Medquist's "exit and disposal" plan - MB

Posted: May 30, 2010

I found this on Medquist's latest quarterly financial report. It's pretty self-explanatory, although I think it is probably for the suits, as we MT/MEs don't get any severance pay. But it gets me that they can nonchalantly say that the employees who are about to be "disposed" of aren't even aware of it.

2009 Restructuring Plan
During the third and fourth quarters of 2009, as a result of management’s continued planned process improvement and technology development investments we committed to an exit and disposal plan which includes projected employee severance for planned reduction in headcount. Because of plan development in late 2009 and execution of the plan over multiple quarters in 2009 and 2010, not all personnel affected by the plan know of the plan or its impact. The plan includes costs of $2.5 million for employee severance and $0.4 million for vacating operating leases. The table below reflects the financial statement activity related to the 2009 restructuring plan:

This proves they have a plan to get rid of employees - Including us.

I read on another blog that MQ "lowered transcription costs by increasing its use of speech recognition technology."

Is that the press release MQ gave?? What a warped point-of-view. I guess it's the corporate way of looking at justifying slashing our income and other underhanded ways of making us quit to "decrease their transcription costs." Wish I could publish my own public press release.

Does that include Spheris? - mom2huskies

I read somewhere that they were offering $850,000 severance pay to some of the CEOs who worked with Spheris. Yet, they neither the Q or Spheris would ever give a raise to the MTs who are the backbone of the company.

On the same day it asked the court for permission to compensate employees for their accrued paid time off, bankrupt Spheris filed a motion asking the court to approve a bonus compensation plan for 30 senior employees.

The âKey Employee Incentive Plan,â or KEIP, would pay 25 Spheris employees and five executives an aggregate amount up to $850,000 for âtheir continued high performanceâ through the closing of the sale or reorganization plan.

The idea is to incentivize these employees â who are essentially working toward a transaction that could eliminate their jobs â to stay with the company and help it bring in the highest possible sale price or work through a reorganization plan.

The juicy details â which employees are eligible for what dollar amounts â are being given to the court confidentially. The motion, available at this link, explains that the five executives will receive no more than a total of $345,000, and the 25 employees could get amounts ranging between $10K and $50K.

According to the motion, the debtorsâ compensation committee approved the KEIP on Jan. 14, the senior secured lenders have no objections to the plan, and Spheris has reached an agreement in principle with its unsecured creditors.

Reading this article just felt like another slap in the face.

MQ 1st Quarter Fin Report Details Disposal Plan For US MTs
Aug 21, 2010

Exit and "disposal" plan exposed in the report which also states "targeted" employees don't know about it. Do they think we can't read their stuff on the web??? It will occur over the rest of 2010. In other words, we are so low they consider us garbage to be disposed of. Unbelieveable as a lot of us left have worked for this company over a decade. Where's our gold watch, for cryin out loud??? ...

With New Plan STM Stated 35% Of Our Team Would C Increase With New Comp Plan
Dec 04, 2014

This means 65% will see decrease and/or paid minimum wage. They are touting this as the great new comp  (local Burger King is advertising job for $10/hour).  Anyone find out if the QC percentage is just for blanks or include all sent to QA including Audio issues, etc, and will EQA be included.  Also, trying to figure out our pay from week to week is going to be a pain.  I am going to see how this new comp plan works out, but since the conference call, I'm not feeling pos ...

Exit Strategy
Nov 26, 2013

I've pursued this line of work more out of obligation rather than choice. I know where the wind is blowing, so I'm going back to school for my Associate of Applied Science. But I'll have to juggle work and school for 2 years. I currently work an "Indian QA" company. I had a rocky start, such that I had considered quitting and I take my chances with another company. I wisely stuck with them (after advice from this very board), and it's a good thing I did, because the seemin ...

Exit Interview / Survey
Jul 07, 2012

A couple of days ago I received a phone call that I guess was an exit interview/survey. They asked questions on very specific subjects, which led me to believe the company knows where it's failing. The questions were multiple choice (satisfied, dissatisfied, etc.), and asked specifically about CCM communication, benefits/PTO, line count with straight typing vs VR, and if there were any issues considered to be unethical or illegal. For what good it did, I did let them know how dissatisfie ...

Had My Exit Interview Today
Aug 05, 2013

Had my exit interview today and was BRUTALLY honest.  I would like to think I helped the rest of ya all still in this business, but probably not.  I explained in very frank words that twice working for Medqust/M Modal was two times too many.  On the question of how M Modal can maintain a low turnaround in employees and make working with them better, I went with STOP off-shoring all the work, STOP the NJA, STOP the threats of firing with a failed audit.  Keeping the work in the US will solve ...

Why Bother With Exit Interviews

Exit Interview Phone Call Today
Aug 06, 2012

I left MM a few weeks ago and today got a call. They asked lots of questions about how satisfied or unsatisfied I was with MM and I answered them all as honestly as I could. When they asked if I thought any of their practices were illegal or unethical...I told them that hiring people to work for you and then expecting them to use their PTO or go without pay when there was not enough work was extremely unethical. Especially when you have many MTs with NJA daily and others with mandatory OT someti ...

This Is My Plan-
Aug 28, 2013

I will check for work during my schedule. Work it if possible, if not, just use the no wrk excused absence comment. I am not going to work around the clock to try and make it up. Ridiculous. If you want to, that is okay, but seems crazy to ask people to do this.  Why don't the supervisors/TSMs have a call about this. We get an email, but never anyone to tell us directly about a change. I just cannot believe that they expect employees to try and make up the time. ...

New Pay Plan...cant We....sm
Oct 15, 2014

Cant we all write the guys who are on the e-mail we all got if in fact this turns out to be something bad? Flood their emails and desks? Ya know its too bad we cant get together 500+ MLS and go on strike... I would do it. If a ton of us went on strike and demanded fair wages and changes, with noone typing their reports for 48+ hours I think they'd listen. It kind of sounds like the pay will be the same even if they lower the base..... b/c if they lower the base rate but you get a tad extra ...

New Pay Plan...? Sm
Nov 30, 2014

Sounds like they are taking out the LPH requirements? Or am I the only 1 thinking this? Sounds like they take out the requirement for LPH. Now your lines may drop due to focusing more on QA/blanks/rereading,etc.  Normally that would lower your lines and lower your pay. Now it will lower your lines BUT you will send less to Q and have less mistakes so your pay will ultimately stay the same. This is how I am taking all of this. The only thing I am not getting is if we are going to have a base ...

Even Though I Will Do Well With This New Pay Plan,
Dec 13, 2014

The abuse and the stress have gone beyond the pale. The people who put together this pay plan have no idea what it is like to work in the trenches. We have taken pride in our work and have loved the field of medical transcription, but they have made us hate it. They have caused us to make more mistakes. We are not focused on what we are doing at any given moment; we are focused on our overall scores and thinking about how we're going to make enough money to buy winter boots for our children ...

New Changes In Pay Plan
Feb 09, 2015

Did anybody get the email about the changes they are making.  We have longer time to request a reversal (big deal - they never approve them so really????) and now they can QA us for our 2 weeks rather than our 1 weeks which in my  opininon just gives them more time to pick apart which ones they want to check and find their errors to total up!!!  That is great idea. ...

PTO With Pay Plan Question
Dec 30, 2010

Does anyone know if the PTO we see as of today in teamwork is the correct remaining PTO for the rest of the year?  I was not sure if the pto we used previously in the period ending 12/26 is reflected in the current PTO in teamwork yet.   This is confusing me since we will get a 12/31 paycheck.  I know pto will not accumulate until next year but it looks like to me I did not lose any PTO even since taking a few hours ending the 26th.  any clues out there?  ...
