UPDATE on HIPAA class - Backpedal much?

Posted: Jun 04, 2010

Here's the latest in my inbox:

"These classes will vary in topic and although we will strongly suggest you take some or all of the classes in the end that decision will be up to you. They will not be mandatory as previously communicated but strongly encouraged for any MLS who wants to continue their education and professional training.

HIPAA is the first class we loaded into the system because of the new regulations which became effective in February.  Some of these regulations affect you personally so we felt an obligation to provide you with a comprehensive, timely training program that you could take at your leisure instead of paying for the class on your own.  We sincerely hope you take advantage of this and other professional development classes that we offer in the future."

Hmmmm....methinks someone got "schooled" here (pardon the pun).

I ended up getting three of these in my inbox. Funny how apparently most of us had a problem with this. I'll probably still go ahead and take the course, but now it will definitely be on my time and not by their date. lol

Never got this update. Oh really, now it's not mandatory? If you believe that I've got some swampland in Alaska for sale!

Yes, but... - mtmom

I keep all my email, and please believe if I have any adverse action against me for either not taking it or not taking it on time, I will not hesitate to sue. I'm not playing games with these people. My time is valuable and if they want to take it up, they will pay me for it or they will leave me alone and let me do it on my own.

If it is a legal requirement, why now Not Mandatory? - mtmom

If this isn't mandatory now, but required by law, how do they plan to make sure everyone does it? I'm a little confused here. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Maybe I should email that Donna DeFancesca person (or however she spells her name)

Can't say it's mandatory and not pay. - LK

Sounds like they were trying to have their cake and eat it too, and then realized they needed to back off. It is not legal under labor laws to REQUIRE an employee to take training and not pay the employee for that time. You can make it optional and not pay, but you may not require it unless you pay the employee. Don't let them get away with crap like that!

HIPAA - schooled

TTS did this - it took 4 hours and we were paid 50 dollars.

labor law - mtmom

my atty is researching now whether the HIPAA training is REQUIRED by law. he is going to get back to me on this. He said it was "interesting they are already backtracking from claiming the training is mandatory." Will keep everyone updated. If it is required by law, not sure how it can't be mandatory. WE'll just wait and see.

Thanks for checking on this...nm - Inquiring minds, etc. etc.

HIPAA - Need A Quick Check On HIPAA Rules
Oct 29, 2009

Hi, I need a quick check on HIPAA rules.  With respect to the health care debate, I want to write to my senator, etc., about a situation with a patient I transcribed on.  The only info. I intend to give is that the patient was a:  Russian immigrant, on welfare and receiving Medicaid benefits--when he should not have.  He and his "sponsor(s)" was responsible for his care and living expenses.  Further, I transcribed a note in which the doctor said that this patient wanted to re-sched ...

Update On Update Three Reports A Day
Aug 10, 2012

Hi everyone I just wanted to stop by really quick and let you all know that finally, FINALLY I am off QA. I was given two accounts today in addition to the one they had initially given me. I can now type w/o counting my reports and waiting for feedback first. It remains to be seen of course, whether or not there will be as much work as I was told but so far, this company has been true to their word. Still, four days on a very restrictive QA protocol was quite scary. I am a LOT grayer now ...

Anyone Who Took CareerStep Class
Nov 09, 2009

A friend of mine is taking the CareerStep class for MT (although I tried to talk her out of it).  Anyway she is in the transcription part, and using the disks that were supplied with the course.  How did you listen to and transcribe from this.  She put the disk in the disk drive of her computer, but there is no way to start/stop the dictation, etc. and I believe it would be very frustrating.  Or are we both missing something?  Did you use expresscribe or something and do ...

Teacher: Class, How Can We Be More Creative With MT Pay Gouging?
Oct 02, 2013

If a person types 60 words a minute (roughly six lines with 10 words per line), and it takes two minutes to type those six lines (roughly twice the amount of time as dictated), that equates to this: 30 minutes divided by 6 lines equals 5 cents, divided by 2 for the time factor of typing = 2.5 cents a line. I guess we are seeing the new low in the MT limbo dance. ...
