Some monitors still have external buttons. It depends on what you get. Mine is a few months old, 23-inch widescreen Samsung, and has buttons on the bottom to adjust levels. As you said though, it should have come with a disk or manual.
As for the font trick, that just affects the typing screen. The ADT panel and CP panel are not affected and still remain small.
