My Nuance Experience - blessed

Posted: Jul 04, 2013

Happy 4th! I too am OOW, although I expected it to be that way. I took a PT position at Nuance back in February after we sold our home, got a rental, then bought a short sale. Having a fixer-upper, a mortgage and a rent payment, I needed some supplemental income. I've been an MT since 1996. Jumped in, no school, no certification. Bought an Olympus transcriber (cassette) and a Taber's. My first client was a general who saw 60+ patients a day. Paid me 8 cpl and trained me. Moved a year later, hit the ground running in my new town - mailed/handed out over 250 flyers. Got 3 clients - 2 surgeons and a general, but needed a little more. Interviewed with the local MTSO and realized how little I knew, LOL. These amazing people hired me anyway and basically finished my training. Fast fwd to last summer. Still with the local MTSO and still had one of my original private clients. When the EMR/EHR mandate hit, my local service lost one of my accounts and I lost half my income overnight. Thank God, not sinking, but having trouble treading water. We prayerfully decided to sell our house, and that brings us to now. Hiring/training with Nuance was relatively easily, although a complex bundle of procedures. I was recruited for a hem/onc, but was switched halfway through training to acute care. VR is at least 80%. I get my hours and rarely run out of work, except on holidays like today. I can usually make up any lost hours, but I only work 20 a week. I'm one of the luckies; my TLs are attentive, communicative and available. I went through the typical FIESA stress, until I decided I wasn't paid enough to get that worked up over it. This is my first experience with a national MTSO, and acute care as well. I had low expectations, understanding it was mostly VR and lower pay (I'm at $13.40/hr currently), but it was better than working at WalMart to fill my empty afternoons. In my humble opinion, if you like MT, get away from the national MTSOs if at all possible and find your own clients or a local service. My private client depends on me and wouldn't have it any other way, so I'll probably do him until he retires. My local MTSO rebounded and made it through the transition, and replaced my lost income with some great accounts - no VR (don't have it), big line counts. My annual income through the years has ranged from $40-$65K, and I'm looking at at least $50K this year again. If Nuance was my FT job, I'd be looking. Also, private accounts beat acute care any day for speed and dollar/hour. If you want to be happy at Nuance, fly under the radar and quit worrying about getting any bonuses. Do your best, pace yourself, and be consistent. I never get the weekly incentive because I don't generate enough lines, but my LPH (270+) and quality meet the criteria every time. I would probably generate enough if I didn't already have a FT job; right now its 13 and 14 hour days until this house gets finished. I'm blessed and grateful for the job, and I'm turning in my two weeks tomorrow. I don't burn bridges and am leaving the door open. I wish all of you wisdom and success in your decision-making, and pray that MT will still be here and will still be a good career choice in the years ahead for those of us who love it. I remain, "Blessed"

Thank you for sharing your experience...it made me smile! - Good luck to you

You make a lot of sense. Took me a long time to figure out what you figured out quickly..... don't worry about them. They are not worth it!

I had wondered about going part-time with them and doing something else and you post has me thinking about that again. Thanks!

Working For Nuance: A Truly Kafkaesque Experience!
May 06, 2015

If you doubt me, see the "Urban Dictionary" definition.  It's about as good as any that I have seen:   http://tinyurl.com/28rqen4 After working for far too long for a smaller MTSO, which was aquired by Nuance and which also treated its workers like dirt, and coming to this company, I begin to wonder if this is just the state of affairs in Health Information Services or just employment in the United States generally.  Trying to get and keep a decently paying job just seems l ...

Advice-Mixed Reviews On Transcend And Nuance, Anyone Care To Share Their Experience??
Oct 23, 2011

I am looking for a FT job with benefits and steady work.  I am considering applying to these 2 companies so I am hoping some will share their experiences good and bad so I can have something to compare to.  I currently am working on eScription through a local hospital as an IC so I wanted to apply at companies that I knew had eScription as I feel I am most productive on this platform. ...

I am a new graduate and need to find a job! I am also new to this site. I got the site info from a friend that has been doing transcription work for many years. I suppose in anything and not just medical. Experience in transcription is experience, right? ...

Wmx/nuance Paycut Meeting, listen To Tape Shut Up Or QUIT, Nuance Attitude?
Dec 12, 2011

According to a poster below which has apparently already attended one of the payroll meetings (as the poster posted) for nuance they have decided to keep the incentive part of all of our pay going with an exception that now you have to have over the industry standard of 98% to get a production based incentive. In addition (if this poster is accurate) they have again cut the overall pay from 8 and 4 to 3 3/4 AND 7 1/2. This is nothing but a bunch of crapploa...an MT who is now getting ...

Do You Think MT Experience Will Help In Getting An MR Job?
Feb 11, 2010

There is a hospital in my area that has 2 jobs I am interested in, one is a records analyst and the other is a records clerk.  I am definitely ready to start working outside of the home, but I fear my MT experience will not help me much in getting one of these jobs.  I am just wondering what you all think or if I should bother to apply.  I am thinking they are going to want people with hospital experience.  Thanks a bunch for any information!! ...

MD-IT..any Experience?
Apr 12, 2010

Hi.  I was recently hired as an employee with MD-IT.  I filled out all my paperwork, did my computer audit, background check, etc. and was supposed to call at 9:00 a.m. this morning to begin downloading their transcription platform.  Well, I called and got voicemail.  I left a message and have not heard back.  To me, if you have an appointment scheduled, you should be available for that appointment.  I'm sure they would expect nothing less from me.  I real ...

Experience.
Jun 08, 2010

I have been noticing that the experience level required to even get looked at for an MT job has went up. The 2 year experience mark has now went to 3 in most postings, and alot more postings are stating they want a minimum of 5 years. It is an up hill battle in an already hard market but with these kind of requirements I supose the seasoned MT's can rest a little easier and the newbies I guess can look for another line of work. I have already switched my gears and will finish my MA deg ...

Too MUCH Experience?
Jul 23, 2010

I am trying to figure why I never get a call-back on job applications anymore.  For instance I applied at one company who was advertising a week or so ago, I'm sure I did perfectly or almost so on the test, never heard from them, and yet now they are advertising again.   My range is not great, mostly ER and clinic, so maybe this is the issue but I have applied for these positions recently to no avail. I have 16 years experience and I wonder if they think I will want too much ...

How To Get Experience W/o Job & Job W/o Experience?
Sep 18, 2010

it's the old question - how to get acute care experience that everyone wants - when none of the local hospitals are hiring for MT (I've checked).  I could try "cold calling" doctor's offices and see who does their transcription (unless they have some kind of digital chart system - fill in the appropriate boxes on their laptops - I think our family doc uses that system). I actually had "formal" hospital acute care training 11 years ago - so seems like a lifetime ago.  Th ...

My Experience With TTS
May 26, 2011

I just wanted to let anyone who may be interested know what my experience with TTS has been recently.  A job for a Delta Team member was advertised, for which I applied with my resume and cover letter.  It's worth noting here that I meet every qualification in the ad.  The job sounded like it was difficult, but I applied as I wanted a salaried position.  I received an e-mail from *******, the same one who was sent packing from another MTSO last year.  The e-mail gave all sorts of inf ...

How Can I Get More Experience?
Jul 14, 2012

I was working 40 hours per week as an oncology transcriber until the company I worked for was outsourced by Nuance.  Now, I am trying to find another transcribing job that does not require 2+ years of experience.  I only have about 15 months of experience in oncology.  Does anyone have any idea of how I can get more experience so that I can eventually apply for jobs with 2+ years of experience?  I am willing to work cheap just so that I can get that two years in. ...

New MT....How To Get Experience?
