low work - watch and wait game - Maynell

Posted: May 05, 2013

Hey MTs:

So concerned about my job, been a transcriber 30 years and now work is being taken by Epic and Dragon plus an outsource company at my hospital.  Should the transcribers be looking for other jobs ?  We are not told much from the "higher authorities" of what is going to happen, unless maybe they don't know yet.  Any input out there ?

Here is what will happen: - First

You will be flamed for calling yourself a "transcriber" and probably be accused of being a foreigner or someone who is not really part of the MT world, especially if you visit this message board even occasionally you should know what will happen, which is this:

If you are really an MT for a hospital you will probably be offered a job as a "transcriber" for the service you are being outsourced to. From there it will be a downward spiral until you are making less and less money and may eventually find yourself applying for food stamps and/or living under a bridge. The "higher authorities" know this, and that is why they will not tell you anything. Good luck because you'll need it.

Thanks for the heads up. We all have to stick together !

Yes, I'd be looking for a different job. Hospitals think that it will take a long time to "go live" with these programs, but in reality, most doctors just start and don't look back. They told me at my job that it would be a month, and I was literally done within the first five days. No more work came in.

I lost my job due to EPIC. (And yes, I am a single mom.)

I would look for a job in the hospital - sm

Transcription is a dying art. If you can take a clerical job in the hospital, while your there you should be top choice for any job openings.

You really do need to look at other options. We are fully EHR, offer Dragon, and still outsource a huge amount of transcription with no sign of that ever slowing, but the experience others have has been less fortunate.

I think most MTs need to start mapping an escape route. I got out and into HIM itself several years ago. I am happy that I did.

I would work on getting another job in HIM first, or anywhere in the hospital if that is not an option. See if your facility offers training funding. Even if they do not, consider advancing with your education. Online programs in HIM are very feasible now and open doors. The one at WGU can get you a bachelor's degree and an RHIA at minimal cost and in less than 3 years if you are motivated.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like great advice !

I went through what you are currently going through. My facility uses Epic and Dragon. We still had plenty of transcription work, but approximately a year after Epic "go live" all the work was sent offshore and the entire department was laid off but we all knew it was coming, just not when. Your "higher authorities" may not know what to expect yet. I would suggest watching and waiting, but don't quit voluntarily unless you get another job. My employer helped us with placement in other departments (I am now in HIM) and those who did not want to stay were given severance packages. The good thing about staying there as long as you can is that you have access to the internal job boards. Also, they may still need some MTs or perhaps some QA staff. Not knowing what will happen can be very stressful, but hang in there.

Administration knows very well what's going on and when. - They got this down to a science SM

[ In Reply To ..]
They have things planned out 5 years in advance if not more. Our hospital is pulling the same crap; they started telling us almost 2 years ago about "continuing education" and then when people figure it out and start asking questions, higher admin comes in and plays the crystal ball card (well we dont have a crystal ball to see what's going to happen in the future...) and mentions that "in the future we might not need as many of you..." but they don't come right out and have the common decency to tell us so people can start making plans for their futures.

Admin says "we'd tell you if we knew anything..." which is complete bull. She knows very well what's going on but they don't want anyone jumping ship because they want the work continuing to get done at high quality they are so proud of.

Administrators are liars. The bottom line is the almighty dollar. Sit there and brag themselves up, pat themselves on the back about how wonderful the organization is and how community-minded they are, how patient care focused, etc. Yep, concerned about paying patients and don't give a crap about their employees. I'm not so proud to work for this company any more. They are just as dirty and sneaky as any other corporation.

Under the circumstances, I know it is difficult not to be hurt and angry. However, some advice from someone who has been through this: Keep your thoughts to yourself. You may need a job down the line and if you want to keep your benefits and tenure, it might behoove you to scratch some backs. Good jobs are not that easy to find, unless you want to find yourself in another MT job at an employer 10 times worse. Without those paying patients, none of us would have jobs, including administration - they are your customers, and we have all been patients, I'd be careful about repeating that comment. Our administrators came through and helped us at the end. I don't think what they did was fair, but I am thankful to have a job. All I'm saying is, don't burn your bridges, you may regret it later.

...18 years in a hospital, then on to MedQuist, then another 9 years with Spheris, now 4 years with a midsized company that's become Indian owned, on an account being eaten by Epic. Tired of this steady downward progression, tired of being depressed and worrying what to do when it ends, which it certainly will, and of course, the "higher authorities" won't be telling you or me any more than they absolutely have to. I took the jump and am training to be a nurse's aide. Not expensive, 75 hours that I'm doing on Saturdays (and hey, I'm enjoying it). You pass a state test and voila, you have something new on the resume and can find a place locally; there are tons of them out there who need good folks like you and me. Will be glad to have something when this job bites the dust or maybe even before.

My daughter, who is 17,took the CNA class last year and has been working full time while attending school, dual enrolled in HS and JC. She gets almost $10/hr and loves it. She has started her nursing studies and has pretty good hours at the assisted living facility. Also, when she is 18, she can get into home care if she wants a change of pace. So many jobs for this out there. But, you have to not mind doing some of the dirty work the RNs don't want to do.

Not Playing This Game
Mar 16, 2010

I've been reading all the posts on here, I have read the emails from Medquist. I don't do this job for fun.  I do it to get paid.  If I have to spend all my time looking up old reports and trying to figure out what this doctor mumbled or that one said when his head was underwater, my line counts will go down...meaning less pay. And yet if I send blanks to the client that get audited and THEY think I could have found the information, I go back on 100% QA... hence less pay. ...

Is anyone else sick of reading the "football" updates?  How much time do you think they spend coming up with these motivational emails?  Seriously.  These things only motivate me to get my minimum lines in as quickly as possible so I can get off the system and away from these emails.  Reading their updates is like trying to listen to a football game on the radio.  I have to wonder what their ulterior motive is as to why they want the system emptied by 09/30.  Are w ...

Here's A New One (I Think) So Watch Out!

I just failed another audit.  No indications I was even being audited, no % showing up in my feedback like usual.  I thought it was so weird because I have been extra extra careful.  So I go to actually look at the work I typed instead of just the info that is sent to me.  My last audit was done on 5/24 all reports were typed that day and audited that day.  My audit this week was work from 5/23 and 5/24.  They didn't even audit my current work! ...

Acusis - Watch Out

Beware . . . Watch out for this company!!!  They do nothing but move employees around continously and train them on new accounts so there isn't any room for advancement or the ability to excel on a specific account.  Lastly, they have US MTs get all the 'bugs' out on an account and then move the account off shore and lay off their US MTs.  There is a lack of communication and lack of professional management throughout the entire company.  Just a heads up to any ...
