Wondering if anyone can help me stay AWAKE! - SleepyMT

Posted: Jan 07, 2015

I love typing for a living . . . the problem is that I cannot seem to stay awake! Mornings are the worst! I get to the point where I literally can't hold my head up and have to take a little nap. It's killing my schedule and line count! I need/want to work more but I get too stinkin' tired. I'm afraid that if I keep coming up short with my line count, I'll lose my job. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? Coffee is not one that will work for me . . . can't stand the taste of it. I have always been on the tired side, so maybe I picked the wrong field; however, I'm in it now and working from home is the only option for us. I must find a way to wake my butt up!! Please help!!

Your up now, try 3rd shift or split shifts. - maybe you have narcolepsy.

You should probably talk to your doctor about it. Wish it was that easy for me to go to sleep, I've been suffering from insomnia for about 3 wks now; it comes and goes. I hate it.

Being up so late - SleepyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Is not the norm for me. Working third or split shifts is not an option. Thanks for your input, though.

can you consider a split shift or later - MTrauma

[ In Reply To ..]
I've had that happen to me and you're right, it's impossible to type when you can't hold your head up! Maybe you need to reschedule your shift for later in the morning, or even afternoon. Or work a split shift so you can nap in between. I'm not a morning person, so that's why I work afternoons. On rare occasion if I'm sick or haven't gotten enough sleep, I've emailed my supervisor to request a nap break. She's always been ok with it, as it's very rare that I ask. But I normally make sure and get enough sleep otherwise. I like coffee, but it doesn't keep me awake whatsoever. Nothing works when I'm tired except sleep!

Here's what I do..... - ....

[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, right or wrong, I take a One-A-Day multivitamin every morning - the one with caffeine in it (green box) - I could drink coffee - but the caffeine gets me going right away - I like coffee, but if I drink coffee, I want a cookie - which is not good - I drink a lot of water and when I feel tired, I chew a piece of peppermint gum - find one that has that real "bang" when you first start chewing it and then, just for kicks drink very cold water on top of the gum - almost hurts - but it does wake me up -

I also take a nap - I learned about 20 years ago in this business when I still had kids at home and worked late into the night sometimes and then had to get up early to get kids off to school - I used to fight and fight sleep until I realized that I can take a 10 minute nap at 9:00 in the morning - just set a timer somewhere where you have to get up to turn it off - put your feet up with a cozy blanket or two and sleep - I've actually done it twice in a day - but I do get my lines in.

I like some of those suggestions - SleepyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm just not sure 10 minutes would do it for me. When I nap it's usually for an hour and a half, which is why I'm constantly battling a line count problem. I guess I could give it a shot. You never know until you try!

Short nap.... - is the key

[ In Reply To ..]
I find that if I take a nap for more than 30 minutes, I wake up fuzzy-headed - I don't want to wake up at 10-15 minutes, but I can get back into work much more quickly.

When I was young, my mother used to take a 10 minute nap in the middle of the living room hardwood floor. I asked her why she didn't just take a nap in the chair or on her bed and she told me that she wanted to be uncomfortable so that it would be easier to get up - if she was tired enough, even the hardwood floor felt good....I prefer my recliner and the stove timer in the next room....

I had that problem - cindy

Have you been checked for diabetes type 2. I had that really bad in the past. Not anymore since on medication, but I would literally fall asleep while in a report, then wake up and not even know how long I was sleeping. It really sucked and it does make your line count go down.

I was tested for something - SleepyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
But I'm not sure what all I was tested for. Pretty sure I don't have diabetes; although, I am overweight and don't have particularly good eating habits.

Have you had a sleep study? Maybe you suffer from - Obstructive sleep apnea.

[ In Reply To ..]
That would explain excessive daytime sleepiness. Also try to turn your heat down, make it chilly where you work. Move often. if you start dosing off, stand up walk around, and that will help wake you for a bit.

One more thing..... - stay away from sugar...

[ In Reply To ..]
I have never gotten any benefit from a sugar "high" but rather about 15 minutes after I eat anything sweet - I get really, really tired....even fruit makes me tired - I have to save my apple and orange for later in the day.

Gluten-free also helps - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I looked like I had narcolepsy before I went gluten-free. It stopped within 2 weeks.

Comes right back if I eat something containing gluten. If I eat so much as a donut or a flour tortilla or some wheat pasta, I will be falling asleep standing up. It makes me feel drugged -- exactly as if I took a dose of a narcotic.

I had the same problem. Had a sleep study, was found to have sleep apnea and put on a CPAP machine--a thing with a small mask that you have to sleep in, but it's not too big a deal--and also put on Nuvigil, which is a medicine used for narcolepsy, sleep apnea and shift workers to help you be more awake.
I've never had a sleep study . . . - SleepyMT
[ In Reply To ..]
But maybe I should. My doctor was going to set me up with one and they were supposed to call me but never did and I just let it go because I figured I didn't snore, so I must not have sleep apnea. I suppose I should revisit the issue.

How To Stay Awake At The Computer
Nov 01, 2011

I just started a new MT job with our local university and am thrilled because it's full time, hourly, with fabulous benefits.  In my 30 years transcribing, this is the best deal yet.  However, it's difficult moving from a home office to a public office because I can't stop and take a nap when I get sleepy.    Today I found myself starting to nod off!  I tried making "deals" with myself, such as "Just stay awake and then you can take a nap as soon as y ...

Keep Me Awake Please!!!!
Apr 22, 2012

I am in hour number seven out of the thirteen that I must work today at the hospital. Only one person covers the weekend shift so I'm alone with nobody to talk to and I'm about DIE. I've taken a break after every third or fourth report, just trying to stretch and stay awake but the sleepies will not leave me alone. I seriously think I will die before 9 pm. Is anyone else just doing their best to survive this work day? Why can't these offices have windows??? It's gorgeous ...

Staying Awake On Third Shift
Aug 10, 2011

I was just wondering how many other people work third shift and have such trouble staying awake?  I have been doing third shift for a while and it's HARD!!! I have a new baby and my husband watches him in the day, but I cannot seem to get more than 4 hours of sleep during the day and then I try to take a nap in the evening before work, but I am STILL having problems staying awake and I know being tired sets one up for disaster for mistakes.  I am thinking of talking to my physicia ...

TTS - Stay Away
Feb 04, 2010

Stay away from this place.  They have no technical support and terrible communication. I tried to work with them for 3 weeks and was never able to work without problems.  The owner told unemployment that my issues were normal technical issues, resulting in my benefits being suspended.  I also spent money on software and upgraded my ISP and she's saying I didn't give enough effort! It's been my past experience that when I start with a new company platform that after a few days ...

Why I Stay
Aug 23, 2010

As much as I hate it here, I feel like I am trapped here. I am getting ready for major surgery and need the insurance. I can't afford to go to another co. and wait for insurance to kick in, plus "pre-existing condition" worries. I could just sit and cry when I start work. NJA and helper pools for hours, plus I don't feel well.  Flame me if you want (usually someone does), tell me how lucky I am to have a job with insurance. I really am beyond caring. Okay, just my private pity p ...

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

like many of you, Ive been with MQ for a while, pushing 10 yrs, and like most of you, have gotten spooked by the changes of late.  Mostly the NJA and now the all ME work, which I can finally see, can really be not too much of a big deal. have the chance to either change my status, adding hrs and gaining some PTO, or making a total change and going to another, much smaller company.  Similar MT rate, less for ASR there, no PTO for P/T. feel afraid to make a move either way...is MQ stil ...

Why Do You All Stay?
Dec 27, 2012

I understand all the difficulties involved in trying to get into another line of work but why do so many of you stay month after month when you have no work?  It's not going to get any better.  I have had work but the work is so terrible that I suspect they won't put a lot of MTs on it because they can't handle it.  I've been doing this over 40 years and the work makes me want to cry much of the time.  I'm only part-time and think if I had to do this full-time I woul ...

Should I Stay Or Should I Go ?
Feb 13, 2013

So, the long and short of it.  I have been an IC for the last 15 years.  I have typed for orthopods, general practioners, neurologists, dermatologists, and have done 2 years of acute care (both in-house and at home).  After transplanting to TX and losing my full-time job in MI, I've been searching for that "perfect" transcription job.  I love being an MT .... love the work, the flexibility, etc ... and have been told on many occasion that I am good at what I do ...

Stay Or Go?
Mar 23, 2014

Having a hard time deciding whether I should continue working for MM until they go under and have to lay off everyone and I could collect unemployment or if I should just leave, thereby leaving behind all the stress and frustration that I feel daily. I do not necessarily need the $, but it does help pay some bills. If I stay, I would have to do some training for Fluency and switch to VR from straight transcription. I know my pay will be cut drastically with this change. I'm not sure I ...

Please Tell Me How To Stay Focused!!! Sm
Dec 04, 2009

I have done this type of work for a long time.  The last couple of years I have a terrible time staying focused on my work and not emailing, texting, surfing the web, etc.  I need the money really badly!  What is wrong with me?  I am not destitute yet - I keep asking myself if that is what has to happen before I can get serious and do my job.  I should be able to do 2000 lines a day but instead I am doing 950 to 1000. Stay Employed At TTS
Jun 15, 2011

So, from what I understand, to stay employed at TTS, you basically have to just work and agree with mgmt at all times?  Never question them on anything?  Is that the only thing they are concerned about??!!  No one has ever mentioned how they feel about production met or not, etc.  Not that meeting production would be a problem for me, but if they don't care about that, it makes me wonder what kind of company they are running if all they care about is being right and not being questioned ...

Stay Away From Advantec
Oct 03, 2011

I was just fired from Advantec, working on an oncology account because they told me that they did not have time to train me on account specifics for the 25 doctors, each with a different template, and because I got 2 experimental drug names incorrect. I was on 100% review and if I did not understand a word I left a blank and went from there.  I am very upset about this.  I have been a transcriptionist for 10 years and I am very upset about this.  ...

If You Stay In MT Long Enough, You
Jan 07, 2012

I was just reading the BOS3, which (unfortunately, as it DECIMATES the rules of proper English) more and more employers are adhering to these days.  VERY disturbing.  They want only ONE (oh, excuse me -- 1) space after periods and other punctuation marks (colon, etc.)  This will, of course, CUT YOUR LINE COUNT. They claim that this is necessary for proper uploading to the EHR, but we placed TWO spaces after a colon at the hospital where I used to work without any problem.  ...

Stay away from Diskriter who has an ad on the Job Seeker's Board. I worked for them and it was THE worst experience of my life. How Do They Stay In Business?
May 18, 2013

I've read post after post after post, in addition to having my own experience with Nuance and I really wonder how this company as well as M*Modal stay in business.  I guess even though people are quitting left and right or being fired for not having 99% accuracy, there must be more people waiting in the wings to take their places. I originally came from Transcend prior to the acquisition by Nuance and although I can't say that company was the best either, IMO, it was better than ...

Trying To Stay Positive Looking For Job

I read the posts on these boards now and again, but never ever post here.  I feel like I have to post something at this point.  I came to the boards seeking current information on TTS and like a complete fool, I didn't listen.  I was snowballed by the recruiter into believing the boards are a farse and it's a great and wonderful place filled with unicorns who fart rainbows  (obviously I didn't really buy all of that mess, but I was falling for a good bit of it) ...
