Question regarding a possible Scribe Position - MT to Scribe?

Posted: Apr 28, 2010

Okay...I have been researching different career paths, as we all know this industry is going down the tubes!  I have gone to different schools to ask questions and I have applied to different jobs that I thought I might be interested in.

Well, my resume must be out there or something because yesterday out of the blue a placement company called me regarding a temp transcription position which I turned down.  Well, again today I got a call from a recruiting agency (they left a message, as I did not answer the call).  They are looking for someone to plan and implement a scribe department in one of the local healthcare facilities.  I admit, I saw this job posted and thought it would be awesome...but thought I was way underqualified.

The guy wanted to know if this was something I would be interested in and whether MT and scribe were similar.  My question is, do I want to try and sell my skill set to him that I can do this job?

Curious - pghpa

I would try to sell him on your skill set, but only if the pay was good. What is the going rate that you were quoted?

jobs like this scare me - because once you

get it up and going, then what? They might not need you any longer. This happened to me in another industry. Three long hard months of planning and implementing and them BAM, it was over in an instant.

You can definitely do the job (scribe) if you have been a successful and accurate MT for at least a few years. You basially follow the doctor around and input the data into EMR on a laptop during the patient's visit. The only thing I think would be more difficult than what we do as home MTs, is that you can't rewind the doc:) I would think, though, that you would learn the doc's style and voice very quickly after following them around for a few hours.

I have read, however, that many scribe positions are often filled by medical students who are paid low to minimum wage (part-time job while they are in school which is great experience for them).

I would ask for more information and definitely go on the interview. Ask a lot of questions. Use your MT expertise to find out EXACTLY what they are looking for. Sometimes the job description given to the recruiter is not exactly what the job really entails. Know what I mean?

Good luck with it!

To Those Doing The MT/MME Position

I know from previous posts on here that that job isn't the big thing MQ was making it out to be (horrible editing pay, etc).  BUT...do you guys at least have work to do, whether it is typing or editing?  I am just an MT and I run out of work daily.  If I had become an MME as well, would I have at least been making a little money, or are you guys running out of work too, no matter what? Does This Put Me In A Bad Position?
Jan 06, 2011

I just wrote a very long post, but decided to minimalize it because I feel very on edge with my company and I'm doing the absolute best I can. If you know the hospital that hired your company is not happy with the work that is being produced, and you are able to see glaring errors in other people's work, would you say something to management or keep it to yourself? This is MY job too, and if the errors continue I am afraid the hospital will go elsewhere, meaning my job is gone as wel ...

MME Position

Are there any MMEs out there who regret having become an MME? And if you become an MME, are you able to go back to just MT status if you decide you do not like it? Need Some Advice About A Position
Jun 08, 2010

I need some advice about a position that I am being offered.  It is an IC position.  They want Tu-Sat or Sun-Thurs and 1500 lines per day.  This is supposedly 70% VR and the rest is straight typing.  I know that techniqually they aren't supposed to require weekend work and line requirements for IC, but how is the best way to negotiate this and still get the job?  I hate the job that I am currently doing and don't make enough money at it.  I usually do work ...
