Which is it guys! Acute AND chronic back pain - or acute ON chronic back pain.

Posted: Mar 20, 2010

I just received my audit of five reports and in the diagnosis I put:

Acute and chronic low back pain.

I received a minor feedback and it was changed in the diagnosis to:

Acute on chronic low back pain.

Is this something new that I am not aware of?

Stupid correction - me

I've done it both ways, but I do think 'on' is probaby more correct, but 'and' isn't necessarily wrong. I suppose you would just have to know if that is exactly what the doctor said.

acute on chronic - ee

It is acute on chronic back pain..meaning the patient has chronic back pain and now an acute episode on top of the already existing chronic back pain.

Thanks! No message below - I appreciate your answer!

Acute ON chronic--especially if the patient is being treated for a current flare-up. In other words, he has chronic trouble (whatever it is) and is having an acute episode that needs immediate attention.

and/on - huh?

I do agree with post about it being "on". However, please listen to the dictator on this...sometimes they actually are saying "and". Got dinged for that before as well. It should be "acute on chronic", but heaven forbid you change it.

yes - acute on chronic the correct way - sm

it basically means a severe pain that's on top of a normally persistent pain.

Here are some of my observances of chronic ASR errors, though sometimes it gets it right.  Most are not a biggie, but one could get marked down on an audit. 1.  BiPaP.  Should be BiPAP.  2.  Levothyroxine.  ASR capitalizes the "L" for some reason.  This med is a generic for the brand Levothyroid.  Should be levothyroxine. 3.  FIO2.  Should be FiO2. 4.  Hospice.  In the English dictionary, this is simply hospice. If a specific organi ...
