Besides, how many of us are "older" and - getting close to retirement?

It is well-known that age discrimination is alive and well. If many of us were to go out and pound the pavement (probably figuratively, not literally) it would be for nothing. Especially if we try to change line of work. They would see someone older than 50 or 55 (maybe even older than 65, like me) and wouldn't give us the time of day. Before you say this sounds defeatist, think about it. Especially when I hear that the "new age" they are discriminating against is 40! There is no point on expending all the effort and the mainly unpleasantness of looking for a new job until the economy at least starts to show more signs of life. Of course, if you are younger than, say, 45 or 50, it might be worth the effort -- you have a relatively long time left to work.

Just saying.
