Nuance/Word 10/SH10 vs Autocorrect - Millie

Posted: Apr 01, 2012

Hi. Just hired at Nuance. They want us to use Autocorrect. I want to use SH10 as it is easier and much more versatile. Nuance says as long as it works with Word, then fine. SH10 suggests disabling Autocorrect. Any advice, comments, or suggestions? Thanks.

I use SH at Nuance, along with probably 1000 others. - VERY surprised at what you report

about a recommendation to use Autocorrect. WHO told you that?! I originally chose Shorthand for its excellent compatibility with many platforms. That seems really unlikely to be valid information--unless you were assigned to some obscure, uncooperative platform used at one of the companies they've absorbed.

In any case, I can't think abandoning one's dictionaries and changing to Autocorrect would be a valid option. It's an amateur feature and totally inadequate in comparison to a professional-grade program. Who could afford the drop in lines, drastic immediately until dictionaries were rebuilt as much as AC would be capable of, but still continuing permanently, slowed down by AC's inadequacies?

Expanders are no longer new, and most of us are so dependent on the ones we use that no company should still routinely ask people to just drop one and start using another. It's ignorant and damaging at best (a lot of people at a lot of companies are ignorant on this issue) and would be profoundly callous and exploitative at worst. Plus, it would lose them some of the best applicants because they'd tend to be among those most vested in expander use and couldn't comply.

I'd definitely suggest doing your own thing and, if there's a platform interface problem (doubt it), then dealing with that. If the Shorthand people couldn't fix your settings or something, I'd then explain to the company that I and my expander are a production team and we would have to be moved to a Shorthand-compatible platform--which would be almost all of them. If they wouldn't move me, with a dictionary of over 50K entries in constant use, I personally would have to move on. Seriously. Have Shorthand, will travel. :)

I've used SH... - Millie

for the last 6 years. I had over 60,000 entries. Before that, I typed in ExText for many years which had a fabulous macro program built in (very similar to SH).

It was A. in NTS_Training I asked about using SH because in the training video they talked about using AutoCorrect, how wonderful it was, blah, blah. A. told me as long as SH works in Word, no problem, but they would not support it in any way, i.e., if I have a problem with it, Tech Support will not help me resolve it. The program I'll be typing in is Escription (which is Word-based) on the Edit Script platform. (I hear Escription is wonderful, too. We'll see.) My account UPMC Cancer Centers, the same account I was typing at my old job. Old job lost the account when they got bought out because the new owners want to outsource and UPMC won't do business with companies that outsource. (Yayyy! I agree!) I was thrilled to get a call from Nuance that they got the account and would like me to test and work the account.

Unfortunately, I just upgraded to Word 2010 when I bought a new computer. It's the first version of Word where Alt+Ins doesn't copy text to the clipboard, so I will have to c/p my entries. (Why the heck Microsoft would have changed that is beyond me, but I'd recommend you don't upgrade to Word 2010 for just that reason.) SH also recommends in the User Guide disabling any AutoCorrect programs if you are having trouble with SH. Thus, my question. It's not about the platform, it's about the version of Word I'm using.

The SH I was using prior was company provided. When I got laid off, they quickly disabled my computer (company provided) before I could retrieve my dictionary. Acchhhhhh! So I'm starting over from scratch. I've downloaded SH (it's free for 30 days). I want to be sure it works inside the program (Escription) before I buy it.

I googled to figure out how to disable AutoCorrect (it isn't obvious in 2010), and I wanted to be sure it wouldn't wreck anything in Escription by disabling it. I just wanted to know if any other MTs had problems with SH and Word 2010.

Thanks for your reply. :)

it is compatible....I also us Shorthand with escription... - sm

I don't know why they told you that also. Whoever it is is very misinformed.

Millie, you're abandoning a dictionary with 50K entries? - NO! Contact your ex-employer IMMEDIATELY and

insist they e-mail you your dictionary(ies). It's every easily done, if it still exists, so it's outrageous that they did not automatically do that on request.

You should be outraged. Post and warn others of what happened to you. How much money have you lost already? BTW, you and others in the same situation likely have an actionable legal case for recovery of your dictionaries in the unlikely event they still exist and definitely for damages for lost income.

This is a BIG issue because it has severe financial repercussions for those victimized. It needs to be put a stop to. In the meantime, I STRONGLY recommend everyone always store their dictionaries to their personal computers.

My company, Webmedx, encouraged everyone to store their dictionaries on their computer, which I never did precisely because of this issue. Losing them if I were suddenly let go was not an option. Also, I brought Shorthand and my already large dictionaries with me as part of my assets when I was hired, so I was very careful not to do anything that might allow a company to claim ownership of what was mine.

Just disable autocorrect in Word. You are not disabling any other feature by doing so. You just don't want to confuse the program by using two "shortcut" programs at the same time. Your dictionaries will be there..you will lose nothing. I use PC Shorthand and always disable autocorrect in Word whether it be on my own computer or platform-based. It is no big deal... disable with confidence and get typing with your awesome shortcuts!

I didnt read the previous post thoroughly before...I didn't realize you lost all those shortcuts...Definitely try to get them back. In the future (I do this myself) - at least once a week e-mail yourself the file that contains the shortcuts...preferably to a webbased e-mail...so if your computer crashes, you will only have to reinstall the program, but still have the shortcuts. You will find in the file in c:sh10 folder. In the meantime, contact your old computer and ask them to look in that folder and to e-mail the file to you....maybe they will be agreeable/understandable. Good luck! I would cry if I lost my shortcuts...so sorry for you.

Word Autocorrect

I have been blessed with being able to work for smaller companies for the last 9 years.I just started with a new company and the platform doesn't support Word so I can't use my autocorrect, which I have been building shortcuts in all this time.
