Pay - what specialty to choose - sm

Posted: Feb 04, 2010

Does anybody know which MT specialty offers the best pay rate?  I was told by one of my instructors that pathology and radiology were this highest paid MTs around.  Another instructor thought that specializing in OP reports would offer the greatest income potential.  Thanks

My opinion - LK

Acute care MTs seem to be the most in demand. At my company, pay is determined by type of report, with Op notes being the highest-paid. I don't really know much about what pathology and radiology MTs make, though. My advice to any new MT would be to get acute care experience if you can. Knowing a lot of specialties in the hospital setting will probably take you further than doing just a single specialty.

Chances are extremely slim that will find a position that will allow you limit your work to just one specialty and do just one type of report. Most MTs do every specialty from neurology to podiatry, and produce all types of reports from clinic notes to OPs.

Especially when you are just starting out, don't expect to limit yourself to just one specialty. this will work in your favor, as the more varied your experience, the more job prospects you will have when you get some experience under your belt.

MTSOs prefer acute care experience, so work your way into this. You could start our doing clinic work and progress to the acute care and OPs eventually.

Good luck.

Look at the Job Seekers Board here and you will see most companies are hiring for acute care. If you only want to learn 1 specialty, then your job prospects will be very limited. My advice is to work your way from clinic into acute care, where you will learn all specialties and have more job options. Many have made the mistake of doing only one specialty out of school and now find themselves having a hard time finding a job, especially radiology. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Specialty Lookup Has Changed :-(
May 30, 2013

There's a site I'd been referencing for a long time when I couldn't find a doctor through Fluency, which is often. It was always easy, user friendly and reliable, and I could usually find the doctor I was looking for under his or her specialty. Now it's been changed to a newer, sleeker pretty look, but the format for finding a doctor doesn't work and is not helpful at all. For instance, in looking up, say, Pulmonary doctors, it shows an assortment of doctors of variou ...

I've been looking for weeks.  The hospital I've been IC with for years is getting rid of all ICs - going totally VR and keeping only their existing employees.  I've tried to be very selective, looking for that great little company somewhere that would treat me with a little respect and value my years of experience.  Well, now I'm to the point that I need to start bringing in a paycheck ASAP.  I've been offered both M-Modal and Nuance - which were my v ...

Looks Like QA Really Can Pick And Choose!
Jan 04, 2015

After browsing around in FIESA, I found what looks to be an instruction manual for the people who audit us and after looking at it, it sure does look like they can pick and choose which reports to audit, rather than randomly. I have also had the worst dictators audited more than the good ones. Of course it's easier to find a mistake that way and easier to keep our pay down! Remember 7 cpl is really equal to only 3.5 cpl if most of your jobs are VR. ...
