what's your fave ergonomic keyboard - ?

Posted: Jul 31, 2010

Well I just spent a load of $ on a fancy-schmancy ergonomic Goldtouch keyboard, and I like the layout, EXCEPT that after a month, the keys are hard and gluey-feeling. It was supposed to have a very "light touch." The space bar on the right side sticks constantly and I have to hit it so hard with my thumb, my hand is starting to hurt. What is your favorite ergonomic keyboard? I still remember a wonderful soft springy Compaq keyboard that I loved, until my coworker worked at my desk one day and spilled orange juice on it. That was in 1999. The scene is still branded in my mind, and how casually she said "sorry." Does anyone use the Kinesis and does it have a soft touch?

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 $49 at Staples - LB1234

I got Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, $49 at Staples.

Three weeks ago I got a job that I had to do a lot of lines per day until work done. My boss had Goldtouch, but I did not have the $ for it. I liked it though and went and got this from Staples.

I LOVE IT. It had almost no learning curve for an ergo keyboard. I had tried to use them in the past and never could. It was hard for a while, but loosened up.

I can do 1800 lines a day and still my hands and wrists do not hurt-- But I found out some things that worked for me----
1. LEAVE YOUR WRISTS ON THE PROVIDED WRIST REST-- then you can use the keyboard without mistakes.

2. PUT THE KEYBOARD DIRECTLY ON YOUR KEYBOARD TRAY-- For many years I had typed with my keyboard up on "stuff" or something to extend my keyboard tray. When I put this directly on the tray, the touch was better and my elbows no longer hurt.

I will NEVER go back to a flat keyboard. After 3 weeks I am sold on this and the amount of production I can do without symptoms. My wrists and SHOULDERS do not hurt any more. I think it has allowed me to align my whole upper body better. A lot of sx from typing have gone away, and that is with very high production.

Sorry to go on, but I never got a keyboard I liked in all the years of transcribing. I was a cynic. But I love this and hope you find something. The keys don't spring back, have you looked into the old IBM M type keyboards? They are supposed to be springy?

Anyway, I like it better than my boss's Goldtouch. The lettering did all wear off on her's, and also I find this easier to type on, less mistakes for me. Goldtouch still had a learning curve I think.

That's all. That's my 2 c.

I also have the Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard. I had one previously and it finally wore out. The letters did wear out on the keyboard, though. On my new one, I put clear nail polish on the keys and that does help, though it wears off in time so you have to redo it. I do love it also and would never go back to a regular keyboard.

me too! - No pain

I also use the Microsoft Ergonomic 4000. Fantastic keyboard, but the most used keys fade away and not recognized over time. But as long as I know where "J" and "A" are, I can keep using it.

I've used the Microsoft gullwing for years, and wouldn't want to be without it - so I have a spare just in case.

If you invest in keyboard skin, you won't have a problem with letters wearing off or orange juice spills, dog hair, or crumbs. They come custom made for whatever model keyboard you uave and cost less than $20. Google "keyboard skin."

KINESIS FREESTYLE VIP. I ordered this and used it (sm) - yochana

for their 60-day free trial. I loved the touch, very soft and easy. What impressed me the most was when I separated the keyboard so there was a 1 inch space in the middle, I could not believe the relief I felt in my shoulders. All the pressure was gone that I did not even realize was there!! However, I sent it back because I COULD not get used to them moving the function keys to the weirdest places. I simply could not use it. If they would make this keyboard and put the function keys in a regular layout I would run as fast as I could to buy one. Some might get used to the layout but I could not for some reason. They still have a 60-day money back guarantee so you might want to try one out.

Yes, me too, would never go back to regular keyboard after Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000.

This should be under the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard - LB1234

This is meant to be under the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard comment where she says would never use a regular keyboard anymore.

I tried after I got the Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000, but could not even type--after only 2 days away from a regular keyboard. So guess I got used to the Ergo fast

Kinesis Advantage - deenibeeni

I've used this keyboard for going on 8 yrs. There's a learning curve because the keystrokes you normally do with your pinkies are now done with your thumbs; much better for your hands & arms. Took me a couple of weeks to get up to speed. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Absolutely the BEST keyboard. I have an older model & it's a little clackier than I would like, but the touch is soft. I recently took it apart & cleaned it really well & was amazed at how much it softened & loosened things up. I was also amazed at the stuff that was living in there, but oh well.

thanks for the info everyone and my final choice - OP

Deenibeeni has talked me into a Kinesis Advantage! I love the idea of a 2-piece Freestyle keyboard for straight typing, but the Advantage looks even better for the placement of the "thumb keys." That's what I need for editing, to have the CTRL and ALT keys in a good place. Also love the enter and backspace keys where they are. My Goldtouch is 2-piece but still connected by a joint at the top of the keyboard, and the page up/down, arrow, home and end keys are too small, and way off to the side. (BTW I found the solution for my sticking spacebar online-- take out the wire piece under the bar and twist it in a certain direction, and spacebar hasn't stuck since!)Well I'm off to the wonderful world of online shopping, to look for my keyboard!

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro...need A New Keyboard, Any Recommendations?

Need New Keyboard
Sep 13, 2014

Hello all, I am in need of a new keyboard.  I am using a Goldtouch now but the keyboard configuration does not really work for me, specifically the cntl, alt, and windows keys, as well as the home key.  I hit the wrong keys frequently, too much, and it hurts my production.  I do like the "touch" of it though.  I would like something that feels the same, a little bit spongy but not sticky.  Any suggestions.  TIA. ...

Keyboard
Jun 25, 2015

Hello, I am using a Microsoft split keyboard that is just about worn out and would like to know what most of you are using now. After using a split keyboard I do not think I could go back to a regular keyboard. Also, I keep the keyboard slanted to the left slightly which is more comfortable for me, probably because I am left-handed, but it does make to getting to some of the keys on my right hand a little difficult. Anyhow, just curious to see what most of you are using now. Thanks. ...
