getting fingers warmed up - liz

Posted: Dec 17, 2009

When I start typing for the first time every day, it seems like my fingers are not as fast as my brain and want to get "tangled" because they cannot keep up.  This results in a lot of wasted time and lots of backspacing.  Do any of you experience this and if so how do you get your fingers "warmed up" before you start working?

so no one else has this problem?? - liz

I have the same problem that you do and I just have to very consciously slow myself down until my fingers limber up a bit.

Run hot water on them, or wash some dishes. - I also use fingerless knit gloves that - sm

I "prime" by putting them on the space heater for about a minute before wearing them. Hands stay nice 'n' toasty.

For me (and sounds like you) it is not an issue of literal (heat) warming of the fingers needed but brain-to-finger coordination/connection. I have never really figured out the cause, as some days when I feel pretty tired I still do not have the issue and vice versa; however, I have found it seems to help if I do finger exercises every day which I actually started because I have poor dexterity in my left pinky and ring fingers. I put a rubber band around the fingers I don't want to move, and then rotate (externally and then internally) each finger I want to exercise. I also lift each up and down (with dorsal side of hand up) and in and out. Also squeezing a tennis ball with the fingers helps to strengthen them. - This doesn't solve it completely, but it seems to help quite a bit if I do them regularly

I have been having the trouble the last few days again, and it sucks. Much harder work to get same amount of lines typed.

I have asked others who say they never have the problem. It must be a brain thing. I also have times where my speech is more fumbly which makes me think maybe my left brain is low on something sometimes. : ) I think the exercises help to stimulate certain connections and chemicals in the brain.

Try it and let me know if you think it helps.

I wear Wristies. You can find them with a Google search for wristies. I have no connection to the company - I'm just a satisfied customer and have used them for years.

ASR Fingers

Just typing along doing my thing.  At end of report no redundant skip marker for "end of report blah blah....type in corrected text, highlight, redundant marker not working..soo I do it again.  I figured it just was not working as sometimes highlighting and placing a skip marker does not work.  I finally realized I actually typed a report and was not editing.  That is why it was not working.. I don't mind ASR editing, except for that fact that it is slave labor, but doe ...

So Much For Keeping Fingers And Toes Crossed!
Nov 18, 2009

The only jobs that were actualy transcription for me today were the worst 4 doctors on the planet!  I am pulling my hair out today over the 10 reports that had to be sent to the MMEs with all of the holes! Also, to the MME who corrected 1 of my reports: I know that numbers are not spelled out, however, the doctor said "325 one or two a day"   He did not say milligram, therefore, you are not supposed to leave 2 numbers next to eachother, so I spelled it out.  If I knew we w ...

I am having a great deal of trouble with stiff and aching fingers and wrists - it is really slowing down my typing, which I can't afford. No insurance to go to doc. Do Your Fingers Reach In The Manner Described In The Latest Productivity Hint Email?
Oct 15, 2013

I must have much smaller hands, because I cannot reach the keys in the manner described for the right hand. Unfortunately, I already use the other tips and use the right + left hand for shortcuts, and only thing that makes any difference is the quality of the output. I don't use the DQS expander. Can you put heading formatting short cuts in it, i.e., heading + hightlight + Ctl H? I use the old program Short Cut instead. I could put the old style heading formatting codes (/>), but I ...

Fingers Crossed, Eyes Crossed, Knocked On Wood
Dec 02, 2011

Well, just as I landed my "dream" job with a very small MTSO and began making good money (albeit with no insurance benefits), lo and behold if I didn't get a call for a local "headhunter" today to open negotiations with a local group of specialty physicians who are apparently bringing their transcription back in house and want someone ready to hit the ground running.  Full-time, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., hourly pay, paid vacation, paid sick leave, a one-MT-show so priv ...
