A perfect stranger - SM

Posted: Jul 30, 2010

Yesterday I had my appointment for a a haircut and color.  I was sitting in the chair, and a woman two chairs down asked where I worked.   She said I looked familiar.  That, of course, was not the case.  We got to talking, and she said she was a transcriptionist 20 years ago, and she was trying to break into this field again, but no company would hire her because she had not done this work for so long.   She asked what company I worked for.  I told her I quit, but said I had worked for MQ for a long time.  I cautioned her strongly about even contacting them.  She said she had been warned by many people to stay clear.  She asked for specifics, and I told her.  The word is out MQ.  Your time at the top may be limited.

MT Field - MT

I don't recommend this field to anyone at all, period, no matter who you work for. But your specific advice about who NOT to work for was right on. I quit about a year ago and am much happier. Well, miserable because of the way things are going with ASR, etc., but nonetheless, I am happier.

MT Field - Quit MQ

[ In Reply To ..]
I too quit MQ at the beginning of the year and it has been an absolute roller coaster ride trying to pin down a decent job. I just want something part time and steady and that seems next to impossible to fine. BUT, I have never, ever, been sorry I left that company and have never looked back. No matter what, even if you are having a hard time,it is better than working for MQ.

I agree. The first thing we talked about was the field in general. She said she knows it's bad. I always feel bad about bursting the balloon, but I am not going to mislead anyone. This is not something someone should pursue at this point, at least if they are self supporting.

What I also find very sad about our profession's decline - anon

not just at MQ but overall, is that there are still some commercial MT training schools out there luring prospective students with fairy tales about high demand, job security, unlimited earning potential, and (I love this part) flexible schedules. They charge exorbitant tuition, require costly training materials, and then provide little or no placement assistance. Their graduates who come up dry are made to feel they are not marketing themselves properly, when in reality they are just coming way too late to the MT party. Between that and the MTSOs spinning their low-cost offshoring with the fable that there's a desperate shortage of domestic MTs, it's no wonder prospective MTs are so astounded when they hear such a different story from someone who actually works in the field.

I, too, hate to burst the bubble of an MT hopeful, especially one who might be unemployed and frustrated, but nowadays when anyone asks me I am emphatic that any effort or $$ expended to enter this field would be wasted. So very sad, because about 10-15 years ago my advice would have been completely the opposite.

fully agree- no need to spend $$ to make minimum wage - no MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would I encourage someone to spend $5000+ for MT school only to make just as much as working at McDonald's or Walmart? For a new MT making 5 cpl it will take years to pay off schooling.

You have said it so well - they're coming too late to the party. - ncmt

However, when we point that out, we're "bitter old MTs" who are "being negative." Hate to say I told you so, but......
"bitter old MTs" - Linda

I don't think you are "bitter old MTs." I am retired, but wanted something that I could do at home to supplement my income and so I could feel useful again. So, last August I started MT school (as that was the only thing I saw that sounded like you could do any good working at home) (Kaplan University online) and finished February this year. This past week is the first job I have gotten and have worked really, really hard and made maybe $1.50-$2.00/hour. I love doing it, but certainly am not prepared to do the actual work. This girl has been very kind to let me work. I do so bad, every night I don't think I will get to work the next day. Anyway, I am retired and have a retirement income. I really feel bad for the younger people who are being sucked into this field and then not being able to find a job. Something should be done about it, but what do you do?
Bitter old MTs - Working MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Everyone is having trouble finding a job these days, not just MTs. I started out working for peanuts when I started as a newbie and I'm sure others did too. No one enters any occupation making top dollar, it is necessary to work your way up the ladder. Wages have declined in nearly every occupation. Hopefully your income will improve when your skills improve.
I would qualify as a "bitter old MT". Any newbie who - cant figure out how I got this way, deserves the s

I think it is that way for everyone the first days, weeks, etc. - cc

I think once your mind settles down and you get more familiar and comfortable with the platform and the dictators, you can then get the expander doing as much work for you as possible and your speed, accuracy and income will pick up. Best of luck to you :) It is more difficult at this point in time to be new in this industry. I am glad it is a supplement for you and you're not trying to make it your main source of income since most of us need a second job to supplement this one nowdays:)
Just being real - SM

Some people, unfortunately don't see the truth or won't hear it until they face it themselves. I have a family member who does the same thing. Now that she's in a more difficult situation I listen for hours to her and try to help her. When things were better for her she had no time to listen to me and never took what I said seriously. I would try to vent to her, and the minute I tried I would hear dishes banging over the phone, water running, etc. In other words. . "I'm finished with MY story,no time for yours." How aad. Nothing bitter with the MTs. We are living with a huge dose of reality.

Perfect MT
Aug 03, 2012

I need help in being a perfect MT. It seems I proofread my work and later find out that I left a word out or did not finish a word. I am not perfect and will never be so why do I beat myself up when I do this? I know all the rest of you must be perfect because I am told I am not and have to be to keep this job. ...

I Know I'm Not Perfect But....
Feb 28, 2014

I have over 15 years as an MT. I think I'm pretty darn good after all these years. Perfect? No. But darn good. Anyway, my thorn in the side is whenever I test for a new MTSO lately my test score comes back at 86%. WTH? I am meticulous when it comes to testing and have all my books, etc. handy when taking the test. I take my time and know that I pretty much did 100%. Then I get the little email. "We're sorry but your score was 86% on the test. Sorry but we can't go into detail abou ...

Nobody's Perfect
Feb 13, 2015

I keep seeing this commercial on TV for insurance where the girl says "insurance companies - news flash. Nobody's perfect." I can't help but think I hope someone from Nuance is watching, preferably those idiots who mark off for dumb picky BS when doing QA. One dumb error in a report that has absolutley no impact on the intent or on patient care but I am below 99% for it. I used to tell my kids all the time "what goes around comes around." I would love to be around when it "comes a ...

MT Venting -- I Know I Am Not Perfect But...
Jul 27, 2011

I have been observing a lot of comments made on this board and have heard many comments from others about the MT profession across the Internet.  Sadly, most comments ring loud and clear with the all too familiar vibe, such as:  “Times are tough” and “You have to make adjustments” during these tough economic times.  Yes I get that part of it.  I also work at a MTSO and I know from firsthand experience that it can be tough -- especially when our pa ...

Anyone Out There Still Using Word Perfect?
Jan 05, 2012

I'm an IC, at present have two accounts, and have used WP for 24 years (WP X3 in the last five).  However, because of changes coming down the pike, I think I should probably finally sit down and really learn Word (I have Word 2007). I just thought I'd ask here before I take a class on Word:  Are there any medical transcription shortcuts/secrets I should know about that I wouldn't learn in a class?  For instance, is it possible not to use the mouse?  Are there ...

Lee Perfect Transcription
Apr 22, 2013

Hello all! I just received an IC offer from Lee Perfect. I have checked the archives and cannot find any postings more recent than 2010. Anyone currently work for or recently worked for them in the past? Pros, cons? I just recently lost a great cardiology account with another company thanks to EMR, and I am hopeful to find a company that makes me as happy as that one did. I used to work for Transcend, so I'm leery of big MTSOs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :) ...

Failed by 0.15. Got an error for "not following CP" Excuse me! I could not find this tiny exception in the jumble they call the CP. Oops, like, sorry I missed that, but I did hunt for it! I know there is one account in the many I encounter every day that I has this little tidbit waiting to bite you in the rear end. Looking forward to 2 more fails - even though I am in the 99% range. I do not know how I am going to do any better with the sound quality and the horrid ASR I am given. I al ...
