not gotten 2 jobs, which to be honest would barely pay more than minimum and would be boring to boot, mostly data entry and making appointments.
I have just a few years until retirement, and basically I'm stuck here, unable to move to a place I might be able to get a decent job.
So yes, I am willing to work for less if I can earn enough to make up for the hourly rate. No, I would not work for less and get only 20 hours or so and still be waiting at my desk 12 hours a day like I was with Nuance (what seems like the situation with the contractors).
There are so many reasons this has happened in this industry, you cannot just blame it on people willing to take less (which let's face it we have all been guilty of at some point because we feel there is no choice but to, and now there are no employee jobs left basically).
I don't think it's the time for judgment. Those of us who want to spend the last few years of our working lives doing this job which we excel at and get to use our brains and get paid for our actual work (unusual for women) rather than being nice and smiling and buffering the boss, well, tell me how you feel when you get to my age and have limited choices.
