Considering pursuing MT certification - JK

Posted: Dec 13, 2010

Hello, I am looking for some input. I have been a veterinary technician for several years and am very well versed in medical terminology as I have published and lectured. I am looking for a change and MT appeals to me for many reasons. My main concern is being unable to find a job after completing certification for I have no contacts and have heard of "newbies" having a hard time finding work. Obviously I do not want to spend money only to find no way in afterwards. Does anyone know of programs that help with employment or have any comments if this is worth pursuing for me? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Funny.... I've been an MT for 35 years, and if I were - younger, I"d want to be a vet tech! (sm)

There seems to be no limit of openings for vet techs, but unless you want to work a grossly underpaid job for an MTSO, there's not a lot out there anymore. I'm assuming you want full-time employment with full benefits, as IC work, although it pays a couple cents more, is still on the losing end because you have to buy your own insurance. Even with an MTSO, it's not easy to find as a newbie, because the good ol' days of being able to continue your education on-the-job are pretty much over. In the hourly-paid, onsite jobs, they used to welcome trainees who were new to the field, because they could train them THEIR way. Now, it's all about money (for the MTSO) and production. I'm not saying you won't find work as a newbie, because you will. It will just take more looking. Unfortunately, most of the companies that actively employ new MTs are some of the worst-paying, unscrupulous companies out there. They'll take on the newcomers because they are the easiest to underpay, and to cheat. So you have to keep your eyes open, keep a meticulous personal job log, monitor your paychecks and line counts, etc., to be sure they aren't cheating you.

The ideal candidate for most of the big nationals has 1-3 years' experience; enough that they can usually do the work, but still naiive enough to not realize their work is deplorably undervalued and underpaid.

I would rather be a vet tech, because I think the job pays better is more valued by the employer, and if nothing else, you're helping animals, which I perceive as being far higher on the evolutionary scale than most MTSO executives.

Vet tech - JK

Vet techs are also grossly underpaid. I would tell you that you have not missed out on much with the exception of taking care of animals, who I agree are much higher on the evolutionary scale (LOL). But that could be our cynicism after working in our respective fields for as long as we have. I actually do not want benefits or even FT hours. I liked the idea of working from home, and I thought I could still use some of my medical knowledge. I had no idea that there were unscrupulous companies out there. I am really glad you replied and would love to hear if you have more to offer. Iwould also be happy to answer any vet tech questions you may have. Thanks again!

I wish I made more money, and had more free - time, because what I would - (sm)

really like to be able to do is help cats. They're out there breeding like gerbils, being mistreated by humans, too many living feral lives, etc.

I guess I'd start by helping to trap and neuter all the feral cats I could. And if I had a bigger place to live than a studio apartment, I would adopt a few more than the 2 I already have. And/or foster cats, too.

Sometimes I think the public needs to be educated about cats; they all too often seem to be treated as 2nd-class-citizens of the pet world. Men think it's macho to "hate cats". Young boys think it's cool to torture them, etc.

Even at the vet's office, I find my cats take a back seat to dogs. Last year my vet prescribed Metacam (meloxicam) for one of my cats after a biopsy was taken of a lump. My cat got deathly ill, and thank goodness I researched the drug online before giving her a 2nd dose! Not only that, she was given the DOG formula! Needless to say, I haven't been back.

At another vet, I rushed a cat in that had collapsed in pain, and was nearly unconscious from a urinary obstruction. The vet couldn't be bothered to even work him into the day's schedule, because he was seeing a dog at the moment. The cat later died.

I recently discovered that there is a cats-only veterinarian not far from my town, so even though it's probably more expensive, I think that's where I'll be heading.

Anyway, I got off the subject of MT-ing, but as a vet-tech you can probably understand the above rant! ;)

Sounds fun. But you forget you have to deal with owners, Drs, - co-workers, not so fun. nm

I would like to be a vet tech and work with exotic animals--rhinos, tigers, bears.
Then you can leave owners out of the equation but the rest still - stands, Especially co-workers are NO fun. nm

Pursuing Something Else?
Aug 22, 2010

Was just curious how many on here are or have trained for a different profession.  If so, what are you doing -- coding?  nursing? All of this talk about "going back to school," but FOR WHAT?  Someone please name a sector of our economy that hasn't been DESTROYED!  We can't all become hairdressers and nail technicians.  Oh, and don't even start about "green jobs," that is such a tiny number of jobs it's laughable, plus I doubt many here will become so ...

Recruiter Really Pursuing Me - Regarding Radiology
Aug 18, 2010

I didn't even apply to your company but for some reason they're all over me, calling and emailing.  I type radiology only; I told the recruiter that.  He insists I need to put in an application and test, but I'm not sure I want to spend the time and of course he refuses to give me any details until I spend it.  I know the Q's reputation is pretty bad - so I'm asking - how are the rad accounts?  And why don't they just advertise for rad MT's ...

Apr 04, 2014

Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field, professional background in management, then 10+ years in medical transcription, new coder.  Interested in future healthcare management.  Would a BSN/nursing degree be desireable?  Or better to pursue a second bachelor's or a Master's in HIM? Or ... other that I have not considered but should? Looking for insight or thoughts.   ...

Anyone Pursuing Finding Work As A "medical Scribe"?
Jun 24, 2012

I've seen reference to this career path from time to time here....wondering if there's anything new to add?   I have a friend who recently went to work as an MT for a doctor's office.  She's typing the minor emergency room notes or same-day surgery notes or something like that.  Their PCPs do their own EHR, but she said the doctors really dislike having to do it, and it reduces the number of patients they can see each day.   As the EHR is implemented mor ...

Certification?
Apr 27, 2010

I took online coding program years ago as well as an MT program.  I decided to go into MT but am wanting to start back up with coding again.  Is it worth it to do another coding program or to pursue a certification?  I'm not sure the money I'd need to spend would really justify either.  I've been doing a lot of research and while certification is preferred, it's not always a requirement in job descriptions.  Thanks ...

Is CMT Certification Worth It?
Feb 14, 2010

What are your feelings about obtaining your CMT credentials when VR (at least with my employer) doesn't follow BOS or acknowledge the styles, forms and practices that, at one time were the norm? I get blown away with sentence structure and grammar these days.  Do you think one should become certified with the latest trend with VR?  Seems to me "No", not worth it, unless I moved on to a company who did not use VR. But, then again, if this is the trend hospitals and companies a ...

I am curious about whether one has to have a certain amount of experience in coding before you can take the CCA or CCs certification exam.  I have had 20 years of A&P and know a considerable amount about disease process.  I have been studying coding on my own for about a year now.  I know that your chances for passing the test are better if you have been in the coding business for several years, but has anyone out there taken the CCS just by studying and utilizing their life e ...

Question About CMT Certification
Jun 02, 2011

Hi all, I have been a transcriptionist for right at 6 years.  I have been thinking about certification, but wondered if I should do it.  The only problem I see in obtaining it is my experience.  I have basically been doing clinic work with my company and a little acute care, but not much else.  I know that pay wise, it really doesn't seem to help having the credential and I think that is a true shame, because I know the MTs who do have the credential have worked very ha ...

Mandatory Certification?
Jan 14, 2012

I was told by someone who attended a recent ICD-10 academy (for trainers) that the OIG is requiring all (current) coders to be certified by the October, 2013, ICD-10 implementation date.  I am aware of the OIG's compliance guidelines, but nowhere in that document do I find anything about mandatory certification. Also, I am not sure if they meant certified in ICD-9 or 10, but it is my understanding that the last ICD-9 CCS/CCS-P exam will be given in March, 2013, and at this point nobod ...

I'm seriously considering going to school for coding and have started to make plans accordingly.  This isn't a big question, but one my husband brought up:  Do you take the certification exams online or do you have to travel to a facility to take them?  Do you take the exams through your school or through the agency doing the certification?  Thanks in advance. ...

Passed The CPC-H Certification!
Sep 25, 2012

I just got my results in the mail from AAPC that I passed the certification exam for CPC-H! I have been an MT for decades and when my last in-house MT job was outsourced, I decided I'd better get moving on to coding. Coding is very difficult and I had quite a time completing the online CPC-H course offered by AAPC. I started in the Spring and just got certified. I want all the MTs out there to know that terminology, A&P are helpful to already know! It was not easy to get this certificat ...

CBCS Certification?

CCS CERTIFICATION EXAM
May 05, 2015

Can someone tell me how many questions there are that pertain to medical terminology, A and P, etc as opposed to actual coding questions on the CCS coding certification test? I am an MT, have basic knowledge of terminology, but there are so many new terms that I must learn, not to mention the A and P section.  I do the lessions, do the chapter review tests, take the weekly exams and do well, but I do not think I am retaining too much after I test.     The coding tests, however, ...

Online MT Courses For Certification....

Does anyone know if there are any online MT courses for certification that have financial aid?  Most of the ones I have come across so far have no financial aid, want payment up front, or want at least 200/month payment, which I cant do.  I was a MT for about 10 years, got out of it for a couple of years, and cannot seem to get a job now that I would like to return to it, so thought getting certified would help.  With our financial state though, I cannot afford a big payment of an ...

Certification Exam Requirements
Aug 06, 2012

Leadership, Unity, Certification
Nov 02, 2012

This industry really needs an association of some kind for the purpose of providing certifications that clients can trust. These certifications can be used to certify that a MTSO or an IC is really U.S. based and does not offshore. Certifications can also be used for other purposes such as certifying accredited MT invoicing software. There needs to be more cohesiveness and leadershup in this industry and so far I have not seen it. Having worked in the real estate industry before joining my fam ...
