Perfect MT - JW

Posted: Aug 03, 2012

I need help in being a perfect MT. It seems I proofread my work and later find out that I left a word out or did not finish a word. I am not perfect and will never be so why do I beat myself up when I do this? I know all the rest of you must be perfect because I am told I am not and have to be to keep this job.

The "perfect MT" is a myth, made up by MTSO - supervisors to keep us scared 4 our jobs. (sm)

If you are turning out beautiful, correct medical reports that any MT or doctor would be proud of, QA will either change the punctuation/spelling rules, or make up new ones, in order to claim you made a mistake. That way they make their jobs more secure, at your/our expense.

The MTSO supervisor will send you written "warnings", to keep you worried enough to continue to try to improve what is alreay likely better than most of the work they receive from other MTs. They seem to believe it will increase their QA, thus keeping the clients' business, and likely gaining themselves a chance at a raise.

They will do the same thing to you when they feel they need to boost production. They'll raise your daily line quota to the ridiculous, all the while telling you that all the other MTs in the company are doing far more than the new minimum. Even if you know that's B.S., proving it is virtually impossible. They could just as easily tell you the other MTs are really pink unicorns that poop $100 dollar bills, and there would be no way for you to disprove it.

All this cr*p the MTSOs feed us is for one purpose only: To justify lowering our wages, and ultimately, our self-esteem, even further.

Don't believe them. Do work that YOU know is good, remembering that not even the best MT in the world is mistake-free.

Protect yourself as best you can by documenting EVERYTHING. Your start/finish times, lines produced, breaks, etc. Occasionally crunch the numbers against what they *claim* you did on your pay stubs. Chances are, you're going to discover that you're being shafted, just like the rest of us.

But don't ever take what they tell you personally. Not a one of these companies is honest. They would sell their own mothers into slavery if it would net them another dollar to line their pockets with. MTs are not truly *employed*, in the true sense of the word. Instead, they are USED. Used to train VR, used to edit Indian cr*p-work, used to make a couple people at the top of this scam profession rich. What happens to us along the way is irrelevant to them, as we are nothing but numbers on their payroll, or blinking lights on some computer monitor in India.

Take care of yourself, be proud of your work, and know that no matter what happens in the future, as this profession circles the drain, it wasn't you, because you did your best.

SM I wish I could give you a big hug ((((SM)))). I really needed to read your post. It has asolutely made my day. QA does exactly what you describe. They change what the doctor said which sounded fine to me just to put green stuff in my feedback. I feel like I am being bullied. I have to save this post and refer back to it to feel better. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Believe it or not, my company recently asked us to - "dumb down" our work - sm

(i.e., not worry about punctuation and grammar so much) on our VR editing work, so that we can raise our production. That goes completely against what they do the rest of the time, which is to practice total anal-retentiveness when it comes to even the slightest deviation from the latest proclamation of "style" to be handed down by AHDI.

Now just watch: as soon as we do what they tell us, and get a little lax on the editing in order to raise production (and further line the pockets of the fat cats at the top), we'll get slapped with more warnings about "mistakes".

MT has gotten to be like those bad dreams we all sometimes have, where you're trying to run, but your feet keep sinking in mud or quicksand.

Interesting...that is what Webmedx told us to do prior to selling business to Nuance. You can read the QA nightmare some Nuance MTs are having on the Nuance forum. Our Webmedx QA people have always been very fair and helpful.

Is your company ripe for a buyout?
I don't know if they're looking to be bought out, but - certainly within the realm of possibilities. sm

They seem to pattern themselves after M*Modal as much as possible. Also they started out with all these big plans to rule the MT industry, and it hasn't worked out that way. They seem to have a hard time keeping clients. I suppose someday all MTSOs will get bought out by M*Modal, and that'll be the only one left. Whatever. I'm looking to get out ASAP.

Yessirree! 4 cpl is, as 4 cpl does! We should say, - "So, how bad do you want it?"

[ In Reply To ..]
For 12 cpl, it'll be great.
For 11 cpl, it'll be good.
For 10 cpl, it'll be average.
For 9 cpl, it'll be fair to middlin'.
For 8 cpl, it'll be slightly poor.
For 7 cpl, it'll be somewhat flawed.
For 6 cpl, it'll be poor.
For 5 cpl, it'll be worse.
For 4 cpl, it'll be bad.
For 3 cpl, it'll be a joke.
For 2 cpl and less, it'll be India.

This is VERY funny... - (see message)

JW, don't beat yourself. You probably are an EXCELLENT MT. I wish you all could have experienced what it was like in the days of the "Mom and Pop" GREAT MT services back in the 1980s and 1990s. The services were incredible. The docs who dictated were incredible, whether they dictated office work or at a hospital. We worked for our "Mom and Pop" MT services and the docs would THANK US for the wonderful work we did for them. They would thank us for "fixing them up to sound good." The "Mom and Pop" services appreciated us and thanked us for the GREAT work we turned out for them. Our profession was something to be proud of. We loved it, we loved the services we worked for, we loved the docs and hospitals we transribed for, and we turned out great work (without punitive QA breathing down our necks) and we made FABULOUS MONEY for the hard work we did (for example, from the 1980s to approximately 2000, a good transcriptionist could easily make $60,000 to $70,000). What has gone wrong with our profession? The MEGALITH MONSTER COMPANIES that have swallowed up all of our "Mom and Pop" fabulous transcription services that appreciated us, treated us like the professionals we are, and paid us accordingly, and yes, of course, send our work to India et al, where of course, BETTER QA PERSONNEL CAN BE FOUND THAN IN THE U.S. Those were the GOOD DAYS and my heart goes out to all of you hardworking wonderful MTs who never had the great experience that I and many others have had with TEANSCRIPTION AS IT USED TO BE! God bless you all.

Old MT Right On - JW

I worked in an orthopedic office for 24 years and most of the time I was allowed to work at home and paid well. I was able to buy two homes, both new. I had a good life. There was the usual office politics going on in the office but I didn't have to deal with most of it. In the end, one of the docs left the practice due to the office politics and that's when it started to fall apart. The MTSOs took all our work and turned it into a nightmare. I had no choice but to work for one and was totally miserable for three years until I finally quit and thought I had a local job for an ortho group in this small city I live in. I worked with three other MTs for a few months then the work dried up and was unemployed for 7 months and now I work for another MTSO which pays by the hour and not line but they still bug you to do more and and demand the accuracy of course. I am one that believes accuracy comes first and with the practice I have the speed is kind of ridculous because some of the dictators demand more time. That's just the way it is. It's not cut and dry the way they want it to be. As for their QA, they have to put something on the feedback even if they just change a few words that does not make a bit of difference. The stress of this work is so heavy duty and I find myself crying to relieve it when I am working. All these issues that are brought up here are those that I have experienced. I am with you all. God Bless you all. We are in this together.

I have over 15 years as an MT. I think I'm pretty darn good after all these years. Perfect? No. But darn good. Anyway, my thorn in the side is whenever I test for a new MTSO lately my test score comes back at 86%. WTH? I am meticulous when it comes to testing and have all my books, etc. handy when taking the test. I take my time and know that I pretty much did 100%. Then I get the little email. "We're sorry but your score was 86% on the test. Sorry but we can't go into detail abou ...

Nobody's Perfect
Feb 13, 2015

I keep seeing this commercial on TV for insurance where the girl says "insurance companies - news flash. Nobody's perfect." I can't help but think I hope someone from Nuance is watching, preferably those idiots who mark off for dumb picky BS when doing QA. One dumb error in a report that has absolutley no impact on the intent or on patient care but I am below 99% for it. I used to tell my kids all the time "what goes around comes around." I would love to be around when it "comes a ...

MT Venting -- I Know I Am Not Perfect But...
Jul 27, 2011

I have been observing a lot of comments made on this board and have heard many comments from others about the MT profession across the Internet.  Sadly, most comments ring loud and clear with the all too familiar vibe, such as:  “Times are tough” and “You have to make adjustments” during these tough economic times.  Yes I get that part of it.  I also work at a MTSO and I know from firsthand experience that it can be tough -- especially when our pa ...

Anyone Out There Still Using Word Perfect?
Jan 05, 2012

I'm an IC, at present have two accounts, and have used WP for 24 years (WP X3 in the last five).  However, because of changes coming down the pike, I think I should probably finally sit down and really learn Word (I have Word 2007). I just thought I'd ask here before I take a class on Word:  Are there any medical transcription shortcuts/secrets I should know about that I wouldn't learn in a class?  For instance, is it possible not to use the mouse?  Are there ...

Lee Perfect Transcription
Apr 22, 2013

Hello all! I just received an IC offer from Lee Perfect. I have checked the archives and cannot find any postings more recent than 2010. Anyone currently work for or recently worked for them in the past? Pros, cons? I just recently lost a great cardiology account with another company thanks to EMR, and I am hopeful to find a company that makes me as happy as that one did. I used to work for Transcend, so I'm leery of big MTSOs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :) ...
