Required Classes - Bobo

Posted: Mar 28, 2013

I am furious. Now, we are required to take classes on our own time without being reimbursed. What nerve.

No pay=not doing them. - Plain and simple

[ In Reply To ..]
What classes? I haven't heard anything about any required classes that we have to take on our own time. If they require them, then they will pay me or I'm not taking them. We already do enough work that we don't get paid for.

They can't legally do that.... - legaleagle

I haven't heard anything about mandatory classes but if they mandate it they have to pay you to attend.

Print that email, log and date your time spent - IAMT

as when you ever file with the Department of Labor, they certainly will count it. Illegal as can be.

Hope everyone is logging their time and not just sailing along with your total lines or CPL figures you accumulate as your hourly lobs are what the Department of Labor needs if and when you file for unpaid wages. Trust me on this, up until the time my last MTSO made us sign forms that we could not work over 40 hours without prior approval, I kept daily hour logs with meetings noted, time spent on emails and reviewing QA, time spent copying specifics, explained the situations in a phone call and the MTSO settled and paid after I filed. Documentation is a very important aspect of our jobs and you never know when you might need it.
and reading Fiesa also - good worker

If you bother to sign on Fiesa and read your feedback because they told you it is a must, then you must be paid for it. I told my supervisor (3 of them actually) unless they pay me I will not do it. I went to the Dept. of Labor website and copied the law for them and they STILL insisted I have to do it without pay. I told them they were wrong. Anything, anything at all, that is mandated by your job is to be paid.
Well, it seems to be they don't care about - what the DOL rules SM
[ In Reply To ..]
are. They keep doing these things over and over again (look at the lawsuit towards Transcend regarding breaking laws). Corporations and people in power do bad things all the time, sometimes they get caught, most of the time they don't. Since we as a group are isolated, fat chance we could ever come together and have any power against it. They count on that.
I turned my claim alone to the DOL. Don't need a group to file. - IAMT

Was NOT with Nuance, but my suggestion remains the same, log all hour time for everything with notes. If you ever do find yourself needing to file a claim, you will have all they need to file a claim and I was told after all these filings, most DOL offices are catching on to the discrepancies in labor laws from MTSOs.
Got an email today stating that those two - 15 minute breaks we get?
[ In Reply To ..]
are paid for and we are to be checking email and Fiesa during those 2 breaks. THAT, my friends is how they are going to get out of paying you for looking up your feedback in Fiesa. I knew they'd find a way.
paid breaks - TSMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Exactly HOW are they paying us for those 15-minute breaks? They only pay for lines produced. That's a bunch of BS.
Breaks - sickandtired
[ In Reply To ..]
Even if they were "paying" us for two 15-minute breaks, it is no longer a break if we are expected to continue to sit at our computers and read their bullshit. A break is just that, to get up and get away from the job you're doing.
The "Base Pay Program Philosophy"... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]

(see NTS 2013 Compensation Webinar) includes compensation for all time spent typing and editing reports; to include researching, proofing, and completing demographics.

They don't state more than that, but surely it can be inferred that breaks are also included? So, ya know, if they weren't  "paying" us for all these non-work extras, then our base rate would really be like 3 cpl, wouldn't it?

:slowly bangs head against desk:

break pay - good worker
[ In Reply To ..]
either you are paid for your break or not. If you are a production employee and are not producing then you are not getting paid. If we were being paid for our breaks then there would be a separate area on our paychecks that show an hourly rate of pay. We are not being paid for our breaks or reading Fiesa, etc. Also, if you are reading Fiesa during your "break" then you are not on a "break", you are working and should be compensated.

Classes - me

On each class and test they have sent out, they have put on the email how much time to put on your time card, so I'm not sure where you're getting your information. I have always been paid.

Mt Classes
Jul 24, 2013

I was at our county fair this afternoon (town of 2200) and I know someone who works in the on-line tech school office and she said that the MT classes are going strong and students are graduating and getting jobs, but apparently they are in-house.  I am going to get the teacher's name and number and call her and see where they are going and how much they are making as this does not make sense at all.  The place the classes come out of is about 80,000 people and I know that all the ...

I want to take coding classes, but the school that everybody says is the best is an online course.  I am an MT, working full time and then some.  The last thing I want to do is sit in front of the computer any more than I already do.  Why can't these classes be offered in a regular class setting?  I've never liked the idea of online school as long as I'm working on line.  Just too much sitting and staring at the screen.  I don't think I'm al ...

Can You Take Online Classes For Coding?
Dec 20, 2010

I'm new to this board so bear with me.  Having been a MT forever it seems, I'm thinking of making a switch to coding. At one point I was even hired as an entry level coder, learning on the job, but when i position came open in transcription took that as it paid better. In hindsight wish I had stuck with the coding as then could have gone either or even both ways.  My problem would be having to actually "go" to a school in person , but i would want something reputable, not som ...

Have been on E5 for a year and unable maintain 186 lph. This is the first time in my 20+ years as an MT that it has been so hard to reach the required lines.
