The Future of Medical Transcription - MTathome

Posted: Sep 05, 2012

What do you feel is the future of the medical transcription profession?  In my area, the hospitals and their doctors' groups are switching over to voice recognition systems and not using traditional medical transcription.  Will I be out of a job soon?

Speech Rec is a nightmare. You will be out of a job when it moves to Epic - seeya

They will still need people to edit the speech rec becuase it is SO BAD, however, at a GREATLY reduced rate. Usually 4 cpl.

I use VR to echo dictate reports and have done so for over 2 years now. - Here is what they will soon find out

The technology is not where it is represented to be by those who market it. There are no doctors or other authors of reports that speak clearer than I do. I enunciate clearly every word I say, and Dragon still makes mistakes. The novelty of the idea will wear off quickly for those doctors, and then the reality of the time consumption required for accurate proof reading of what they were anticipating would be accurate renderings of their dictation will set in. If they thought dictation was too time consuming, wait 'till they get a load of the time the failing of VR will require to re-read everything they just said in order to catch that occasional word rendered in place of what they actually said that is utterly laughable (even potentially harmful and therefore litigious) and fix it. VR will be way more frustrating than they ever imagined. It is not what it is being represented to them to be. Whether they will be willing to abandon their investment and hopeful imaginings in the light of their new-found frustrations will be another story. However, if we are waiting in the wings to offer a viable alternative to relieving that frustration, they may just come back around. Again, the technology is not what it has been represented to them to be, they just don't know it yet. It will be interesting to see what happens when they find out.

There is absolutely no way any VR can be sent through without editing it and also there will - PAMT

always be mistakes especially when doctors dictate a mile a minute or whatever or constantly change their minds because it puts that down in the dictation. Never happen at least in my lifetime that they can do VR without editing but then there is India which is a far worse problem for us than VR will ever be.

Healthcare is a growing industry and is creating lot of job opportunities in respective fields of healthcare and medical transcription is one amongst them. The medical transcription job requires accuracy, thats why employer always hire skilled professionals. If you feel you don't have the right skills, get trained yourself from medical transcription online school. Though many hospitals are swithcing to voice recognition systems medical transcriptionists correct and edit written reports created by these systems. No need to worry about your job.

Future Of No More Medical Transcription
Mar 22, 2011

Are you thinking of going into medical transcription for a career? Don't do it! The field is growing smaller every day, and soon will be gone completely. In Alaska, all the major hospitals have gone to voice recognition, and work is scarcer all the time. Look into medical coding maybe, or working in a doctor's office as an assistant or receptionist. DON'T GO INTO MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION! Liza ...

Newbie-Future Of Medical Transcriptionists?
Apr 28, 2011

I have gone through and read some of your posts.  I see that Andrews School, MTec, and possibly CareerStep are your top notch schools.  Is there still a need for transcriptionists?  I don't want to go out and spend all this money and not be able to find a job. I would like to be able to work from home as well. What are other's thoughts on this subject?  I have seen several that haven't been able to find a job.  I figured it would take me about 8-12 month ...

RHIT And Medical Coding Future
Oct 09, 2011

Does anyone have good input on whether medical scribes are the new medical transcriptionists only being filled my medical students, medical assistants or a part-time or piecemeal clerk at a lower rate (hourly or by piece) than medical transcriptionists -- if lower pay is even possible? Also, what are any inputs on RHIT and the medical coding future? I already have a bachelor's degree but thought about another associate degree in RHIT in a CAHIIM accredited program. Future In Medical Coding / Billing
Feb 08, 2012

I have a question about coding and billing.  For three years in the '90s, I coded and transcribed for a small, rural, hospital.  I was responsible for outpatient, ER, inpatient, surgical etc. coding and transcription.  It was mostly ICD-9, and HCPC coding.  If I want to code from home in the future, what would you suggest I do, an online program?  Do you think coding from home would be an opportunity or do most hospitals/clinics/physicians require experience at a facility first, and wo ...

EMR And The Future Of Transcription

The Future Of Transcription
May 07, 2013

I had to take my two kids to the doctor the other day.  Thought I was lucky, because there were only 2 people in front of us, but it was TWO HOURS before we were called back.  Once I got back there, I saw why.  When the nurse came in to ask the pre-visit questions, she asked a MILLION questions and entered them all into her laptop, typing out what we said (typed VERY slow, by the way) and we were just on HER portion for over 45 minutes.  Then, the doctor came in and saw the kids and she spen ...

Radiology Transcription Future
Sep 22, 2011

There has been an obvious decrease in medical transcriptionist positions being advertised where I live.  However, I tend to see openings for radiology transcriptionists at the local hospitals.  Due to the nature of this work and the quick TAT needed, I wonder if radiology transcriptionists will always be in need or if it too will die off.  ...

Future Of Transcription - An Observation
Jan 29, 2012

It is my opinion that transcription, whether it be standard or voice, will be replaced altogether in the very near future.  There may be some little independent offices or hospitals that continue, but not for long.  I say this for 2 reasons.  One is that the hospital I worked for locally started withe EHR about 5 years ago and the introduction of VR about 3 years ago with the push for the doctors to do their own "point & click" type of transcription.  The software made a ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

Anyone ever do non-medical transcription? I'm interested to know if you liked it. I tried it for a few days and just decided it wasn't for me.
