That flexibility you speak of, unless one works IC, doesn't exist anymore. It is cutthroat out there.

I personally have to work full time, shift set by company, because I'm the primary wage earner and need the "benefits." When support for childcare fails me, and it has many, many times, my line counts suffer and then I get a call or an e-mail with threats that I am a liability--even though I have never failed an audit, have always covered others shifts whenever asked, and work all the holidays.

Stuff like that used to matter when it came to being considered an asset to a company, but none of that matters anymore. It has changed so much out there, even just in the last 5 years, and not for the better as far as the working mother is concerned.
