coding class - newbie

Posted: Jun 19, 2010

I am taking a coding and billing course on-line and I am almost finished, but I am having trouble.  I just do not get it. I code and then find out it should have been a different code. I start in the alphabetical index and then check the tabular index, but there is also the E and V and everything. I have a hard time with the order of things.

If anyone can help this poor soul it would be great. :-)

Do they have an instructor you can e-mail for specific questions? - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
Is the course mostly coding or mostly billing? I am asking that because maybe the instructor is more of a biller than a coder. That would mean that it might be hard to get the help you need from the instructor. Have you asked for help?

When you get your work back and it's wrong, does it come with an explanation of what it was wrong?

what class are you taking? through whom? - maybe we can help

Unfortunately, my class is on-line and whenever I e-mail her a question she usually does not answer for about 3 days. This is very frustrating when you want to know something right away. The course seems to have concentration more on coding than anything. I am at the end of CPT and next is procedural coding.

If they are not answering your e-mail, call the school and ask to speak to an instructor. I don't know what program you are referring to, but some of them have student message boards and chat rooms, maybe you could get help that way.

Remember to always check your guidelines before you code anything to help you out too. I'm sorry that your instructors are not around for you. Good luck!

Are you still going to be able to graduate? More questions inside - See inside

I was wondering if you are still going to be able to graduate. You said that you're almost finished. Are your grades high enough to graduate?

Also, you've been in the course for some time evidently. Have you asked questions? When you did, were you able to get answers from the instructor? Were you able to understand the answers?

My advice is to try again to get help from the instructor. Then I would go back to the instructions you were given and read them again. You may have missed something simple. Coding does require carefully reading. Let us know how you do.

My grades are really good so far. I have an A going, but I feel like I am at a standstill.

If you have an A so far, then you didn’t have any other times when you felt like you didn’t get it? If you did have other times, what did you do then? Everyone has moments in learning coding when they don’t get it. You should stop and work it through until you get it before you move on. Your instructor should guide you even if you have to wait. It takes time to get some things and time to work it out and through. Go back and re-read the instructions you got on this particular part, see if you missed anything.

Thanks. I did feel stuck before and worked through it. I dont know what it is. Fear of failure? I dont know, but I will try.

I emailed - but

I don't think it went through.
Well, ok, but . . . - Redpen

OK, so you don't think your email went through. Let's try something that only requires reliance on your best resources . . . yourself and reputable references.

Coding requires a lot of self-generated action, seeking out of information, and self-teaching. You have to be able to decide what you need to know and get out there in a book or online or somewhere, find that information, and figure out what it says.

For the problems you are having now, your textbook and the Official ICD-9-CM Coding Guidelines are the resources of choice. The Coding Guidelines are in most ICD-9-CM code books, and they're also online at the CDC. There are also "coding conventions" in your code book which will help you understand the exact way the code book is written, so you'll want to use those, too.

This is fundamental information and it's going to be easy to find. You won't need to look up anything online, because it's all right there in your code book. It's stated clearly, but at first it might look confusing. You'll just have to work with it a bit.

From your email I see some implied questions. Find the answers in your textbook and the Coding Guidelines. You can come back here and share what you find with us. I think you might get very close to the answers you need.

1. Finding the main code. Is this inpatient or outpatient? What does your textbook say? What do the Coding Guidelines say? (Be sure to look for both inpatient and outpatient rules, unless your course covers only outpatient. And, if your course covers outpatient, does your textbook only discuss outpatient, or have they confused you by throwing in some inpatient?)

2. Sequencing. What does your textbook say? What do the Coding Guidelines say?

3. Did the information in #1 and #2 help you understand the sequencing in the questions that confused you? If not, look up those codes and see if there are any specific sequencing instructions like "code first." Did that explain it?

4. Did what you look up conflict with your expectations about sequencing? What information created your expectations about sequencing? Was it written somewhere or did you try to figure it out from looking at the way the course answers were written? Are you sure that your sequencing was actually wrong? Why? What exactly led you to believe that it was wrong?

5. V codes. What are those for? When should you use them? What does your textbook tell you? What do the Coding Guidelines tell you?

6. E codes. What are those for? When should you use them? What does your textbook tell you? What do the Coding Guidelines tell you? When are E codes *required* and when are they not required. What has led you to believe that you are wrong when you don't include them or that you're wrong when you do include them?

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Teacher: Class, How Can We Be More Creative With MT Pay Gouging?
Oct 02, 2013

If a person types 60 words a minute (roughly six lines with 10 words per line), and it takes two minutes to type those six lines (roughly twice the amount of time as dictated), that equates to this: 30 minutes divided by 6 lines equals 5 cents, divided by 2 for the time factor of typing = 2.5 cents a line. I guess we are seeing the new low in the MT limbo dance. ...
