Still amazed by the "fast readers of ASR" - sick and tired

Posted: Jul 03, 2010

Not only does my ASR type gibberish a great deal of the time, it also types the wrong word a lot.  Just now the doctor said "his procedure was postponed" and ASR put "the procedure was postponed."  It also leaves out a ton of stuff such as "there was" and "in the;"  just totally puts nothing and goes onto the next word.  If I am not going relatively slow and really concentrating on the context of the report, I would miss some of these things that are not blatantly just misspelled.

So I am supposed to totally read and re-do this whole report word by word and be 40% FASTER than if I typed it like some of these posters say they are doing?

I have seen a change and I believe this is another ploy to get us to fail these audits.  This is really tedious now and it is on nearly every report -- whether it is ESL or very plain-speaking good ol' American doctors.

When I first started ASR in 2006 it was a dream because I would make corrections maybe every paragraph. My hands were getting a break. Now, corrections have to be made every sentence, sometimes every other word.

My Take - MT

I think they actually used to discriminate on who gets to dictate on ASR--I remember 2006, and it wasn't horrendous. It started out just the really easy clinic dictators, then somewhere along the line, they decided to just throw hundreds of doctors in a huge hospital on the system.

I honestly have trouble blaming ASR itself. One can only expect so much from a machine. I blame the people who chose to use it in this way, and to pay us less, to boot.

Unbelievable - anon

Just had a dictator who wanted to number everything with "next."

ASR did not put the same thing twice, although dictator clearly said "next" every time. It put "Texas" once and "nexus" once. Why would it not hear the same thing (wrong) every time. Why hear 10 different (wrong) things?

Also a long list of medications, pretty much all were mg dosages. It put grams every time. Why could it not hear "milligrams?" I certainly heard it every time (thank goodness for the patient).
Grams vs milligrams - MT

I have a dictator who tends to "swallow" his first syllables and all his milligrams come up grams. I use the search/find/replace function and just fix them all in one swoope before I even let him get a word out of his mouth. If I see his name, I just know and take care of it, 1,2,3.

Good idea. Thanks. Every little bit helps. - anonymous

Amazed
Jan 12, 2015

After being beat down at MModal and finally blowing my stack and quitting, here I sit feeling exactly the same way with Nuance. Since the new pay plan started, I have managed to get a major error (3-pointer) on 1 report (and only 1 report) every week after having exactly 1 major error for the ENTIRE year I have worked here before that. It's amazing how bad I am at this job after 10+ years of working at it, priding myself on my line counts and accuracy. This company can kiss my you know what ...

Now I'm Not Fast Enough
Jan 29, 2014

I don't know what these companies expect.  I think they all think we are robots that can be programmed.  My quality is excellent but I'm not fast enough doing VR.  I have NEVER been able to do VR as fast as I can type, but they seem to think that with VR you should be able to do TWICE as much as straight typing-- not!  I wish they WOULD just get robots to do the work-- then they wouldn't have to pay ANYTHING-- just the initial cost of the robots. With what they ...

Okay I Now Know They Are Trying To Fast Kill Me.
Apr 22, 2010

So much for the slow death, we have now been given an account because of loss of work in my account I have had for 20 years.  Given an account that is total ESL residents and PAs.  No following style of dictation.  Absolutely NOT to be found or understood who they are, much less dictating on patients not even entered correctly by their MRN.   I have not had to send anything to QA but now it is to this.  They want me to fail.  So, guess what I will continue to w ...

Fast Chart And Fees
Feb 18, 2011

I applied to Fast Chart, tested and then was offered a position.  So, I read their contract and got to the fees section.  I knew they charged a 7.50 fee for not meeting your line requirement, but then there was going to be another fee after you had been there for 90 days.  This fee is calculated using some kind of formula 40.00 - (A/B)*40....A is number of lines you actually transcribed and B is the Line requirement and then there is another formula to calculate edited lines.  ...

VR Is NOT Twice As Fast As Straight Typing!
Nov 28, 2012

I used to love my job, being an at-home medical transcriptionist. I used to make around $20-25 an hour straight typing and thought being an at-home medical transcriptionist was the best job ever! The flexibility of working from home and flexing my hours was great! I could get the kids off to school, work for a couple of hours, go shopping, work for a couple of hours, just so I made production requirements and everything was great! Unfortunately, things changed and they started making us ...
