It is revenue based and tied to facility reimbursement. If records are over coded or incorrectly coded it can constitute fraud and the facility and/or the coders have to pay fines. There is also a boatload of government and state regulations that need to be followed. Insurance companies and Medicare will withhold payment for coding errors and if facilities and providers don’t get paid, none of us do either. I think your perception of coding is slapping some numbers on a diagnosis code and calling it good, it’s much more than that and language has nothing to do with it.
